Alois Kracher Jr. died this past Tuesday at his home in Austria from pancreatic cancer. He was a major force in bringing back the Austrian wine industry from major scandal in 1985. His Austrian dessert wines are considered amongst the finest in the world and are some of the finest I have tasted. He had in recent years ventured into other projects including making a fine Spanish dessert wine with Jorge Ordoñez and crafting his own sweet wine soaked bleu cheese. The wine making will be taken over by his 26 year old son, Gerhard.
