  1. I ended up on this thread after reading Chufi’s Tallinn report which was great.

My wife and I will be going on a tour in May of Tallinn, Helsinki, and St. Petersburg and will be passing through Amsterdam both before and after.

We have been to Amsterdam one other time in 2004. We sampled a lot of food and it was great.

    We went to:

    de Lewte

    Blauw aan de Wal

    Bordewijk

    Blue Pepper

    Chez Georges

    De Kas

    Tranquilo, Tapasbar Bistro

    Vermeer

We want to return to Bordewijk and try Restaurant Christophe' on the high end.

Other than that, we are open.

We will be staying in the Jordaan area.

    Suggestions?

    Kip

  2. Thanks for all your input. I have not yet been to any of these cities so I can use all the help I can get.

I seem to have done OK on Copenhagen but need work on the other two.

One thing I neglected to mention is that the couple we are traveling with are not as adventurous diners as my wife and I so I have to factor this in, and they are not willing to spend quite as much money. On the other hand, I do not want to miss great new dining experiences.

However, you have pointed out flaws in my plans I need to address so how about this.

We will be arriving in Copenhagen on 10 May and stay three nights at SAS Royal. Train to Stockholm and stay three nights at Lady Hamilton. Train to Oslo and stay three nights at Thon Opera.

    Stockholm

Sunday - Still need to pick a place - what is open on Sunday?

    Monday - Restaurangen

    Tuesday - Lux

    Oslo

    Wednesday - Kampens Hete

    Thursday - Oslo Spiseforretning

Friday - Bagetelle or Oscarsgate if I can still get a reservation

    Thanks again for your ideas.

    Kip

  3. My wife and I will be traveling with another couple to Scandinavia in May and will be spending three nights each in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo. After some research, I have selected restaurants as follows:

    Copenhagen

    Alberto K

    The Paul

    Noma

    Stockholm

    Grand Verandan

    Den Gyldene Freden

    Lux Stockholm

    Oslo

    Restaurant D/S Louise

    Oslo Spiseforretning

    Babette's Gjestehus

Please comment about my list, and make additional recommendations.

    Thanks,

    Kip

  4. I posted this on another site but have not gotten much of a response, so I figured I would go to the serious foodie site. I just signed up as a general member so I could begin posting.

In mid November my wife and I will be on holiday in Athens on our first visit to Greece. Food and wine are a key part of our cultural travels so I am looking forward to comments and suggestions from the experts. We do not speak Greek, but have survived in the past in areas where we did not speak the local language (we will learn key phrases like please, thank you, where is the bathroom, and red or white wine). Fortunately the rest of the world is bilingual to make up for our shortcomings. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to visit the US and not be able to speak English.

We are interested in a range of experiences from gourmet white tablecloth to local picnic table establishments. I will eat just about anything, but my wife is not quite as adventurous (stays away from shellfish and octopus) but is a real trooper. We will be staying in the Plaka area

I have identified the following possible restaurants.

    Dinner?

    • Psaras Fish Taverna

    • Daphne’s

    • Varoulko?• Hytra

    • Aristera-Dexia

    • Milos Athens

    • Spondi (Or should we follow the chef to Jérôme Serres)?• 48 The Restaurant?

    Lunch?

    • To Palio Tetradio

    • Mamacas?• Orizontes Lykavittou (Is the view worth it?)?• Taverna Tou Psiri?• GB Corner (Is the old time hotel service and view worth it?)

    • O Thannassis

    • Stoa Athanaton

    • Byzantino

Do you agree or have better suggestions or comments? Where would you suggest for late morning snacks to hold us over until a late lunch?

We are also planning a day trip out to Hydra. Any taverna’s open for lunch worth trying???Do we need lunch or dinner reservations this time of the year? (Last September we stopped for lunch at a great tapas bar (Taktika-Berri) in Barcelona on a Tuesday and even arrived early, but they were fully booked. Fortunately we were able to sample the food at the bar so we could understand why they were booked. Next time we will reserve.

    Thanks for your input.
