  1. Could someone cross-reference this with incidence of heart disease??? This thread makes me want to suck on lard
  2. I had an amazing one at Riingo. Got a picture of it too. I haven't had many pork bellies but everyone at the table tried it and their jaws dropped. I know it's one of their signature dishes if not THE signature dish -
  3. Kua A'in has GREAT burgers!!! Love that place. Used to go to the one near Aoyama Gakuin all the time - OK so I think in a show of respect my former company found me an apartment right near "NY Deli" in Akasaka. While diminuitive and overpriced, it was decent. Here's a good writeup and lemme tell you, none of these places would survive a minute in NY, so be it - So I guess I should save up and open a combination Katz's/Ess-a-Bagel and I would be a rich man... http://metropolis.japantoday.com/tokyo/442/dining.asp
  4. Hey guys - I've got some time to kill so i'm going to help you all out - I'm NYer born and bred, lived in Japan 2000-2001, and return frequently. Hi. Most pizza sucks terribly in Tokyo. And then there is pizza-la and pizza hut everywhere - You'll never get the real deal pizza or bagel because of the water and climate. A slice as you know it is rarely found, the only thing barely edible I can think of was GasPanic in Roppongi (the original) sells slices to their drunkards. There are 2 pizza places that are very good in Akasaka but I can't find their meishi. One is if you come from Roppongi-dori towards TBS building, making a left at Ultraman, it's about 1km in that direction. They specialize in cracker-thin pizzas that are DELICIOUS and the chef was an iron chef challenger. The other is in the other direction, it's a B1F Italian restaurant, white clothe tables. Wish I could get more specific but this is enough information to locate either - you might ask the koban or people in akasaka when you get there... Maybe a local can help me out with names here.... Also on that same road between Roppongidori and the TBS biru is a "NY Bagel Cafe" - I'm going back twice by July, so if you're nice to me, I live 2 blocks away from the H&H Factory, I can flash-freeze and bring you an emergency shipment, because, I can totally sympathisize - my advice LEARN TO LOVE THE RAMEN
  5. Al said it best, "If I were the man I was five years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to that place!"
  6. thanks man - yes furthermore I wanted the thread to die! But alas here it is, so I'm happy to report that the correct amount was finally charged today without further incident -
  7. I didn't mean for it to be lodged as a public complaint, I thought this would be the place to ask and obviously there's still confusion over the matter, but as a mod feel free to delete all the posts so we can stick to talking about culinary arts...
  8. Maybe this is the first time I've noticed because it's one of the first times I paid with credit card and a cash tip. Normally I'd see the charge and just assume that was the 20% tip I normally leave. I guess I'm preaching to the choir here but it seems weird for a restaurant to do this, and in fact that BBB article only mentions hotels and rental cars. What am I going to do, break a bunch of dishes AFTER I leave the restaurant? What incidental could they possibly be covering? Maybe it has to do with the fact that they run it once to authorize it, and then again when you put your tip on the card. Not that this has anything to do with the Modern because now it sounds like everywhere does this - I'd like to reiterate I had a GREAT meal there and the service was good too.
  9. No no 2 friends (should have said "a couple"). I don't think anyone on this board would make such a rookie mistake with a party of 6. I will be calling but i'm a bit miffed that someone would take a liberty like that - wouldn't you be?
  10. To be clear it was in the Bar Room, and it does rock. That's an awfully nice bathroom and kitchen. Actually I put it on my debit (tougher to refute). And I'd rather be nice about it... see if I can get a free dinner out of it or something, rather than making a stink about it. Then again, I am posting it in a public forum - maybe someone from Danny's mgmt group reads this...
  11. I ate there with a few friends last night. The meal was great and I'll post about it later, BUT I paid with credit card and my friend left a cash tip with it. I checked my statement today and they had added 20% to it! Now, perhaps something shady happens with cash tips on their end, but does it seem unethical to any one else that they did this? I just would never expect this from a Danny Meyers restaurant...
  12. I'm not a big soup fan - it's like watered down food. And, is chili soup? or chili? But the soup nazi's Lobster Bisque was pretty godly...

    DUMBO

Damn you pan..... blowing up my spot It's very affordable. Italian that good shouldn't be that affordable. Apps up to $12ish and Entrees up to $20ish... I'm scraping my memory, time for a trip out! WITH a bottle of wine you can leave there for under $100 for 2. Cash only. Go there early before they run out of buffalina mozzarella

    DUMBO

Glad you enjoyed it. I normally get the gnochhi, bufalina mozz and roasted peppers, fish special, etc, there, glad to here the ossobucco is just as on point - I'm convinced that that place is the best kept secret in Brooklyn, and by virtue of it being in Brooklyn, the best kept secret in all of NYC! Let's keep it that way.

    Sugiyama

Actually that was cleared up for me last night too - who knew that Nippon Ham was producing American Beef - thanks for asking. Well it was delicious.
  16. Gah Mee Ohk. GREAT soluntang [sp?] (ox bone soup). Cabbage, jalapeno peppers served with miso and GREAT kimchi. Pretty banging pajun and yookhwe. Their menu has like only 10 items that they do really well but of course it's all about that damn soup!
  17. I don't find it amazing but very very very good. And I always order the Bo Luc Lac and agree with Fat Guy's first post for the most part. BUT, there is SOMETHING about that bo luc lac and me and my friends can't put our finger on it. Something in it, something about it, makes you miss it when you can't have it. We're starting to think it's laced with opium, which actually happened to a girl who spend a summer in India back in school - a local ice cream parlor had this amazing ice cream they kept going back for. Long story short they all had to go through rehab.

    DUMBO

Noodle Pudding. Noodle Pudding. Noodle Pudding. It's also closer than a lot of the Manhattan-bridge central restaurants. Did I mention Noodle Pudding?
  19. You haven't checked out the PA forum much have you? There's plenty of restaurants in Philly that can compare to the best New York has to offer, Japanese and otherwise. And there's some we have here that are unique and unlike anything NYC has to offer. ← Yeah sorry, shortly after posting I checked out the Philly forum. Seems like it's vying to be a trendier version of Sugiyama. I didn't mean Philly was a desert, but with such a low Japanese population compared to NYC I can't imagine a lot of authentic Japanese restaurants...
  20. If you check Gothamist they posted some pictures of the interior. I can't tell if it's classy or gaudy. I don't know much about the Philly restaurant, but is it good because it's an oasis in a desert, or does it really compare with top NYC Japanese restaurants?
  21. Yeah sorry it's Scarsdale, but it's right near the Scarsdale/Hartsdale boarder and it's all Greenburgh too. I dunno it's confusing. I first went there I think in '90 or '91 when it really was a biker bar and there were lots of scary bikers there and bikes in the parking lot. Once the suburbanites better found out about their wings they expanded to a 2nd floor and cleaned their image up. On a game night it can be a very long wait. And if you get takeout your car will smell like candlelight wings for a week...
  22. They use meaty, great wings, but not too huge, and some very flavorful sauces, which after experimenting and perfecting my own buffalo wing recipe, I'm starting to think has something to do with the amount of butter or margarine they use in the sauce...
  23. Yes I feel like this is a more exclusive board, and I drop the knowledge here the same as I would with my friends. Other message boards or forums I might not be so loose-lipped about lest the secrets get out, but I don't know any restaurant owner that would complain of too much business.... So like Pan I've posted about most of my secrets - I guess my #1 would still be Noodle Pudding. Everyone I've taken there has always been enormously pleased enough to continually to take the trip over the bridge or even from Weschester - I don't know if it's a secret as much as some very local knowledge but the Candelight Inn in Hartsdale still has better wings than any I've had in the city - My dirty little secret is I'm hooked on this 99cent pizza joint at 42nd and 9th next to the Big Apple - I think it was opened by some immigrant workers who probably worked at a very good pizza place and besides the pedestrian sauce and the overyeasting of the dough they've hit upon the key to what makes some other slice places king - if you move a lot of it, you will constantly be serving a fresh, tasty slice - and I've mastered biking and eating pizza simultaneously
  24. I was at the same branch yesterday too. The Prodigal Daughter dishes were in our menu. We tried something off that Specials page too -- the shredded pork and pumpkin with spicy peppers, which was a little on the bland side. Everything else we had was great, though. ← Oui I was there that torrential downpour day last week and the Prodigal Daughter stuff was on the menu. How are the fresh-kill chicken dishes? And, can you order takeout off the restaurant menu?? I'd like to do that - ....because today I got some takeout Crispy Quail - great! Baby Bok Choy - perfect Soup dumplings - delicious Double-cooked pork and vegetables - didn't know pork could be this tender...
  25. Yeah, Gramercy if money really really really doesn't matter. If you'd like money left for a movie, I'd recommend Hell's Kitchen. But I'm biased...
