  1. Santiago restaurant recommendation - last night in S America Hi guys, tonight is the last night of our 2 month trip in Argentina and Chile. I’m struggling to find a reliable source for a recommendation of where to spend our last night. We are hoping to find somewhere for a memorable dinner to adios our fantastic trip. What are we after, you ask? A couple of things to help (but any suggestion is better than none!): Somewhere we won’t forget and is a good way to send off our last night Preferably a modern take on Chilean food, or (good, fresh, not! fried!) seafood Somewhere we are not rushed and can relax drinking good vino Price is not important – nor is an expensive restaurant required. Good food is though. Preferably not somewhere where the hype is become so large the restaurant has lost its way We are in Bellavista (Providencia?) but can travel anywhere. I would have liked to go to Carlos García’s place Restaurante Fábula (here). Sounds perfect, but it doesn’t seem to be around anymore, nor can I find out anything about him. I know its a bit of a late request (dinner in about 9 hrs!), but if anyone has a recommendation that would be great. Muchas gracias! Oh, and if anyone needs a recommendation of their own, we had a brilliant meal last night at Epicureo (here ) in Bellavista last night. I’ll try to write more of a review another time, but I would suggest its very similar to what I mentioned we are after for tonight. Great modern Chilean food, beautiful wine, relax and nice atmosphere and very good staff. We just found it walking around.
  2. Hi guys, I was hoping you could help me out. Next week I will spend 3 weeks working in Windsor (at the Ford Essex plant - which is a couple of miles south of the river. Google map here) as well as a bit in Dearborn. I haven’t quite decided if I’ll stay in the Windsor or (greater) Detroit area yet. Now, I live in Melbourne, Australia which is a beautiful, vibrant city with a fantastic food/nightlife/bar/cafe scene – I’m hoping to find the same whilst away! A Canadian friend of mine living here lived and worked in Windsor/Detroit for 5 years about a decade ago. He didn’t paint the best picture of the food and nightlife scene in either Windsor or Detroit… Now, I am hoping that with your assistance we can prove him wrong! I have already spent a lot of time reading some of the post here but didn’t come up with much. So what I am hoping for is: 2.Recommendation of places to eat/foodie things to do/good wine bars/etc in Windsor Feel free to throw anything at me that you think I should check out. I’m keen to try anything you think I should ‘experience’ during my stay yet personally (when eating out solidly for 3 weeks!) I try to keep on the healthier side (i.e. good quality food with light cooking techniques letting the raw ingredients come out speak for themselves). But I will still be keen for burgers, ribs, etc. Just tell me the places you like! And I do like good wine…! Oh, and if you have any recommendations for an area to base myself in (or things to do, wine regions etc), that would be appreciated. Thanks very much in advance! Adam

  4. I would recommend the Tony Tan or Essential Ingredient classes: www.tonytan.com.au www.theessentialingredient.com.au Ive done both and really enjoyed them (especially Tony's hands on classes). I've also heard good reports about Meera Freeman: www.meerafreeman.com.au Enjoy!
  5. Thanks guys, great suggestions. Roberts looks like a great place to hang out for a while and I'll be sure to check out those 2 wineries. Again, thanks.
  6. Hi guys, I am heading up to the Hunter Valley for a wedding with my girlfriend in mid September. I have never been there before (I'm a Melbourne boy) and was hoping you could recommend some food 'experiences' worth checking out. I say 'experiences' only because I don’t mind if its breakfast, lunch, dinner, picnics, good pies, great beer, scones, the best locally bred suckling pig, blah, blah, blah. Just as long as you think it's worthwhile. Again, I don’t mind if its $5 or $200 – as long you think it's enjoyable. If it helps at all we prefer the smaller places where they take pride in the food and experience they are offering with an enjoyable atmosphere – if they are attached to wineries, even better! But I more than welcome any suggestion that you have. And if you feel like throwing in any suggestions for wineries to explorer – go right ahead! Many thanks.
  7. Thank you very for the further information guys. I will be printing this out and taking it with me to help in my food journies. zaelic Thanks for your info. We are going to Budesti because its meant to be a one of the better villages to explore around the Maramures region. I (unfortunately) know that Baile-Herculane is meant to be a little touristy but its convient for our entry into Serbia and, well, a dip in a thermal pool sounds ok. Plus it does look rather pretty. Is there a better place close to Timosoria (I am currently at work and cant remember the spelling precisely but its a large city on the train line into Belgrade) you'd recommend? And I understand what you mean by not expecting 'fine cuisine' as I dont! I can get wonderful truffle encrusted foie gras with a caviar sauce her in Oz. I dont mind how 'unexciting' the food may be, but as long as its local Im happy because that to me, when travelling, is exciting. Im definitely not a tripe fan, but when in Rome...! We are also going to Sinaia for some hiking and potentially Garda De Sus for some more hiking. marlena, You can still stay in a few of the monestaries and the one I think you may be think of is the Rila monestaries which is on the way (kind of) to Melnik. Ive also been put onto a couple of good Croatian places on the coast by people I know: Restaurant Nada in Vrbnik http://www.nada-vrbnik.hr/EN/Index.htm Restaurant Kapetanova kuća” in Mali Ston http://www.ostrea.hr/engleski/konoba_en.htm Hotel Kastel in Motovun (truffle region) http://www.hotel-kastel-motovun.hr/eng/Index.aspx?lang=eng Thanks, Adam
  8. Thats brilliant Mistinguett! This is exactly what i am after. I will definitely be going there. I did a search on the web and could not find anything (i didnt expect to!) so if you are willing to email me some directions I would greatly appreciate it. From the description and photo provided you have totally nailed on the head what sort of experiences i am after. Thankyou. And yes, we will definitely be staying in pensions - we are both under 30 and this is the way we love to travel. You just met great people and have wonderful experiences doing it this way. Markets and road stands? I never pass them up! And no - definitely not a lengthly post - feel free to keep going... marlena - thankyou very much as well. I will hunting down this lawyer as well! Any more specific directions to locate this place? Thanks guys - wel thats 2 days of eating sorted, only 58 more to go! Adam
  9. Hi guys, Long time listener, first time caller and all that. I travel for food, small villages and (hopefully) to discover the authentic heart of each country I visit (oh, and photography). I was hoping you could help me out. I am backpacking around Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia for 2 months starting in 1 week’s time. I have already done a search on the forum for all entries related to these countries and have some good ideas – thanks! But it can never hurt to have some more. So if you have some ‘must have dining experiences’ for these countries I would love to hear them. Here’s a little list so that you have a better idea of what I am (and aren’t) looking for: What I am looking for: Authentic Good examples of the local cuisine (no matter how poorly you may rate it – its, to me, part of the experience of travelling. I might not eat marinated cabbage stuffed intestines in my own country, but when travelling, if it’s a local cuisine, bring it on!) Places a local egullet member would be proud to show off as a highlight of ‘their countries’ cuisine) Cheap places or expensive places – that doesn’t worry me. As long as its worth visiting. Nice atmosphere Gorgeous settings are always an advantage (and can always elevate a good experience to a great one) Breakfast, lunch or dinner – I need to eat 3 square meals a day! Places which will be an ‘unforgettable’ memory of my time in that country (museums and castles bore me - give me a restaurant or café any day!) What I am not looking for: Tourist slanted places Themed restaurants Italian, French, Australian cuisine – its needs to be local Places which are ‘forgettable’ Like I said, I am leaving on the 3rd of August, so I would love to hear your recommendations, or you can even email me on alotarot@bigpond.net.au if you really feel like helping me out after that date. Thanks guys, Adam - Australia If your interested these are the places I am exploring: Romania Baile-Herculane Bucharest Sighisoara Viseu de Sus Budesti Bulgaria: Melnik Sofia Veliko tarnovo Arbanasi Tryavna Lyaskovets Koprivshtitsa Bansko Croatia (we’ll have car here so are a bit more mobile): Zagreb Samobor Opatija Volosko Labin Rovinj Motovun Umag Veli Losinj Cres Town Valun Tribunj Trogir Vis island Komiza Milna Dubrovnik Mljet island Korcula Lumbarda Ston and Mali Ston
