  1. Very, very sad news.... Ann did our wedding cake in May and I'm still getting raves from the guests. What am I going to do for our anniversery???? (That top layer got eaten pretty quickly...as did the second layer....) I just assumed I'd order a replica.... And what about my birthday next month???? I told Mr. BLB months ago that I wanted one of her cakes. Sigh.... I did go in today and bought several carmels and cupcakes and toll house cookies just out of the oven. But I never did get to try the chocolate babka and we didn't get a pie at Thanksgiving because we were out of town... etc.... I'm just glad I was "working" from home today so I could throw on sweats and rush down to stock up. You know, I was in on Monday and they didn't say a word. I'm going to go sit in a corner with my cookies and be depressed. I wonder if the mailman has delivered my next Gilmore Girls DVD from Netflix yet... Jennifer
  2. I had a very quick dinner at the bar last night and didn't notice any flying creatures (either fruit or fire...) I did notice that they seemed to be using a stronger smelling cleaning solution at the bar than in previous visits. But the burger was perfect AND Ann finally had a new dessert--the pumpkin and goat cheese cake was amazing. Jennifer Actually...this HAS been a problem the last two times I sat at the bar. Fortunately the friend I took to Palena for her first visit last night loved the food, wine, cocktails and bartender so much that she was willing to overlook what I think are fruit flies. It was kind of gross (although everything else was great). PS I was not the poster on Tom's chat! ←
  3. Friday night was another wonderful dinner at Ray's. Michael, Justin and our lovely waitress whose name I never caught, took great care of us and we had a fabu time. Had a lovely table near the front and it really does pay to go early in the evening before the din gets too loud. I tried the cowboy --oh my! In addition to Friday dinner, it was my breakfast on Saturday morning and hubby's dinner on Saturday night. He had the hanger steak with mushrooms--I think it was better this time than last time. I started with the scallops -- a perfect spicy mix with the cava we started with. Enjoyed one of the merlots with dinner and concluded with that mousse and key lime pie. Perfection! Once again as we were leaving, hubby asked when we could go again. I'm now hitting redial every few minutes to see when we can get in next. Jennifer
  4. Hubby and I are making our return pilgramage (sp?) tomorrow night. Trying to decide if I should insist on taking the subway and really enjoying wine with dinner. Are there any half-bottles available? He isn't likely to drink more than a glass and even in full indulgence mode I'm not likely to be good for more than 2-3 myself. Any guidance a veteran can provide would be appreciated! Thanks! Jennifer
  5. Last weekend, my husband and I had dinner with friends and while I was drinking a very nice merlot, they opened a bottle of white wine for him. I am pretty sure they said it was a white Beaujolais. This is the first wine I can remember him actually enjoying! I clearly must acquire a bottle or two of this for him but I'm at a loss. What should I be looking for? Any winery's to look for? Steer clear of? Thanks! Jennifer
  6. Our six month anniversery dinner last Tuesday: We started we glasses of a lovely cava. Very festive! I had the squash soup which was simply amazing. My only request would be for a touch more cilantro but I'm a total cilantro junkie. I can't remember what Mr. BLB had--the soup had me on another dimension. I had the Diablo steak (blue cheese on the side) and Mr. BLB had the brook trout. Oh, and an order of frites... We both loved our entrees--he had the steak the last time we were there and my two little bites had been haunting me ever sense. I've never really liked the desserts at Firefly much --it seems like they are trying to hard a lot of the time--but the bittersweet chocolate panna cotta made up for every slightly disappointing dessert we've had there. Next time I'm getting my own and not sharing! Derek was the perfect host as always. He remembered which table we always liked at Palena and suggested a similar table for us that was perfect. A large party with 4 kids came in just as our entree was plated and he offered to move us. The kids were fine and I applaud the parents who had clearly reviewed the menu before arriving and immediately order the mac and cheese for the very hungry kids. We had a brief chat with Derek about Ray's and generally enjoyed our evening quite a bit. An A+ effort all around. Jennifer P.S. We used to live acrosss the street from Firefly and went quite a bit and liked it but didn't love it. When we moved uptown and started going to Palena regularly I remember commenting that Palena was doing what Firefly wanted to but wasn't quite getting right. The balance between being a welcoming neighborhood hangout and a great dining experience has to be difficult. I think Firefly is getting much closer to that goal.
  7. Great minds... Me: I made reservations at Firefly for 7pm on Tuesday. Husband: I made 6 pm reservarations. Me: Did you make them online? Husband: I called. Me: I get points from Open Table with mine! Husband: Did you mention it was our six month anniversery? Me: No... Husband: Well I did! So it looks like we're keeping his reservation but moving it to 6:30... The things I do for marital harmony. Haven't been since our 2 month anniversery (I'm sure that after a year I'll be able to convince him to celebrate less. On the other hand I've gotten dinner at Palena, Firefly, and TenPehn since the wedding....) Very much looking forward to Tuesday. Hoping to see Derek, whom we miss greatly at Palena.... Is the menu on the website up-to-date? Jennifer
  8. Oh my!!!!! After all the hype and the 3 week wait to get in, I have to say that Ray's lived up to expectations and surpassed them. Highlights--a warm greeting from our waiter, Justin, who remembered us from Palena (is Frank becoming a launching pad for staff around the city????) and guided our ordering with an amazing sense of what the highlights of the menu were. Terrific bread and wine by the glass (had to drive home...) The scallops were great--a bit too spicy for me but cooked perfectly. My husband reported that the steak was one of the best he ever had--the flat iron with mushrooms and bernaise on the side. I had the hanger steak--cooked just right and beyond compare. Had a little diablo and blue cheese on the side for light dipping. (Good, although the bernaise may have been just a touch better.) I have a perfect little section left for tomorrow's breakfast -- if it survives the night! Desserts--key lime pie and chocolate mousse--gracious end notes and just the right portion size. I think the only downside was our table--we were wedged in to a two-top behind the little station the staff uses for water, etc. So hubby viewed that while I had a wonderful view of the staff dishing out the amazing spinach and mashed potatoes. We asked about another table but were told all the other two's were reserved and were going to be pushed together for larger groups. Please note that not ten minutes later a couple walked in and was seated at a two-top. Sigh... How early do I have to call to get a table that isn't quite so wedged into the kitchen???? But aside from the small disappointment, I can promise we will be back as soon as I can plan far enough in advance to get reservations... Is this becoming the Per Se of DC? Jennifer
  9. Wish me luck! Hubby and I are off for our very first RTS adventure!!!!! Will report back with details later! Jennifer
