The Smell of Microwave Popcorn

In the "Office Aromas, Smelling someone else's food" eGullet member jsmith posted:

Maybe there should be a thread on people reactions to the smell of microwave popcorn being similar to reactions to the taste of cilantro. Half the population thinks its manna from the gods, the other half gets sick from it and can't imagine anyone liking it. The "level" of one's palate doesn't seem to enter into the equation either way.

I was surprised by this reaction since I always enjoy the smell (unless it gets burned  ).

I was curious about the reference to how people either love/hate cilantro since I assumed everyone enjoyed the smell of microwave popcorn popping in the microwave.

So here's the official poll. Like the infamous eGullet "Cake or Pie? Take your pick, But you can't have both!" poll, pick a side.

Do you love the smell of microwave popcorn popping in the microwave?

Or do you hate it?

Vote now!

Love it (as long as it is not burned).

I don't love popcorn, but the smell of someone's popcorn snack in the microwave makes me hungry.

As far as cilantro goes: can't stand it.

Isn't there some kind of issue of lung disorders among the people packing microwave popcorn....

I like the smell

Love eating it, and the smell doesnt both me either...

Although - I don't seem to LOVE the smell of it, it just smells good, as would any other food aroma that I am fond of

I love popcorn.

I hate artificial butter flavoring.

So--I mostly hate microwave popcorn smell.

Some microwave popcorn is natural, without the gaggy "butter" smell.

I pop my corn in the microwave--Orville's brand in a Presto popper, with a little olive oil.

THAT smells good.

Ugh, hate it.

But worse? "Pirate's Booty" white cheddar popcorn. It literally makes me sick to my stomach; instant gag just thinking about it.

I think fish is nice, but then I think that rain is wet, so who am I to judge?

I'm indifferent to the smell of microwave popcorn. Unless it's even slightly burned - then it's awful; there is a person or two at work that haven't yet figured out how to properly nuke popcorn.

When I went to college (dinosaurs roamed the earth then, and popcorn had to be made using hot oil, a pan, and preferably some real butter) the smell would attract people from miles around, including me if I wasn't the one making it.

I have no idea why microwave popcorn doesn't have the same allure; I'd like to think that microwaved partially-hydrogenated gunk just isn't the same, but I really don't know.

edit to add: Cilatro rules.

From far far away...love the idea of toasty micro-popped corn. Fades quickly though.

an old friend used to put kernels in a brown paper bag, bit of tape, pop pop pop.

add melted butter, grated parm, black pepper, and sometimes real bacon bits-and that feels a bit carbonara

UGH.

Real popcorn........fine.

Microwaved popcorn smells like vomit (sorry  )

BURNED microwaved popcorn.....well, we won't even define it.

(My staff knows NEVER to cook popcorn in the office when I am there or all the windows and doors will be open and I'll be bitching up a storm.)

(BTW, I'll eat poporn, occasionally. Used to find cilantro soapy, kinda like it now. )

I'm all agreeable today. I'm with K, hate microwave popcorn. My kids love popcorn of all kinds and I've been mean for years, refusing to buy it. I really DO like popcorn, but only the real kind. Finally came to my senses this Xmas and bought a hot air popper. It's so much FUN watching the kernels fly around til they pop...kids think it's great. And it smells so good!
