Las Vegas for Locals

Recommended Posts

OK, I admit it, I'm not dining on the strip every night, I'm not making cross town pilgramages to Rosemary's, I'm not regularly subjecting myself to the perils of Commercial Center in order to get my Thai fix. So what's left after the "usual suspects" of the Las Vegas discussion threads are eliminated?

I find it hard to believe that in a city with a population approaching two million people and with more than a hundred pages of restaurant listings in the yellow pages that the only places that people dine are at the temples of (insert name of famous chef here).

So local localtons, where are we really dining, munching, grubbing and feeding ourselves? Where do you go to get a big fat breakfast on Sunday? What is your reliable weekday dinner out ? Where do you go to celebrate - cause I know you're not going to the strip after working on it all day. In short, where are we REALLY eating Las Vegas?

Sorry that I do not remember the names of the places. I likee to go to local places in Henderson or on the northeast section of Los Vegas. Lots of good places. up arround Freemont there are tons of places to explore that won't leave you busted.

Melanger,

Does Memphis Championship Barbecue (3 locations) or Settebello in Henderson count?

How about Chris Cognac's suggestions from his FN series, Las Vegas episode? How about downtown Las Vegas? Fremont Street? Chinatown, or is that still too touristy?

It sounds like you're not living in Summerlin or NLV, ehh? Professionally speaking, I hope Clark County would build an intelligent freeway system so people can go from Boulder City to Summerlin or NLV without a major headache.

I'll admit I eat at the major casinos on a regular basis, but that's because those are my neighbourhood joints (I live and work between the Convention Center and the Strip)..

Other than that, my roomates and I like Tacos Mexico, Sushi Yamada, this pho place on the top level of that big asian complex on Spring Mountain where Ranch Market is that I can't remember the name of, M & M Soul Food on Charleston...

we used to eat at the Bunkhouse a lot, but the management stinks and it over shadows the food....

Go Raw on Windmill is awesome and lets me express my Oregonian tendencies

Paymon's on Maryland is my pick when I want Mediterranean....Otto's has great shakes....And Capriotti's Turkey sandwich is lust worthy

Oh BTW, does anyoneknow where to get good humbao in this town? I have been craving it for months and yet to find someplace that has it

Man, I was hoping this thread would get more replies.

I'm heading to Vegas the last week of March and would forever be in the debt of anyone willing to offer some additional 'when in Rome' type suggestions.

Also, any non food related suggestions would be fantastic via pm.

thanks

Not quite hom bao (which is Chinese), but the people in Hawai'i have something called "manapua" (descended from the Chinese hom bao that got changed a little when it was brought to Hawai'i by plantation workers) which is like a turbosized hom bao. It can either be baked or steamed (like hom bao).

There's a place on Flamingo that has all kinds of manapua. They should have the BBQ pork ones that are very similar to hom bao.

Miulang

'Ale'as Manapua

All types of manapua, steamed, baked, lup cheong, even kalua manapua. Hawaiian Style pastries and Plate lunches also served.

I just moved to Vegas from Hawaii and would like to find the best local food i can.

Suggestions please on where to go for :

Any good Latin American food....

Where to get fresh locally roasted coffee beans that i can buy fresh out of the roaster ?

Where do i go to get the best baguette in the city ......

Kick ASS Chinese ......

Vietnamese thats done right! .....

A tortilla factory or bakery that really makes them RIGHT !

and FABULOUS pastry( even MEXICAN) where the chef KNOWS what he's doing.

I am really looking for joints where the cooking is REALLY good home cooking.

I know about LOS already so that takes care of my Thai cravings.

I am looking for places i can take away stuff...not necessaily dining in.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated..... as all i am doing at this point is driving around and dropping into places that look interesting.

I LOVE family run places.

thanks for any help you can give me.

Aloha Ono Loa!!

Congratulations on your move to Las Vegas!!

The questions you're asking are dealing more with local Las Vegas, not touristy Las Vegas (i.e., The Strip), ehh?? What part of Las Vegas have you moved into? North LV? Henderson, Boulder City? Summerlin? That will help geographically speaking ...

There's a food segment on the local radio station KNPR called "Food for Thought." It's hosted by John Curtas, who's an eGullet member. He's familiar with the local Las Vegas scene, as well as some other eGullet members who live in the Las Vegas area.

You'll probably have to do some research on your own and report back to us, okay??

Hi thanks for your post...i am living in henderson waaaay up boulder hwy. i have lived in vegas before so i thought i'd give it a go again since the weather is cooling now.

i know people are probablly hesitant to give local recs here for fear that the place will be overun. i understand that so i figure i will have to search out things on my own.

as far as something like a great pastry shop or a properly done baguette...that would be a help if anyone can suggest where to go. i am assuming i will have to go to bouchon's pastry shop for that.

and i can manage to hunt down the fresh roasted beans as well. i am spoiled though from getting local coffee beans grown down the street where i lived in hawaii. LOL.

i have seen some tortilla factories around in my travels here and if anyone has gotten product from them they like i would appreciate knowing where you went.

its been a long long time since i lived here and things sure have changed....lots and LOTS of things to choose from when it comes to good eats on the cheap.

if anyone has any suggestions.... that would be great. thanks.
