"Menu for Hope"

Food bloggers round the world are now participating in "Menu for Hope III", to raise money for the <a href = "http://www.wfp.org/english/">World Food Program</a>.

The project was conceived and is being hosted by Pim at <a href = "http://chezpim.typepad.com/blogs/2006/12/menu_for_hope_i.html">Chez'>http://chezpim.typepad.com/blogs/2006/12/menu_for_hope_i.html">Chez Pim</a>. Last year over $17,000 was raised for UNICEF, this year the donations already look like that wonderful total will be easily beaten.

There are some fantastic prizes - dinners at some of the best restaurants in the world (including Manresa, Tetusuya's), lots of books (including an autographed set of four by Anthony Bourdain), cooks tools, food parcels, wine and wine books, also services such as photo lessons and web-site design.

If you love food, are grateful for having plenty of it and want to help those who dont, please consider buying one or more virtual raffle tickets at $10 each.

Thanks Janet for posting the link to Menu for Hope. We are into our second day and we've raised over $7,700 already!

I'm about to add a bunch of great new prizes to the raffle, among them a one day stage at Alinea, which Grant and Nick have kindly offerred. It's really exciting, since Alinea doesn't let regular people like us stage, so this is a great chance for anyone who's a fan to see the action live! The stage will finish with a bang, with a full dinner with wine in the dining room! How cool is that?

Among other fun prizes is an invitation to have coffee with Thomas Keller, also to tea with Harold McGee. A chance of a lifetime for the lucky winners of our raffle.

Thanks indybear, I was just thinking this thread needed reviving - especially as some new prizes have been added since the appeal started.

If you haven't at least been over for a look at <a href= "http://chezpim.typepad.com/blogs/2006/12/menu_for_hope_i.html">Menu for Hope</a> then you dont deserve to call yourself a food-lover, foodie, gourmand, gourmet, glutton, or epicure - or whatever else it is you call yourself.

There are some truly amazing things there - some that you literally cannot buy, and all for a wonderful cause.

So Menu for Hope II is officially closed. Thank you eG for letting us toot our horn here.

We finished at $58,156.70, a success beyond any of the organizer's dream. Now how are we ever going to top it next year? :unsure:

Blogosphere is great indeed. And a large part of its greatness is how it fosters communities, not unlike the one here on eG. It's only with the help of that community, our community of food bloggers and readers/supporters that we've managed to come this far on this campaign. This is not something I could have ever managed on my own.

And the WSJ called us a bunch of fools writing for imbeciles :rolleyes:

Using the same inclusive logic, we could lump WSJ journalists in with contributors to some of the dreadful tabloids as poorly skilled scurrious scandalmongers who cater to the lowest common denominator of "news" reader. Luckily, I presume that the highly intelligent WSJ readers manage to find their journal of choice amongst the dross on the newstands. Unlike bloggers of course.

Or, to paraphrase someone else on something else - if a prestigious journal prints a stupid thing - it is still a stupid thing.

Here's an idea. Next year, ahead of the campaign, someone (you, Pim?) should perhaps give the WSJ an opportunity to atone for their dual sins of elitism and stupidity, and ask them to promote it in their worthy pages amongst their worthy readers.

Don't confuse the reporters at the WSJ (or not all of them) with the editors and those who are responsible for the editorial page and most of the op ed articles. WSJ reporters still do some very good investigative reporting and sometimes the WSJ manages (whether unintentionally or not, I don't know) to get someone good to do some book reviews and theater reviews.

Oth, the editorial stuff has gone from bad to worse to putrid and I definitely agree with what you say regarding the editorial people. In at least one editorial I glanced at once (in the past 6 months) somebody had claimed as fact, something that was most definitely not a fact and wasn't even a well supported opinion. The Letters to the Editors aren't even much good anymore because the editor rarely prints a letter that differs from the views expressed in the editorial pages.

The Financial Times sometimes has some interesting food/cooking articles.

I'm sorry that I did not see this thread until today and so missed an opportunity to participate in this wonderful raffle for a good cause.
