Just did, don't think much of it. :hmmm: I looked for "dips" and was sent to a page full of main dishes by (giggle...) Rachel Ray. Not very user friendly, yet!

Even their own links supply wonky results. I clicked on "Risotto" on the main page and the first two items that came up on the list were "Roasted Tomatoes" and "Creamy Eggs on Toast" (both recipes by Rachael Ray – are we seeing a trend?). Then I clicked on the "Chili" link at the top of the page. The first items were "Thai Beef Salad", "Bulgur Wheat and Shrimp Salad", and a little further down was "Fish and Chips". Nice... :raz:

I'm gonna go bake something…

wanna come with?

Martha and Rachel aside, I did enjoy perusing the "Restaurants and Cooks" and "Chef's Table" tabs with great some pretty decent articles on Batali's home kitchen and Adria's down-home cookbook and DVD. I guess these articles were originally from Food & Wine, but it's nice that they're being published here for us non-subscribers.

Food & Wine is owned by American Express publishing. They must have a content partnership with Yahoo!

However, Food & Wine already has content online, so it's hard to see what value Yahoo! adds.

All in all, a lame and perfunctory effort by Yahoo!

Here's the CNN story on this topic.

Media partners include Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., (Charts) Wolfgang Puck, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Food & Wine, Epicurious, allrecipes.com, Cook's Illustrated, Eating Well, Taste of Home, and Reader's Digest.

Which explains the Rayhoo bent.

I was interested to see that one of the main movers behind this was Deanna Brown, founder of Epicurious who is now the general manager of Yahoo Lifestyles.

My dad said when he saw Robin Meade read the story about this this morning, she nearly lost in on the line about "food pornography" like she had never heard of it. She had to repeat it 2 or 3 times before she got it and almost lost it laughing. (My dad has a huge crush on Robin, so he thought it was So Cute, which, I in turn thought was So Cute! ) Also, a fact in the story as to why this site was built was that between 4 and 4:30 pm, Yahoo's activity would drastically increase and most of the searches were food or recipe related. He couldn't remember the numbers exactly, but it impressed him.

I haven't tried any of the Google groups, yet, but at my last check there were 308 related to food and cooking. You can find that list here.

disappointing search results... I get better returns for recipes using the plain old 'search the web' version.

Looks like an attempt at corporate food to cut out blogs by 'real people' as a resource. Foodie blogs rank pretty well in regards to search return rankings- its no wonder Yahoo has taken this on :grumble:

Just had a look-see; seems to me that all the recipes are from Epicurious. Why bother?

Maybe it will grow. I was pretty disappointed too. Google's always building something new and different.

Here is one of the recipes that is featured today.  Am I crazy or is something missing from the ingredients?  All I can see are the ingredients for the raspberry filling - I can't see the ingredients for the cake or the frosting - am I blind or what?

If you're blind (Godess forbid) then so am I!

I've heard of not allowing cookies but this 'hide cake' concept is a new one.

Add me to the unimpressed and start a new "dismayed" list: I clicked on the Local Dining Guide link and much to my surprise, Kansas City was on the "major cities" list (despite the fact we rarely make it into those ranks in the 'major' food periodicals). So I clicked on our fair city to see if it looked advertorial or 'real' and to my even greater surprise, was taken to a page (with map) of Kansas City KS! For those unfamiliar with the area - and with all due respect to KCK, home of many delicious restaurants most of which are small, ethnic and rarely heard of outside of these forums - KCK (as it is called locally) is not the Kansas City most people think of. KCMO is the home of the majority of restaurants typically associated with Kansas City (although that's becoming less true as the Johnson County suburbs continue to grow and open some interesting non-franchise places). Anyway, I'm rambling but I just found it interesting that they defaulted to KCK as it gaves a rather different perspective to dining here than most people expect. Yes, there are fabulous mom and pop eateries, with a heavy leaning toward Latino cuisines, but I would guess the typical yahoo food visitor would be looking for something else entirely. I'm not going to call their attention to it, though. It would be great if some tourist dollars found their way into the urban core on the KS side and all of those hard-working, unsung heros in tiny kitchens benefitted from what is probably just lazy research.

Google has recently unveiled an application to create your own custom google search that culls through url's of your specifying.

Elise of Simply Recipes has just put up FoodBlogSearch.com which searches through the food blogs listed on her site.

This is a foodie search that warms my heart, a plebian conglomeration - unlike the Yahoo Food venture.
