Eleven and Gambrinus (in Lisbon)

Recommended Posts

I had one of my most memorable meals in lisbon at Gambrinus in 2001. Not so much for the food (which was simple but well-executed), but the atmosphere. It was very much a men's club/steakhouse feel, my GF and i ate at the bar for lunch and sat next to a couple of very nice locals who talked and talked. I had chicken piri-piri, can't remember what she had, pork and clams maybe. Combined with a nice old red it was a good lunch, i'd recommend it but wouldn't organize around it.

The best meal we had was at Sua Excelência in Lapa...Angolan and Portugese food served in a dining room that looked like an empty wedding reception hall during a power outage. We immediately regretted being there because it looked like some sort of trap, but we had very good food (again I had chicken, a moamba, great) and extremely helpful and subtly attentive service.

By all indications we also had feijoada at a newer waterside restaurant that was a good cab ride out of the center, but its name and location were erased by caipirinhas. All i have is photographic evidence that we were there.

Today, Eleven, is the best restaurant in Lisbon.

Other good restaurants are: http://www.tavaresrico.pt

Pragma Restaurant Casino of Lisbon http://www.casino-lisboa.pt

Gambrinus is a good restaurant for seafood.

30 km from Lisbon www.ginchotel.pt one of the best restaurants in Portugal.

You can also check Flores, at the new Bairro Alto Hotel(Praça Luis de Camões)

For a more casual meal you could try Cafe 3, at Tivoli Forum (Avenida da Liberdade) or Yasmin, near Mercado da Ribeira.

Can anyone provide a price range for Eleven? Their website offers their menu and tasting menu, but does not include any prices.

Last time I had dinner in Eleven, the price was 110 euros pp , menu with wines.

  • 1 month later...

Ate at Restarant Eleven last night.

Maybe a bad night but dissapointing, sort of faded.

Heart was in the right place, all the trimmings but lots of details wrong.

Main fault was long waits between courses - half an hour or so, and the restaurant was not full. Nice bread, not made in house, and served cold and a little dry.

I had a poached egg with ratte potato puree (over processed and gluey) with fresh white Alba truffles, then poached baccalao (salt cod) on underdone and tasteless blini ( no detectable sour or buckwheat) with miniscule caviar. All the food was to my taste over salted - I guess the chef smokes.

We drank a rose cava and a white Dao, both chilled to within an inch of their lives - the sort of mistake a restaurant of this caliber should not make.

There was a truffle tasting menu at 168 EU

You should have not lefted your hotel... your description of what you had at Eleven is EXACTLY what I feel for it : a mistake.

1 Michelin star after one year oppened tells a lot about how the Michelin ratings are obtained as well....

Eleven is not a place where you go to eat, it's a place where you go to be seen... unfortunately that's how it works here in Lisbon...
