We (with large party) has an excellent meal at Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse in the Four Seasons. The steaks were quite good and the service was superlative. The sommeliers also recommended some excellent wines from smaller producers. It was an all-around great experience and actually better than (Thanksgiving) dinner at Aureole the next night.

We like Delmonico's which is owned by Emeril. They are always very friendly and professional. To me , most steak in these top tier places is basically the same. We have also eaten at the Palm which is fine but not fabulous. However, since they have one in Chicago,I know exactly what I am getting and that is the good news and the bad news.

Okay, here's my $5 prime rib story.

I went to one of those restaurants with the huge "$5 prime rib" advertisements. I sit down, and the $5 prime rib is not on the menu; there's a $12 prime rib on the menu. I ask the waiter about the $5 prime rib, and he plays dumb. It's only after I demand the item on the sign outside that I get it.

Presumably if I order the "prime rib" I would get the menu price and not the sign price.

Moral: you can get a $5 prime rib, but you have to be firm about it.

You're right, by a long shot the best $4.99 steak anywhere.

OK, Ellis Island is a bit of a dump and they always make you wait 20 minutes to get a seat (in the hope you'll gamble), but I've had much worse steaks for $20.

As for getting the steak for $4.99, just ask it wasn't a problem.

The rib and chicken special is awesome as well...6.99 cant be beat..check em out!

I checked most of the vegas threads on here, but was wondering if anyone had any new takes on vegas steakhouses? Eating at DB Brasserie and Bradley Ogden on two other nights, but looking for a good steak dinner to impress the in-laws :).

Hmmm.... I like N9NE at the Palms. But it's not a traditional steakhouse. It's very hip. and loud. But they cooked a mean steak for me. And it's a cool place. If you are into cool, hip places.

This past June, I had a VERY nice meal at Austin's Steakhouse at the Texas Station casino. It's off the strip. The part of town looks slightly "dicey". But it was a very nice meal. I'd recommend it.

For a fancy place in a fancy strip casino? How about Prime? Never been, but I hear good things.

Yeah, I know. A little wierd to go to Vegas with the in-laws, but it probably won't be as awkward as you would imagine. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

I've heard big things about Prime, it is on the short list for sure.

Prime is good, Delmonico's is simply outstanding. I've been to both and Delmonico's is always our go to place for steak in Vegas. Ask for the parmesan truflle chips to nibble on to start.

Prime in the Bellagio. Food and service are great, surroundings are elegant, and the dancing water show or whatever it's called is not nearly as geeky as it sounds.

I've eaten at Prime. Definitely dress up. I posted my report here.

I have not eaten at Delmonico ... yet. I keep hearing wonderful things about that place from Marlene, who knows meat.

As for Prime, I recommend making a reservation later in the evening, after 8:00 p.m., outside in the patio area. Hopefully, by that time, the dancing water show called Fountains of Bellagio will begin. Spectacular display of waterworks with piped-in Andrea Bocelli music (and other selections) never ceases to amaze me. That should definitely impress the in-laws, along with the steak dinner ...

I tend to be a conservative diner, but like to think I know a good steak when I come across one. I have had NY strip steaks at both Out Backs (Flamingo drive accross from the Rio and on the strip accross from Treasure Island). I am fond of dry aged beef and both these places have delivered what I think to be top quality at a reasonable price. There is also a Ruth Chris on Flamingo and Decature, but I have not tried it. I like my steaks rare and I think the steaks at both Out Backs were outstanding for the price.

Marlene has it right....Delmonico's for sure! Best steak I have EVER had.

While I have never had the opportunity to go there personally, If you want to go off the strip I have seen a lot of good buzz about Bob Taylor's Ranch House: which is a more local place- It broils the steaks over an open wood pit, It was reccommended all over the roadfood.com website- http://www.bobtaylorsranchhouse.com/ is their link.

Steak- YUM-

We also had an excellent dinner at Hugo's cellar in the 4 Queens and the prime rib we had was wonderful- steaks that were coming out looked great, and the ladies all get a rose when they walk in. I'm sure any mother in law around wouldn't mind that either.

I found Prime to be excellent as well. Definately on the higher end, less traditional. My personal favorite is Del Friscos, a bit more old school, similar to a Mortons but a much better steak in my opinion, great ambiance, black tie'd waiters and a piano in the bar. Its off strip in the high end office area, a big power dinner type place. Great wine list too.

Prime recently turned over its management, chef, and some staff. That said, the "lake view" seats are great. I'm not sure whether the patio serves dinner, but it is definitely available for drinks. Delmonico's atmosphere, in my opinion, does not compare to Prime.

Personally, I thought the rib eye was better at Delmonico. The NY at Prime never let me down.

Charlie Palmer in the Four Seasons (Mandalay Bay), has been garnering very positive reviews, but I haven't been there yet.

jonnymikes, if possible, would you please give us some more details about your trip, where you and your in-laws are from, first-time Vegasites, and any other culinary characteristics. Food likes/dislikes? Are they easy to impress? Are they foodies/eGers as well? I suspect not, based upon your request to find "a good steak dinner to impress the in-laws."

There are other steakhouses which I haven't tried yet (Smith & Wollensky's, Craftsteak). And there is Lawry's the Prime Rib (which is different from steak, IMO), off the Strip.

Lreda, I just checked the Mandalay Bay website and I couldn't find that "4710 Restaurant" you were mentioning. Different casino, perhaps?

While I didn't have steak here, the restaurant with 4 digits, something like 4710 in Mandalay Bay, the meat looked tp notch. I'd give it a look-see if you don't have a reservation.

The restaurant was called 3950. It's closed. Michael Mina's new steakhouse will take its place.
