can anyone tell me where i can buy paneer without making the trek all the way out to punjabi market, preferably somewhere close to downtown, the drive sounds like a good bet but where specifically?

"All the way out to the Punjabi market..."

I bet the drive from downtown to Main and 49th will be about the same as the drive from downtown to Commercial and X. Even if it's 20 minutes instead of 15, I say invest your time and get the real stuff!

Alternately, perhaps one of the many "upscale" Indian places around South Granville?

Edited: just realized, do you mean paneer in the prepared form or paneer in the ingredient form? In which case S.Granville may be out.

I think they sell Paneer at Rangoli...but I could be wrong... could be Saag Paneer only.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just returned from my trip to San Francisco and my friend told me that Scharffen Berger is one of the best chocolates made in the States. I bought the semi-sweet dark (65%) and it was very very good. The lingering after taste was just heavenly.

I was doing some research on chocolates tonite and found ratings for Valrhona even higher. Now where can I get my hands on some dark Valrhona in Vancouver?

Anybody know?

I buy it at Shoppers Drug Mart...or Sears...sometimes Zellers or Walmart...for sure have it at Safeway and Save-On as well. It's pretty available in bar form. Good stuff...I use the 90% to make killer chocolate cherry macaroons.

I think that Whole Foods carries it too - but I am sure that the places mentioned up thread would probably be more price effective.

When chocolate gets too dark - I always find that flavors don't blossom in my mouth (God - I sound like one of the women voice-overs on Japanese Iron Chef - something is always exlpoding in their mouths) - there needs to be something to carry the flavor to the pallette - otherwise super dark chocolate tastes just tastes powdery to me. For example - the Schaffenberger Bittersweet tastes fantastic to me - but their Dark Chocolate is seemed one note and crumbly.

Please keep us informed on your tasting...

So, keeping things OT - Whole Foods sells a variety of chocolate in large block form - you may want to check it out if you are near the North Shore.

Meinhardt does not have 70% Guanja (or, at least they didn't a few days ago.) They have white, milk, and 64% (Manjari).

Urban Fare has the 70% sometimes, along with the Manjari.

I like both Scharffen Berger and Valrhona. I've tasted the two 70% chocolates side by side, and the SB 62% (semi-sweet) against the Valrhona 64%. I prefer to 70% Valrhona to the 70% SB (I find the Valrhona more floral and I like the acidity and long finish), and I prefer the 64% Valrhona to the 62% SB for the same reasons. However, I bake often with the 99% SB because I can't find 99% Valrhona.

It really depends on what you're using the chocolates for, though--whether you are using them as pure eating chocolates, or whether you are using them in baking. I can see myself eating quite a lot of 62% SB in one sitting on its own, because the flavour is more mild (though still excellent). For baking, I think I prefer combining the 99% SB for unadulterated chocolate flavour with a few ounces of Valrhona for the different fruit/coffee notes.

Wow, from the sounds of it, you can buy Scharffen Berger here in Vancouver too!?!?

Why did I hurl them all the way across from SF in the first place!?!?!?

Do let me know where I can buy Scharffen Berger locally, that would be greatly appreciated. :)

(Apparently those baking bars I bought resembles bombs on security scanners... as the seller warned me to bring them back by hand and not in suitcases. I didn't listen... and guess what, they did go through my suitcase and opened up the SB bars)

to offer you even more choice (hopefully not more confusion), give El Rey chocolate a try if you can put your hands on it. Whole foods carries it at times. Only chocolate to be both grown and processed in Venezuela, fairtrade, on its way to be organic, and of excellent quality. On par wth Valrhona and others, and a little less expensive.

Whole Foods cheaper than Gourmet Warehouse? I wonder what else GW sells at higher prices than 'regular' stores?

I have noticed Lindt chocolate is sold just about everywhere these days and at reasonable prices. In a pinch I have dashed over to London Drugs and got a couple of bars when I was in the middle of a recipe only to discover that my baking chocolate had been eaten (perils of teenage children).

Cheers,

Karole

My better half mentioned an article she read recently that mentioned sea asparagas. Apparantly it's more delicate and less woody than regular asparagas, and it's in season now. It sounds interesting, and I wondered if anyone knows where to find some here in Vancouver?

I'm sure you've already visited this site:

http://www.westcoastseaweed.com/seabean/nscp_toc/index.html

Don't see any prices listed. Fascinating, I would definitely try some if there was a local source.

Not the most user-friendly web site, but on the links page they indicate that The Salmon Shop at Granville Island Market carries it, along with Sasamat Seafood in North Van.

I'll try to head down to the market tomorrow and see what I can find.

Or, perhaps, you'll sea what you might find, including sea asparagus!

Lame, I know... it's late

I usually pick it up at Granville Island.

BTW, it is absolutely NOTHING like Asparagus. It's good, but it's more like seaweed than asparagus. My favorite prep is lightly saueteed in some butter, with garlic, fleur de sel and a squeeze of lemon. Pair that with a nice piece of Sockeye and that's an excellent fresh dinner. Let us know what you guys think of it when you get a chance to try it.
