Lunch in Newport

Recommended Posts

I have a four hour wait in Newport this coming Monday (forgot to renew the families passports so I'm paying outrageous amounts for the superfast service  ))

I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere to eat in the centre. Not really bothered about cuisine or style, quite happy to go on anyones recomendations, and keep me out of the shops for a while

Thanks in advance

Erica

As you might imagine, Newport isn't blessed (I could stop there) with too many worthwhile places to eat. The one that stands head and shoulders above the rest is The Chandlery. It's just out of the centre but walking distance as I recall...77-78 Lower Dock Street 01633 256622.

Go to Cardiff. It's only about 10 mins on the train.

Come out of the station, turn right, walk up to the traffic lights (200yds). Across the road on your left is the aglomeration of Champers, La Brasserie and Le Monde. Go to whichever is open at lunch time (only one of them used to be but they are all linked.

They kept me sane a few years back when I was spending two nights a week in Cardiff.

(How can their be a Newport, Gwent when there is no Gwent?)

Best wishes,

Cancel the Monday appontment and re-book for another day ! That way you can have lunch at the Armless Dragon in Cardiff - they don't open Mondays.

Worth the short drive up to Abergavenny I would have thought-the Foxhunter, Cideer Mill for a nice lunch in Crickhowell or hasn't Stephen Terry got a new place thereabouts.

Just to say that I had a very relaxing day out in Cardiff whilst I waited for my new biometric passport. I ended up at Woods Brasserie in Cardiff Bay, and completely freaked out the staff by eating on my own!! Will post later with details.. but have made a mental note to revisit Cardiff another time.
