Best Fishmonger in Vancouver?

Recommended Posts

^Thanks. I tried to plate something decent for the picture. I actually ate the other crab standing next to the sink, with melted butter. No pic of that, obviously.

Why not? We've seen your "staged" food porn. Now, we want the real thing!!

nice work btw

I went to Steveston today...no ships. I usually buy salmon and shrimp there during the summer, though. Do the ships only come on the weekends?

So I went to Steveston Fish, right by Timothy's Frozen Yogurt. The shop smelled...fishy. The fish looked tired. Just thought I'd save someone a trip.

Every store there is pretty sad, old and tired. The one across from the fishy place is an embarassing reflection of supposed Canadiana. For an area that is growing so much, the business development is lacking inspiration. Have wondered about the fish store on the next road up, further west, beside the greek restaurant?

So I went to City Fresh (on No. 3 Road, in the same complex as Chapters) and they had Dungenous crab on sale for $2.99/lb. I also picked up some fresh (in the shell) scallops.

Good to know, thanks. The produce seemed a bit tired, would like to find a place that sold some fresher stuff, including thai basil, mint, etc. but saw frozen kaffir lime leaves there. Was the crab live? Lovely presentation of your creations.

^I didn't walk by the other fish store in Steveston, sorry!

I agree about the produce at City Fresh. I never get my produce there. Yes, the crabs are live. There seems to be perhaps 2 weeks in the summer where all the Chinese grocery stores have live Dungenous crab for $2.99, so the deal might be going on at T&T, Empire, etc. as well.

(BTW: the fishmonger will kill the crabs for you for $3.99/lb, but I'm assuming we don't have any wusses on this food board. )

Joining the chorus denouncing that fish store in Steveston. Smells horrible, looks unclean, and is expensive. I have no idea how they stay in business. There isn't a business on Bayview in Steveston that shouldn't be shut down for crimes against good taste. Yet the shops on Moncton, the old main drag of Steveston are uniformly interesting and very nice. The tourists get shafted.

In the same room with now closed Save-On-Meat (close to A&N) on W. Hastings, there was a a fish store where I used to buy Indian candy for much, much less than in supermarkets where the Indian candy is ridiculously high priced.

Does anyone know where the fish store moved ? Or who was their supplier for the Indian candy ? Thank you.

For the best prices its gotta be a chinese seafood market.  I go to Hung Win on Gore at Keefer and Yat Ming on Kingsway at Fraser. Otherwise theres T&T.
