Deals around town

Recommended Posts

Went to Winners on Lougheed and Madison and found a lot of kitchen related goodies. Bought 5 cake stands, 3 made of colored glass ($7 and $9) and two made of terra material ($20 each.) These would look great for a restaurant or bakery's counter.

Bought a mini fluted tart pan for $20. I resisted buying all the different bundt mold pan ($20) and heavy duty cookie sheets (which includes Paderno.)

Boyfriend bought a great quality sauce pot, baking sheet and kitchen toys.

There were lots of quality knives, plates, whisks, enameled cast iron (La Cruset), salt/pepper grinder (one of which was 3 feet tall!), pots and pans, and so much more!

I know the downtown Winners do not have close to the stuff as Burnaby's Winners.

Happy treasure hunting.

From the May 12 edition of The Daily CityFood:

As a mother’s day weekend special, les amis du Fromage [sic] will be putting all their small individual cheeses on sale for an additional 10% off all marked prices. Sale is limited to stock on hand. Sorry, no raincheques.

The big lobsters are back: at Osaka Supermarket, Yoahan Centre, No. 3 Rd., they had some monsters for $8.99 a lb. Thinking of buying two tomorrow to feed four.

My Gawd I need to find a pot big enough for these suckers. The last time I bought one we had to chop it into four to fit each quarter in the pot one at a time!

More deals to be had for the cheese lovers among us... Les Amis du Fromage had several sought-after (and usually expensive) cheeses in their -50% section this morning.

I got one Vacherin Mont d'Or, one Epoisses (yes, I like my cheese pungent :raz: ), one Gaperon, two tubs of Mozzarella di Buffala and a small piece of triple cream Coeur de Bourgogne for under $35!

I had another sighting of the jumbo lobster yesterday at the Tinseltown T&T for 7.99 a pound.  Geez, the claw on one of the lobster was almost the size of my head!

Oh god they're back. We bought a 5 pounder last time they went on sale and I couldn't for the life of me fit it in my already large pot. We had to put the pincers in one load, the head in another and the body in the last. The upshot was I had a tonne of shell for bisque mmmm.

Bisque was exactly what I was thinking when I spotted them. I also wondered if the flesh was tough, as they're so huge (I'm thinking old). How was the beast you had?

I just might have to.....

You are a woman after my own heart! Was it the Gaugrey Epoisses? Truly awesome stuff. I've jad my fill of Vacherin for the year, but the Mozzarella sounds like a trip is required ....

Yes, the Epoisses is the Jean Gaugry, with marc de Bourgogne... yum!

There were, I think, three containers of Mozzarella left after I bought mine. In spite of the cool weather, I am looking forward to a nice Caprese salad (if I can find decent tomatoes tomorrow, that is)

Meat was actually surprisingly tender on the 5 pounder. Not sure about the 6 and 7s but I was wary of this as well. There are rumours that if you kill the lobster when it is relaxed (how is a good question) the meat will be more tender and not as tense from (stress?). We put ours in the fridge for an hour or so till it got sleepy then POW it didn't now what hit it - at least I hope it didn't.

Bargain! - The Korean sub style sandwiches at the back of the Asia Market on Hastings near Main. Chinese sausage, various other fillings. $2.50 gets you a good size sandwich!

Other bargains - Don't need your prosciutto or salami's in perfect slices? Planning on chopping them up anyway? Then ask for the ends. They are often sold off cheap!

It's that time of the year again when the LDB warehouse clean house.

Various types of wines are set up in some stores and the discounted price will take effect this Monday.

Each store will have different wines so you'll have to shop around. Personally, I would check out Cambie and 39th, and the specialty stores such as Dunbar and 18th, Thurlow, and West Vancouver.

You can wait for the new February product guide and check the website to see which store has what.

Also, Dunbar and 18th is renovating and they usually discount products to make room for new products.

Have fun shopping.

Ha! That's funny. I was at the LDB Specialty store in Burnaby (Kingsway) last Sunday and asked the product specialist about that very thing and she had no clue as to what I was talking about, had never heard of it.

Are you sure it was an LDB store and not a private store? The discounted wine sale started on Sunday and I've seen them at the Maple and Broadway store last Friday. These sales have been going on for the last 7 years since I've been made aware of them. Maybe I'm wrong about it being available at all stores. I'm usually in Vancouver when I see these discounts.

I've seen 2003 Gallo Chardonnays for $12 (marked down by $5) that looks decent. There's a German Reisling (regular price $14) and I'm waiting for the price drop this Monday at Maple and Broadway (I'm guessing to $9.) Remember, LDB will refund whatever you don't like so it's worth a try. I'd stay away from the discounted Italian wines. Past history tells me that if the price looks too good to be true, it is. Even worse, wines from the Eastern block.

No, It's an LDB store and a nice one with an interesting selection. It's in MiddleGate (or HighGate?) Shopping Center off of Kingsway. I'm sure that by now they're in full swing now that the paperwork has reached the boonies! The selection always varies from store to store with some places having tons of stuff and others hardly anything.

I just returned from Edmonton where I did all the wine and spirits shopping I need to do for the next while at the Costco, Sobey's and Superstore Liquor Stores. Their special prices are year round. I bought the Tommasi 2001 Amarone which sells for $60. here for $40. and the Il Grigio -San Felice Riserva Chianti for $25. vs. $32 here.I finished with a bottle of my favourite everyday bourbon - Maker's Mark which was $36. vs $49. here. Although way too rich for my blood the current Chateau Mouton Rothschild which sells here for between $575 - $650. was selling for somewhere around $370! And don't get me started on the scotch prices!

Head down to Cook's store in City Square (Cambie and 12th.) They're having a big sale on a lot of things around the store.

Things will be continually marked down throughout the week till the end of February.

Got myself a book, a whisk, a few zester planers for birthdays, some great heavy duty magnets to hang up my knives....

They've got a Peugot salt grinder for $25, a Professional 600 KA for $500 and lots of other goodies I'd like to have...sigh....

Meinhardt is having a huge sale:

http://www.meinhardt.com/qs/page/5495/0/37

I went to the sale and had to hold myself back from buying too much. I tried what I thought was the best tuna sandwich I've ever had. It tasted like they used some sort of spicy Thai mayo in the sandwich.

Got some pasta, jam, chocolate, spices and even a fondue for two set (which I'm sure was a leftover from Valentines.)

Thanks for the heads up on the sale.

Was picking up another 2 bottles of the Colavita, and the (new) cashier says, "a lot of people have been buying this oil today". Cute. We chatted, and decided that the store is a great place to work and learn about food at the same time.

Totally loving my StoneRidge crackerse
