Moxie

Recommended Posts

Stopped into Moxie tonight to check it out. It was a fairly slow night, maybe 5 tables filled and about 4-5 folks at the bar. Lots of yummy sounding stuff on the menu. The beer selection could be better/more varied, and I only briefly glanced over the wine selection, so can't really comment on that. Had the crab melt. Yum, good comfort food. Came with sweet potato fries. If you are a sweet potato lover, you might like these ones, as they actually taste like sweet potatoes. The crab melt isn't very crabby tasting, but it is good, with melted cheese and sliced cornichons and a wonderfully toasted bun. All washed down with a Stella Artois.

BUT here's the best part: they have happy hour 4:30 to 6 and again at 11pm to midnight. Lots of half price goodies, the crab melt, the lamburger, the spicy shrimp cakes... Definitely a great reason to return, and a new happy hour joint for us!

I'll be back, for sure.

Actually, happy hour is 4-5:30- not what I said above.

Ate at Moxie again tonight since I was feeling sorry for myself because I had to work OT on saturday + I was doing homework ALL DAY today.

Had the lamburger. Wowie, this is quite possibly.. well yes it is, the BEST burger I've encountered in quite some time. Served medium rare, with a feta-pink peppercorn-olive-tapenade with lemon aioli, on what I deem a perfect bun (one that doesn't interfere with burger enjoyment) I drooled over every bite of this. The waiter was kind enough to bring me the more-special-than-plain sweet potato frites, but in actuality, I would have preferred the regulars. While I think these are a fine representation of sweet potato frites, I'm just not a huge sweet potato fan, and really was craving a good ole pommes frites experience alongside my perfect burger. Combined with a unexpectantly good Argentinian Malbec, this was a fine repast.

Being a glutton for punishment, ...ok I'm just a glutton, I had to try the "half baked" chocolate cake. It hit the nail on the head as far as chocolate-I-love, which is dense, moist, and tasting very reminiscent of Thomas Haas' chocolate sparkle cookies and/or the chocolat chaud at Le Pichet.

What a fine meal. And, during happy hour that fabulous burger is only $6. Can't be beat.

I went there last week and had a very good meal. Started with the wild mushroom mac and cheese. Very rich, but very worth it. My main was the cod dish. Not as memorable as the mac and cheese. It was good, but not anything groundbreaking. The service was great.

Moxie makes for a nice addition to the neighborhood. I like all the new places with weeknight-don't-want-to-cook-drop-in-friendly prices doing good food in the Lower QA neighborhood. Crow seems to have started this trend. And $20 for a goat cheese salad and 3 mini lamb burgers is quite the deal at Veil.

Dayne and I had dinner at Moxie last night and really enjoyed our meal and the service.

We started with a kir and a sidecar, both ok but nothing to write home about (and they use the same Crate & Barrel glasses that we use for parties).

Then we shared the leek tart for a starter. Seriously the most creamy and flavorful I've had. The tart crust was excellent and I just couldn't get over how creamy this was. Served with a little salad that had some truffle vinaigrette.

I had the pork loin with sweet onion bread pudding, it was incredibly juicy and tasty- the crust having something like star anise or 5 spice??

Dayne had the lamb burger which he really liked also. REgular fries came with which he thought were excellent!

We also tried the half baked chocolate cake for dessert and both agreed that the pistacio bits on top got in the way.

One glass of wine each with dinner, our tab was $90.

The only thing I might say was that the space seems a bit cold. Bare concrete floor coupled with bare long bench and wood tables. It was a bit drafty but I hate to be cold so am sensitive to that.

Our server was excellent and very upfront about what she thought of different dishes. When she checked on us she asked questions like, how is the temperature, how is the seasoning? I like that.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yet again I surface out of the homework pool (and the pool created by all the rain) to hit Moxie's happy hour.

Had the clams with chorizo in a beer-scallion broth. These totally kicked ass. Really tasty. Tiny clams, lots and lots of them, in a large bowl with just the right amount of broth and lots of chorizo, enough to have some in every bite with a few leftover bites to spare. This came with some crusty bread for dipping but of course, I had to order a side of frites to go with

My only nitpick would be that a few of the clam shells were broken, so that made for some careful eating and a few crunchy bites. But all in all I'll forgive them that, becauce once a shell breaks, it would cost them some major time to sieve out the shell pieces from the broth and meanwhile my clams would be getting cold!

Repeated that glass of Argentinian malbec, which still rocks. The frites are great too! Man.. Brouwer's could take a page from these guys on the frites front.
