My local Sobey's was my only source for the 2.5 kg bag of Robin Hood blending flour, but they dropped it or else sold out.

Does anyone know another source, or a substitute for thickening sauces, at low cost?

Sobeys still carries it in the shaker can (at least they did yesterday when I was there)

Easy blend flour

Practice. Do it over. Get it right.

Mostly, I want people to be as happy eating my food as I am cooking it.

Thanks for the link, I've e-mailed Robin Hood to see what they can come up with; meantime the cannister will suffce.

Have heard good things about Wondra, Kerry, but never tried it.

I think it's the same stuff essentially.

Does anyone know where I can find prepared Thai curry pastes such as May Ploy brand in Toronto?

"Flay your Suffolk bought-this-morning sole with organic hand-cracked pepper and blasted salt. Thrill each side for four minutes at torchmark haut. Interrogate a lemon. Embarrass any tough roots from the samphire. Then bamboozle till it's al dente with that certain je ne sais quoi."

the larger supermarkets on Spadina in Chinatown will have them. I tend to buy the little tins, not sure of the brand. The larger plastic containers (different brand) are there too. I suspect you'd also find them in the larger stores in the other GTA Chinatowns as well. I think House of Spice in Kensington also carries them. I suspect many of the better large chain grocery stores (Loblaws etc.) will also carry them.

There is also a Thai grocer in a strip mall off Weston Rd. in the Sheppard/ Finch area called Ventiane, if memory serves. My one trip there didn't turn up too much in the way of canned stuff that you couldn't find in Chinatown, but for more esoteric herbs, that'd be the first place I'd look.

Good luck,

Geoff Ruby

Thanks Geoff. I had not considered Spadina Chinatown as a source.

Vanilla beans for baking etc?

I know William Sonoma carries Madagascar vanilla beans, but so expensive (2 for $12.50). Right now I use it with a mix of another vanilla bean I get from Micheal Angelos (Select, Tosca). Have to admit the madagascar has a deeper darker taste.

Based on Cali's post, I entered an eBay auction of 15 Mexican beans (madagascar genus) and won it, for about U.S.$10. with shipping. They should be here in a day or two.

can someone tell me where to find duck in ontario, specifically, duck legs, duck breast(preferabbly magret), and duck fat.

Thanks

I have found duck legs and duck breasts at Longo's. Not magret though.

Edited to add - and of course, at the St. Lawrence Market where I know you can also get duck fat.

There's a poultry shop in Kensington that has lots of duck.

SLM, any butcher, Whitehouse for duck fat and magret.

Pusateris

Oriental markets for whole duck or legs (T&T, etc)

It's very prevalent in Toronto and the GTA, is there somewhere in particular in Ontario you are looking???? (It's a big place, lol)

I either go to Whitehouse for breasts/confit or The Healthy Butcher for breasts.

My weekend food flyers have  new season Pacific Halibut steaks at Sobey's for  $10/lb.

These were great last year, and the season lasted until June.

I saw that too, I think I'll make a run to Grand Bend to pick some up. I see some fish taco's on my menu.

Indeed it is a brand name. They are whole wheat crackers with sesame seeds, armenian flat bread. Really tasty (and 5 for one weight watchers point). Very tasty. I know I used to find them everywhere, now I just can't seem to find them.

A friend of a friend is getting married and wishes to find good old fashioned tasty petit fours.  Anyone seen them in Southern Ontario?

Dufflet's has a petit fours collection (scroll down to near the bottom). Way back in the '80s, I loved their stuff, but it has been many years since I was last able to try some, so I don't know if they're still any good.

(Is toronto considered Southern Ontario?)

Eitelbach also makes them. I have bought them at Pusateri's and whole foods.

duck fat (and lard) can both be gotten at the healthy butcher on queen

toronto is indeed part of southern ontario.

arguably so is everything this side of sudbury (at least according to the highway traffic act, but they only divide south from north)

I would suggest trying SLM first off, otherwise call Cumbrae.
