Yeah! Ocelli butter purchased today at Schefflers.

VERY expensive by world standards, but if you break it down to cost/serving then worth the extra to have it just by itself on a warm crusty gread.

$5.99 for 125 gm or $9.99 for 250 gm (about double price I paid in UK (at Waitrose).

Treat yourself. You deserve it.

Oops. Hadn't tried it when I posted - my comments were based on previous samples.

Just used the Ocelli butter I purchased at Schefflers and it's rancid!!!!!

The expiry date is 31.03.06 so avoid this batch!

There is a good halibut sale at Sobey's, starting today.

They have Pacific halibut, $8/lb. steaks, $11/lb. fillet, cut from 30 lb. fish, delivered today (Sat.) and next Tuesday. Not bad for a supermarket fish counter.

The sobey's ad we get only shows the steaks for 7.99lb. I wish they had the fillets, I like those so much better. How will you prepare yours?

Hi, Randi,

The ad I saw yesterday showed steaks only, but the fillets were on display too. My Sobey's, in Pickering, is big enough to have a fish specialist, and she prepares the display, so the fillets are available as long as the supply lasts. I wouldn't expect as much in Exeter, but then you have fresh items from Lake Huron such as pickerel and smelt that I can't get from Lake Ont.

I'll prepare mine by placing each over cooked rice and topped with mornay, then shrink-wrapped for sous vide boil-in-bag. This is good for me because I'll have a ready lunch bag for a day or two.

Sobey's in Oakville only advertised steaks but I was up there today and they had fillets in the display case (unpriced).

I've never tried City Fish's smoked salmon. My favourite is from Kristapsons, where it's all smoked salmon, all the time.

Yah, my family has always bought smoked salmon from Kristapsons...Let me say, that the SS from City Fish blows it out of the water!  Dont believe me?  Try it for yourself =)

I wish I'd read this over the weekend, I was at LY (picked up some tomatos, almost passed them by until a little old Italian lady stopped me and told me to buy some!)

I'll definitely try the smoked salmon, we've been buying from Kristapsons for years, and I'm off it lately. It's still okay, but sliced very thick and it just doesn't taste the same to me. I guess another trip over to the LY plaza is in order. I love the columbian bakery in the same plaza as well.

If you see the owner there, shorter italian guy with glasses (great description, I know) tell em that Justin sent you...if its him, he may give you a few free tastes :)

Also, if you havent, tried their selection of fresh clams...if you like clams that is. If you are really lucky, they may even have some fresh Langostines in!

PS - One of the reasons I love their SS so much is unlike kristapsons its thinly sliced and at a fair price.

Thanks for that. I don't know the owners name either, but he has ALWAYS been extremely helpful. I love their clams, and I've had lagoustines from them as well. Unfortunately, both are fairly infrequent as my other half is allergic to shellfish. Try their fresh sardines - they're great grilled and in a pinch I've used their frozen product - also good. Honestly, I've never had a bad or even mediocre product from City Fish, always top quality combined with excellent service. I like Diana's for my oysters though, selection wise.

I'm surpised that many of us expect smoked salmon to sold thinly sliced. We all have a salmon slicer or ham slicing knife in the kit, and can ask for a chunk of SS if they offer the usual machine sliced or too-thick hand-sliced product.

Yes, and I do slice my own. However, when it is requested either thinly sliced, or in a chunk and is not delivered as such it can by a minor annoyance. My other half has prohibited me from bringing my knife kit EVERYWHERE we go

Since City Fish was brought up, here is something I don't understand.  I haven't been in for a while, but I remember being able to get wild salmon any time of year.  But the season for wild salmon is May to September.  Could it be a species called wild salmon that they are referring to?

There is more than one ocean/region to get wild salmon from, I believe. Regardless, City Fish supplies some of the best restaurants in the city, they couldnt afford to mislead people.

Also, regarding the slicing issue, I believe it comes pre-packaged pre-THINLY sliced...so thats really not an issue...

Just finished off the last bit of the 1LB package i bought last week for breakfast...mmm mmmm goooood

In other threads two cleaning products have been recommended: Dawn Power Dissolver (a de-greaser) and Carbon-Off for cleaning up sheet pans. Has anyone seen these in the GTA? Thanks.

Anna,

I got carbon-off at Hamilton Store Fixtures, which is on King west of Bay street a couple of years ago. I didn't find it worked all that well however. If you want my can to try e-mail me and I'll drop it by. I'm in Burlington.

I'm also interested in the Dawn power dissolver, get those range hood filters clean once and for all.

I have looked everytime I'm out for Dawn power disolver as well and would love to know where to find this.

Practice. Do it over. Get it right.

Mostly, I want people to be as happy eating my food as I am cooking it.

How kind of you to offer! However, if you were not impressed then I certainly wouldn't ask you to go to such trouble. BUT how great to find another member so close to Oakville!

I'm even more obnoxious than a kit carrier: I bring along a DMT pocket diamond stone in case I encounter dull knives in someone's kitchen. They are usually grateful to get a good edge...

Hee, hee. Glad to know I'm not the only oddity....you should see what I travel with when we go away to visit for a weekend!!

Do you like your stone? Where did you purchase? What type of knives do you use?

I have a DMT pocket folding stone (it folds up like a Leatherman) and a DMT steel, both from Lee Valley. Most of my knives came from the same same place, when they had a one time sale of old Sabatier carbon steel. The ham and salmon slicers date back to 1920. I have one 7" laminated Japanese knife, and I'll be looking for two or three larger ones, although they are too fragile for a diamond stone.

The DMT stones and steels are aggressive and quick. I like them, but they have to be used carefully.

Hi all, I'm in search of a few key ingredients. Information as to how I might obtain any (or all!) of these, would be soooooo very much appreciated.

Kobe/wagyu beef. Does anyone know of a butcher that carries it FOR CERTAIN?

Toro tuna. Not sushi-grade, or sashimi-grade, but real toro. I don't care how much it costs. Clearly the city's top chefs are getting it from somewhere, damnit!

Heirloom tomatoes anywhere at this time of year that you've seen?

I have to drive in to the city from about 90 minutes away, so I'd like to be 100% certain that the product will be there when I arrive. I will most certainly make the special trip for any of the above, so if you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks very much in advance!

Heirloom tomatos are also available at the Cheese Boutique if you're in the west end.
