I haven't checked lately, but Hong Kong Supermarket (Pike St. between East Broadway and Madison St.) is my Manhattan standby for all that kind of stuff. In Flushing, go to A&C (Kissena Blvd. just across from the Flushing branch of the Queens Public Library).

Just got a great sichuan cookbook.. Looking for peppercorns and fermentated beans... Someone tell me the best market to get all the supplies..

Which cookbook, pray tell?

"Under the dusty almond trees, ... stalls were set up which sold banana liquor, rolls, blood puddings, chopped fried meat, meat pies, sausage, yucca breads, crullers, buns, corn breads, puff pastes, longanizas, tripes, coconut nougats, rum toddies, along with all sorts of trifles, gewgaws, trinkets, and knickknacks, and cockfights and lottery tickets."

Thanks! That's cool, b/c it was pretty evident from your post that it was a new cookbook for you. It's a good first step to be excited enough by a book to want to cook many dishes from it. Have fun trying it out.
