Sometime back, there was a nice list in Saveur or CI for neccessary pantry staples for quick meals. My husband and I are going to shop for these today. Anyone wanna refresh our babd memories on some good neccessities for quick meals staples other than pasta, canned beans and tomato sauce?

I don't know what's in the Saveur list, but here are some of my pantry staples minus the pasta and beans:

Vinegars: white wine, red wine, apple cider, balsamic, rice wine/Mirin

Oils: several EVOOS, canola, peanut, sesame, hot chile

Other liquid seasonings: worcestershire, soy sauce, clam juice, Thai fish sauce

Rices: arborio or carnaroli, basmati, plain white, plain brown

Assorted dried vegetables (chiles, mushrooms) and fruits (raisins, currants, cranberries, cherries)

Canned tomato products

An ample supply of baking ingredients: sugars, flours, leaveners, flavorings, chocolates

Tuna, anchovies

Canned coconut milk, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk

Assorted pickles, capers, relishes, jams, honeys

That's most of what's currently in my own personal pantry, anyway.

to the above, i would add onions, ginger, garlic

and canned beans of every kind available.

Oh yeah, I always have onions, garlic and ginger laying about.

Other grains are good too. We don't eat that many grains, and I am most fond of rice, pasta and breads, but plenty of people do like other grains and their pantries represent that.

To the above, I would add herbs, dried or frozen. I really like the chopped, frozen parsley and basil I get from Trader Joe's. I also have couscous in my pantry at all times. With some chicken broth (another must in my kitchen), it makes a quick and easy side dish in minutes.

Panko - you can't live without panko. As a matter of fact, if you have panko you don't need anything else.

Don't forget the old favorites:

Old Bay Seasoning

Lawrey’s Seasoned Salt

Mrs. Dash salt-free seasonings

Spike Seasoned Salt

cubed broth (never alone – only to toss in to punch up something else)

Tabasco (or perhaps Prudhomme’s hot sauce or, if you can find it, Tapatio)

Worcestershire sauce

Also:

Chinese Shanxi vinegar (like balsamic but a fraction of the price)

5 Spice Powder
