A brand new website: Gastronomic Meditations

Looks nice. Thanks for the heads-up, GiftedGourmet.

Thanks so much Gifted Gourmet. It's a beautiful and fascinating website. I've added it to my list of favorites. Written "food porn" is my nickname for this site. It's even got me considering purchasing Brillat-Savarin's The Physiology of Taste.

However, I did notice when I checked out their links that eGullet was not among them. Would it be up to one of our Forum managers to request a link for eGullet?

Take care.

Yet another great site discovered thanks to the dedicated work of GG. Thanks for the link, Melissa, it looks like these people share the philosophy of eG members.

"There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!" Terry Pratchett

I am so pleased that all of you were able to look over this new website and, even more, found that the similarities to what we have here at eGullet were considerable!

Appreciate your feedback .. knew I wasn't crazy in loving this!

Oh my!

Thanks so much to all of you for your enthusiasm and feedback. It has been such a pleasure for us to get this magazine going, and it is so gratifying to see that our work is being appreciated.

Melissa, thanks especially to you for introducing the gastronomes here at eGullet to Gastronomic Meditations. We've just launched our July issue, along with our new discussion forums, so this should prove to be quite an adventure!

Since my Executive Chef is as manic about the aesthetic pleasures of food as I am (and as you all seem to be), I have encouraged her to join me here so we can share in the delights of the palate with the rest of you.

I'm really looking forward to it. :)

Thank you!

May I just say that the lavender syrup is an ethereal experience that must not be missed. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I literally wanted to bathe in it -- its heady appeal is beyond words.

Hi Jennifer! Welcome to the eG Society! I'll piggyback on the previous posts to say that your site is just achingly beautiful. Thanks so much for starting it! I added it to my Favorites immediately.

Genny, thank you for such a wonderful welcome. I must say that after a couple of days here, I feel like I'm gathered around my kitchen table with all of you. eGullet is fantastic!

I'm so grateful for your reaction to Gastronomic Meditations, too. I've spent more than a decade in the industry trying to figure out where I wanted to plant my feet, and with this project, I really feel like I've found that place at last.

I am proud to be a good cook, but I leave that endeavor to the chefs, as I prefer to step into professional kitchens on an at-will basis (more for learning and the adrenaline rush). I've now had the incredible fortune to work with the best of the best (last gig was running the Ecole des Chefs program for Relais & Chateaux), and they have inspired me to pursue the piece that makes me happiest -- studying and talking about the food, and the sensual experiences such a course of study offers. I was tired of seeing food and chefs "dumbed down" (I see many souls here feel the same way), so this is a chance for me to let my inner nerd do the talking. I'm amazed and encouraged by the way people are responding to our message.

Incidentally, my Executive Chef at GM was one of my first clients at L'Ecole des Chefs. She used to be a lawyer, and now we spent our time gushing about flavor platforms and aromatics.

Does life get any better?

Warmest regards,

Jennifer

Heh...I almost went to law school, too.

Funny thing, that. Most of my clients at Ecole were doctors, lawyers, or some other high-intensity profession. There is a corollary there...

Me too, doc.

Fellow gastronomes have always provided me with a soulful gratification I can't get anywhere else, and I think it has a lot to do with that intensity. I had one client who would call me to talk for hours about tomatoes -- LOVED it!!!

Thank you! Apologies for the delayed reply -- I've been ensconced in Harry Potter all weekend.

I wanted to publicly thank the members here who have so warmly embraced our mission, so eGullet is the topic of my Daily Meditation for today.

Thanks so much to all of you! I really am enjoying my participation here, and am grateful for the constant source of inspiration eGullet provides for my food thoughts.

  • 3 weeks later...

FYI, our new issue went live today.

We have immersed ourselves in the splendid aromas of basil and tomahhhtoes. Oh, and our wine writer did a fabulous take on The Divine Comedy. Love that.
