MIX - Las Vegas

I am staying at Wynn in late July. I have reservations at Bartolotta and Alex at Wynn and the last evening I have a reservation at MIX but I am having second thoughts. Does anyone here on eGullet have a review to share? I have heard some very mixed messages about the food and service and can easily change my reservation to Danial Bouluds Brasserie at the Wynn if warranted.

Anyone? MIX review?

***I've not been to Mix (or Fix) but I have been to the three restaurants you mention at Wynn and, having eaten at Daniel Boulud twice in one week I have to say it's a fantastic restaurant.

I did see numerous people eating hamburgers with great enthusiasm but I stuck to a 3-course dinner menu both evenings...sublime!! Also, if you eat there be sure to get an OUTSIDE table...Yes, it's hot in July but if you eat around 8PM it cools down and the show is worth it!

I have also searched for a decent review of Mix, but couldn't find one. Here is a site (LV Review Journal) that did a little piece on Mix. The menu (probably not updated) is posted.

One thing that the above article does not mention is their tasting menu. I called Mix, and they told me that they offer a 5-course tasting of their "best dishes" for $180. I would have to consider shelling out 180 bucks for five courses.

I have yet to dine at Alex (I will be next week!), but I am sure that he will impress. I knew him for a few years when he ran Renoir, at the Mirage- it was my favorite restaurant. I hope some of the staff made the move from Renoir to Alex...lots of nice people working there.

In my opinion, the 5 course tasting may be a bit overpriced at $180. There's no denying the room and view are fabulous, and the food is very good, but I think there are several better choices in Vegas at the high end. For example, I thought Picasso was wonderful and was actually substantially less expensive. I also thought Shibuya in MGM Grand was more interesting, though of course the cooking style is Japanese fusion rather than straight French.

Nice to talk to one of the guys responsible for the many fabulous Bellagio pastries that I have enjoyed!

I very much doubt that I will be dining at Mix, at least during this trip. Alex Stratta has never failed to take my breath away- the food, service, and ambience were all wonderful at Renoir. I hope for more of the same at Alex.

Picasso is another one of my favorites. The seared scallop with potatoes mousseline and veal jus- one of my fav. dishes! (Even though ONE scallop is a bit stingy... :hmmm: )

Just back from LV and although we didn't eat at MIX we did go up for a drink before our show at Mandalay Bay. It is spectacular. The views and the layout of the bar are awesome, the dining room is just gorgeous, there is a beautiful private dining room as well as a terrace for al fresco dining 64 floors up, eek!!!

I guess with the notable exception of the dishes they mention in the newspaper article, if it is in any way like the MIX in New York, which went through many incarnations before closing down for good, I would say that it does not resemble at all Alain Ducasse's dishes served in any of his high-end restaurants in Paris, Monte Carlo or New York.

That is not to say that the food is not good. It's just not what I would call "Haute Cuisine". When I ate at MIX in NY, I enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon and the Mac Cheese. If the place is more or less the same, I'd be curious to see why MIX in LV would succeed when it failed so miserably in NY. I am curious is it's because of the introduction of these dishes that it does well. Or perhaps is it because LV is always so packed with people, and MIX is in such a high profile place, that it "can't fail"...

Actually, I think that the LV Mix is intended to be more high-end while the NY version was a bit more casual. Certainly the prices are very high-end :hmmm: . When I went we had several dishes with lots of black truffles and other luxury ingredients. The only other Ducasse place I've been to personally is Spoon in Paris, so I can't compare directly, though I noticed a few dishes from Spoon on the Mix menu.

Does Spoon also serve Ducasse's classic dishes? Are they good? Well maybe I should not expect them to be as good as dishes at his 3-michelin star restaurants. So, if someone visits Mix or Spoon, in general, do you recommend him/her to order Ducasse's non-classic dishes, meaning just order whatever specialties that the restaurants' offer? I agree that in any of Ducasse's places nothing comes cheap.

I might visit Mix (at least the lounge if not both) when I'm going to Vegas. At least the place's decoration looks amazing, that what really attracts me so far. Another thing, how's the quality of champagne/wines/port served there? Any wine-pairing served with Chef's tasting menu?

I actually had a chance to have dinner at Mix in Las Vegas last Monday. Here is my short review:

Mix Lounge - Everything here is in black. The lounge is very nice, unfortunately they did not turn the light on every table; otherwise it would be very cool. The view is really breathtaking, the sofa seat in the outside is great, moreover they have some heater as well. The lounge's restroom even had a great view.

Mix Restaurant - Unlike the lounge, everything is in white here. The atmosphere is quite informal and relaxing. The food actually exceeded my expectation despite the fact that chef Bruno was not there. The wine chosen by my servant of the night is very decent; I don't think they have a particular sommelier - at least not when I ate there. Overally, it's still below ADNY, yet it's still very excellent place to dine. Food wise, I would say it's as good as/if not better for some of them than Renoir (now Alex).

I was informed by my server that there is a five-course tasting menu at Mix for $95. Apparently, other guests have brought this issue to the management’s attention. I was told that casino corporation is centralizing their reservation process and as a result, the reservationists do not have the needed information from the restaurant to answer guests’ questions accurately.
