Road Trip: Numero 4

Recommended Posts

Daniel, great travelogue as always!

I'm curious. You post about NOLA, then say you're probably going to hit Memphis, and your next post is about a restaurant in Virginia...

Did you somehow get from Louisiana to Tennessee to Virginia without driving through Kentucky?

Uh-huh: just as I thought. Stereotyping.

With the storm rapidly approaching our first instinct was to head north.. The original plan was to go from New Orleans to Natchez.. But instead, we decided to take the east coast up...

We should have an award of some kind.

Fantastic trip, Daniel! I loved being in the back seat the whole way... hell, we all were!

There is something extra added when I read your menu then see the pic. I have a much better sense of all those states thanks to your wonderful road trip here. I read and hear much about southern cooking but today I have a really comprehensive look at the roadside culture there, and beyond.

That shrimp in a hollow baguette has gotten me into the freezer for a some maine shrimp I froze back in march. Oh, yeah, I can taste it already!

I have to find some okra too. and... and some fried chicken.... and BBQ... damn! Thanks again!

Daniel, loved your account of this trip too - thanks so much for taking the time to post. The photos make me drool, especially the shrimp sandwich!!! I think a road trip will have to be in my future, it's been awhile.

Its all about that hollow shrimp sandwich.. I made a bbq shrimp sandwich using a recipe provided by dave the cook.. It wasnt the same but great in its own way.. If you wanted to get the Liuzza's version I would use gravy instead worcestershire sauce... bbq shrimp recipe

Thanks as always for the kind words brudda..

DAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNG! Day 11 is killing me with its goodness. Already said it once before, but Daniel, this is super-impressive. You're so lucky to have seen so much.

Thank you P,

I also think I am really lucky to have made the time for these trips.. As well as having someone so great to share it with..

Just wanted to add my thanks and praise too, Daniel.

It's been a good while since my last drive-and-graze roadtrip. Need to fix that sometime soon ... (you sure you don't want to go into the culinary tourguide business? I bet you'd have a lot of customers. )

Thanks for the nice posts, you're the king of the road, got a trailer for sale or rent?

Off topic, but your pictures from Las Cruces make me have to tell this story of PC run amok. Las Cruces city officals have been sued in Federal court. The suit requests the removal of three crosses from the Las Cruces city logo.

"The crosses serve no governmental purpose other than to disenfranchise and discredit non-Christian citizens," said the lawsuit filed by Paul F. Weinbaum, who lives in the Las Cruces area, and Martin J. Boyd of Las Cruces.

Get out your Spanish/English dictionary. Las Cruces is spanish for "the crosses!"

If you go south on route 1 past dixie bones about 1/2 mile is a mexican restaurant that has some great food. You can point if you spanish isn't up to par. It just trying to figure out when they call your number.

I found Dixie Bones on the way down to NC once. Nice find for road food.

Another great travel log thanks!

Dano!

I finally finished reading this post and I must say you did an awesome job!

I thought I would mention that I’m friends with Dan and his lovely Co-pilot. I also have the honor of speaking to them during most of these trips. It’s funny when Dan mentions something about food or people that make no sense. However, when I read his stories and see these pics, it really brings his adventures full circle. Dan you’re the man, thanks for the great ride.

P.S. – No Oysters in N.O.? ACME?? Or that other place?

P.S.S – I think your bronchitis was caused by those fire ants.

DAY 11:

We woke up a couple hours outside of Woodbridge Va. Home of Dixie Bones BBQ.. With the Sunday AYCE Brunch Special.. Oh baby..

Dixie Bones BBQ

13440 Occoquan Road

Woodbridge,VA

Friendly looking place.. Lots of families eating after Church most likely

Thanks Daniel for the great review (and BBQ Porn) of a place not too far from where I live. I'll have to check it out. However, ......................

We drove for awhile and came to Washington D.C.. At this point traffic on 95 all the way to Manhattan was jammed.. We were hoping to get home at a reasonable hour..  Now I went to college just outside of D.C and spent many days and nights exploring D.C..

Daniel

No fair rolling through my hometown and not stopping by to say hello! :raz: Really, though, as everyone else here has said thanks for taking us along on your journeys. With everything going on in NOLA and other parts South, this roadtrip has been very special indeed.

Inside me there is a thin woman screaming to get out, but I can usually keep the Bitch quiet: with CHOCOLATE!!!

I must say, Steven has been a huge help on these trips.. We call him Steve-Star.. Our mobile concierge.. I will call him at like 2 am and be in the middle of Tennesse and ask him for a name of a burger place.. Or a place in D.C that has Chili in the name, or the place in Pittsburg that sounds like pizzaioli.. And he is quick on the Price-Line hotel reservations too.. Thank you for your help Steve-O..

Not into N.O Acme... Too popular.. If a place is famous for serving raw oysters, there has to be a lot of hype involved..

And definately.. Those damn fire ants definately fired up the bronchitis.. Like Henry HIll in Goodfellas, "I am legitamately bronchial"

Thanks again Steven..

Thanks for reading Diva.. I would definately tell you to go to Dixie Bones for the Sunday AYCE.. Great deal.. I still feel really lucky to have been to N.O so recently.. But more importantly, I am really lucky to have been able to leave when I did. We were really so close to being stranded..

Anyway, I didnt know where to post this.. But I didnt want to seem like a liar.. I have been in a lot of pain for the last 6 weeks.. With my ear drum bursting twice in that time period.. I have had a really painful infection and have been ordered not to fly by several ENT'S.. (I couldnt even get one shady one to say it would be ok  ) So needless to say, I have postponed my China Trip and had to cancel my arrangements.. Luckily only losing 100 bucks in cancelling the flight.. Also missed two trips to Chicago in this period.. Hopefully, I will be well and posting my trip before the end of the y-EAR...

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Daniel. Hope you feel better soon. I'm sure I can speak for any number of us when I say we'll all be happy to read about, and live vicariously through, your travels when you are well enough to continue. Best wishes.
