Restaurants Near Plymout

Recommended Posts

The only ones I know of, never eaten there, are The Carved Angel in Dartmouth Harbour http://www.theaa.com/restaurants/5160.html and The Horn of Plenty in Gulworthy http://www.information-britain.co.uk/showP...cfm?Place_ID=50. Both are landmark restaurants of the 60's and 70's, now owned by chef Peter Gorton. I think they are Michelin listed but whether they have stars or not I don't know.

At Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, Chez Nous is a superb little one star restaurant.  I can't imagine why this great chef stays in Plymouth - he says he is happy there.  I am from Plymouth and I detest the place :-)

An excellent fish restaurant is Piermasters, on the Barbican.

The China Garden, Derry's Cross used to be nationally famous, but that is in the past.

Thought I would bring this thread to the surface again.

I will be spending a week in Torquay and really appreciate any additional restaurant thoughts. I will have a rent car and be willing to drive a decent distance for an interesting restaurant or destination.

Have a great time NewYorkTexan. Devon is an excellent county in terms of its produce, and there are some very good restaurants. My favourites (all mentioned on previous egullet threads, so you could run a search) are the Nobody Inn, Lewtrenchard Manor, Number 22 Mill Street in Chagford and Gidleigh Park (in order of ascending prices). It had never occurred to me before, but all happen to be on or by Dartmoor, which is a great place to visit in itself, and easily accessible from Torquay. I hope you come to Exeter for the day (there is another recent thread on food in the city) to see the cathedral; and you might like to combine this with an afternoon in Topsham, where you could buy some cheese from Devon Country Cheeses.

I'm afraid that I know very little about restaurants in Torquay, other than the fact that Pizza Express is in a lovely '20s building, there is a good (but relatively expensive) Iranian restaurant near the marina, and that Babbacombe has a fish and chip shop which is rated as one of the best in the UK. You could also search The Guardian website for eulogies to Torquay from Julie Burchill - it is one of her three or four specialist subjects.

Look forward to hearing about any gems that you uncover.

Hi

We go to devon once or twice a year but dont often get to eat out as we visit family

When we have i have found some of the pubs serve good quality food

The Ship in Ughborough etc

Last time we went we did visit a little restaurant in Callington, Cornwall

A short drive from the Tamar Bridge

The restaurant is serving hig quality food and very low prices

I think 6 courses was £25-30, good local ingredients

Unfortunately the website seems to be down at the mo but you could keep trying.

www.thethymeandplaice.co.uk or search on yahoo
