What I really don't get is the mayo. Do hamburgers and mayo generally go together? Do bacon and mayo generally go together? Do cheese and mayo generally go together?

I'd answer a hearty yes, yes, and yes (well, maybe not just mayo and cheese, but mayo and cheese in the context of a burger, definately).

This must be an East Coast thing.

My poor Midwestern brain just couldn't wrap itself around the idea of a burger with mayo. Even after consuming a Burger King Whopper--which has mayo--in Overland Park as a kid.

Yeh Denny's Beer Barrel pub is a place in PA. Me and my friends have been making obscene burgers for years and we are "fine". This is a picture i think of a 4 or a four and half pounder.. We have gone up to six.. We also put alot more cheese on our guy.

I've always had mayo (or 1000 Island) on my burgers and I was born in California and raised in Washington State. Which is why I don't like cheeseburgers because mayo and cheese don't belong together.

Am I right that the restaurant is in Western Pennsylvania?

How is it that you guys didn't make that WQED program "Sandwiches That You Will Like"?

And how come you aren't posting on the Pennsylvania board? Too Phillycentric?

Okay, gotcha. I'm trying to envision one of these in a 10-inch skillet.

I'm having better luck seeing it on a tabletop grill, although it'd have to be a big one. Or on a broiler pan in the oven.

The restaurant, BTW, is in central Pennsylvania, WNW of State College. IOW, near no one foolhardy enough to try eating a six-pounder in one sitting, except for the occasional lost Penn State student.

Umm..yikes!

Surely the launch of the Monster Thickburger was preceded by market research to suggest that a hungry demographic existed for this sort of thing, and that profits would come initially either from the guaranteed media hype or curiosity of the select few who think a burger like that is a nice treat sometimes. DOn't think it's the sort of thing they will keep on the board forever.

In any and all business decisions taken by a Multinational (regardless of who we're talking about) the primary motivator will be profit. Any "lightening" of their menu, or reduction in fat content, is motivated by profit. Any Social Responsibility is a brand awareness move, and also motivated primarily by profit.

To expect otherwise of them would be futile. To show them there's profit in promoting a healthy lifestyle is more likely to succeed.

Right thats why subway is a load of crap.. Like they care less about people. Like that cigarette commercial Carlton cigarettes does.. "If you smoke, please try carltons." Like they are concerned about your health? The bottom line is subway and carlton care just as much for you as you care about the personal health of their CEOS.

does a burger like this exist at the beer barrel pub? Could be worth a trip to PA to consume that bad boy!

According to Snopes, Denny's Beer Barrel Pub calls their ultra-humongo-monsterburger "Ye Olde 96er" (after the weight of the raw patty in ounces).

They have a couple of more reasonably sized monsterburgers as well: the little ones weigh in at two and three pounds respectively.

However: I wonder if the restaurant is having a change of heart? The link from the Snopes.com item on the burger to the page on the restaurant's web site describing it no longer works. You may want to phone or e-mail them (info for both on the restaurant's web site).

About a year and a half ago, Hardee's revamped itself. Its menu was too confused—offering fried chicken, roast beef, and hot dogs—and it needed a fresh new image. So it simplified and focused on two things that seem to go great together: Excessively large hamburgers and 18- to 34-year-old males.

I thought this was a good article, though unlike Seth Stevenson I live in a Hardee's saturated market and I haven't seen these ads either. I wonder if they are just being circulated online as a form of gorilla buzz marketing?

Secondly, the food/porn line can be a fine one (see Like Water for Chocolate for a good 2 hour example). I know Jan and Michael Stern have written on both subjects, and every time I read about how lucious some foodstuff is in a review, or silky some dessert is, my mind begins to wonder.
