Cant wait to see the 4 layer cake you are making.. What an inspirational idea..

Here's an ugly slice of the cake...I swear I spread the buttercream more evenly on the slices I gave away for the taste test!

Valrhona Manjari caramel ganache

1st layer, Bensdorp cocoa

2nd layer, Bernard Callebaut

3rd layer, organic cocoa

4th layer, Valrhona cocoa

IMBC (caramel) in between the layers

For the record, the Valrhona cocoa won out.

Hello!

I've been a lurker for quite a while. I must have gained 20 lbs. just looking at Daniel's dinners, Ling's deserts and Percy's breakfasts (the duck sausage  ).

Anyway, I just had the most amazing pancakes I have ever had in my life (and I'm not exactly young!) and wanted to share.

A friend of ours gave my wife the Gourmet Magazine Cookbook and in it is Ricotta Hotcakes with Honeycomb Butter!! (insert drool emote here)

I'm having them again tomorrow!

My camera takes terrible pics though sorry, its been bounced by the children one too many times.

Hey Mike,

Welcome.. Those hotcakes sound awesome.. I am having a couple people over today and was looking through Cooks Book when I saw this breakfast.. I am not a fan of breakfast but had to make this...

Started with a layer of spinach cooked in garlic with red peppers.. Then layered sliced mortadella, and spicy sopressatta.. Then put a layer of fresh mozz and cracked a bunch of eggs on top..

gallery_15057_1168_474248.jpg

Covered with white pepper and salt, threw it in a 450 oven for 15 minutes...

gallery_15057_1168_301533.jpg

Served with fresh squeezed OJ, black coffee and hot bread..

gallery_15057_1168_1298722.jpg

While it was baking the oil from the meats rose up and covered the eggs and was like frying the eggs and flavoring everything.. I am not a breakfast person and would eat this for dinner..

Were the peppers grilled or raw when you put them in?

Daniel, that dish looks amazing...I think I know what I'm cooking for the fam on Thanksgiving morning. Yum.

Breakfast this morning for me was a big ol' cup of coffee and two slices of the lemon loaf handed to me as I left Danube last night after a lovely dinner. It tasted kind of like lemon pound cake, but much lighter, and the lemony flavor was very intense.

well, it's johnnybird's birthday today so, besides letting him sleep in, i'm making him blueberry pancakes for breakfast. let the dough sit a bit, toss the previously frozen blueberries with some toast dope and add them to the pancakes. there's turkey bacon to microwave and real maple syrup. his cup of earl grey is brewed and i'm on my second cup of hot cocoa with 2 tsp of orange cappaccino instant coffee(essensia brand - albertsons/acme home brand).

upppp.... got to go - sounds like the birthday boy is up and stirring

oh, ling- what a way to go girl

Nothing.  Do not quote me on this.

THANK YOU, Yetty, I thought it was just me...:biggrin:

Daniel, do you ever get out of the kitchen? Your dinners look stunning and all, but it's after looking at this breakfast that I really felt like joining the crowd begging to be your girlfriend or at least dinner guest . GREAT job!

percyn: Nothing like a fat, glistening sausage to start off your day, huh?:wub:

I had curried beef brisket. It's supposed to be for dinner tonight, but I'm out of brownies. The requisite chocolate portion of my breakfast will be in the form of a chilli-infused Dagoba bar (74%..nice and dark). And maybe a bit of the E. Guittard bar I have in my pantry--I bought it for baking, but it's nice to nibble on a wedge too.

Yesterday we had scrapple (found some in the frozen section at Publix... pretty much all this did was make me hungry for the real thing, fresh, from up north), bacon, malanga (taro root) fritters, over easy eggs, and the usual cheap bubbly.

Life is short; eat the cheese course first.

Scrapple is a sausage made from "scraps" of pork product, blended with cornmeal and spices. If you don't think about what its made of it's pretty enjoyable stuff. It's well known and loved in the Mid Atlantic states, especially in Philadelphia, Pa, where I'm from.

This is one of the most well known brands.

Hi, I been lurking for a while now, although I remember posting a recipe for Aloo Paratha a while back.

I think I recall reading this recipe for the ricotta hotcakes with honeycomb butter in one of Bill Granger's cookbooks...and having eaten them at his cafe in Sydney, with that peculiarly translucent quality that Australian sunshine has in the summertime surrounding me (maybe something to do with the Ozone layer being thinner?) I can second the fact that they are indeed AWESOME!

My only problem is getting honeycomb...I have to buy an entire jar of honey every time I want some, as I havent managed to find anywhere that sells honeycomb on its own here (London).

Really drooly pics from everyone...this is a great thread...I am gonna get more breakfast books now, particularly American breakfast books. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Raj

Susan, did Percy come over to poke that hole in the egg?

I am literally LOL. That just struck me so funny.

(There are WAY too many lines here that I am passing over instead of commenting upon.)

That is the brand that Publix had! My favorites are Rapa and Delaware Maid, though.

Two books I have that I like and that are devoted just to breakfasts are:

A Real American Breakfast by Cheryl A. Jamison and Bill Jamison. Almost 300 recipes from very traditional to newer in style. Great background on the different recipes as well as variations. The book covers all different styles of breakfasts; some chapters are:

Egg, Dairy, Pancakes, Waffles, French Toasts; Meats, Seafood, Hashes, Stratas ad other morning Casseroles, Breakfast Sandwiches, Home made Cereals, Fruit, Breads, Morning Cakes and Cobblers, Smoothies and other Breakfast Drinks.

Good Mornings by Michael McLaughlin. Lots of innovative recipes--sweet and savory. This includes a lot of interesting recipes with a SouthWestern flare.

"Under the dusty almond trees, ... stalls were set up which sold banana liquor, rolls, blood puddings, chopped fried meat, meat pies, sausage, yucca breads, crullers, buns, corn breads, puff pastes, longanizas, tripes, coconut nougats, rum toddies, along with all sorts of trifles, gewgaws, trinkets, and knickknacks, and cockfights and lottery tickets."

-- Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 1962 "Big Mama's Funeral"

I don't know how Eunny made her homemade buttermilk biscuits in about 10 minutes from start to finish, it took me about twice that time.

Why can't I make eggs like Percy & Susan?

But I am proud of my homefries: oniony, buttery goodness with some gloriously crispy potato bits.

Ever heard of healthy oatmeal for breakfast, girl?

Sure, I am not adverse to having an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie or six for breakfast.

(Actually, tomorrow is my day off (from school, but I still gotta work) . Maybe I'll surprise you all and cook a bowl of oatmeal, and post a picture. But don't count on it. )
