Yenching Palace: what can you say about restaurant whose most recent review is from before you were born? Deemed horrendous by many but near my home and dear to my heart. I love the exterior. Great place to go for old school Chinese restaurant cocktails in oddball tiki barware. I liberated one that looked like Danny Glover's character in Enemy Mine. "Private room" features large round table with lazy susan and is perfect venue for birthday parties. The food, eh. Stick to the chicken in garlic sauce. I cannot recommend anything else.

Rip's: Bowie's finest dining spot for many, many years, this motel restaurant/liquor store is like a door in time that takes you back to era when lobster newburg was chichi stuff, Irish Coffee and French dips were ethnic food and when a quarter quiche lorraine was considered light fare. Plus I adore the biscuits, the crab balls are wonderful and the blue cheese dressing is amazing! Chic orange and brown plaid fabrics and race track theme only enhance the atmosphere.

Pied de Cochon: started going a high school hooligan playing hooky and looking for a place to hide out before heading home after "school". Consumed many hangover brunches while living in Georgetown, usually the early bird dinner special that ran from 4-6. And many nights out ended there. RIP

Speaking of dead favorites, a few years back my family tried to make our annual Easter pilgramage to Busch's Chesapeake Seafood Restaurant to find it was gone! Not closed! Gone! They had bulldozed the place and removed every wheel, fishing net and plastic crab. Sad.

Oh yeah - this one is really embarassing - the Anchor Inn at the cross of University and Georgia in Wheaton. This was my parent's default "fancy American" restaurant (meaning lobster newburg and clams casino on the menu) when we were kids. Money was rather tight, and this was a very rare treat.

Trio's Diner, the first restaurant where my kids were regulars. The waiter who writes backwards still works there, God love him, and any place where they don't bat an eye at serving my daughter a milkshake and me a glass of red wine at 11AM (hey, it's Saturday) is OK by me. Also, the subshop, now gone. :sad:

Philadelphia Steak and Pizza on 9th and P Street. Best wings in town. Or, my favorite anyway. Sometimes I have them deliver but I'd just as soon drive down and pick up the order. Something about the bullet-proof glass and the woman on the register -- who always has a smile and often has a daughter doing homework -- makes the wings taste that much better. Credible cheesesteak, too.

as bizarre (?) as it is (particularly the uncouth and invisible service) mixtec still serves up the best mexican in the area.

its at 18th and columbia. incredibly "low brow" (though this is never indictive of quality) but very satisfying and delicious.

its REAL people. there aren't salvadorans serving up food from the country they hate (i know, i work with some) but authentic "cocina mexicana".

Indeed, you are right, but what makes a surprising truth irrational? It's only that to those who don't know.

I would say Pasta Mia before Mixtec, but that's because the latter has these very Seinfeld-esque qualities, like hand-written signs on the door and winding lines out front...

parkway. hell yes. potato pancakes getting cooler and heavier over the years? hmm? can't hear you. sweet waitresses who have known me since birth never around anymore and replaced by super surly man-woman? they're busy! hash browns? yes. nova? yes. pickles? yes. delight sandwich? yes please. with a side of levitra.

vace. i don't want to know from any two amy's. living in seattle, a pizza wasteland, only whips up my lather for vace.

dancing crab - whole lobster please. boiled? cold fries? wet tray? depressing room? see you at 6.

silver spring tastee. scratch that - it's perfectly rational.

i remember the adds for chesapeake bay seafood house..."get all the seeeeeeeeafood you can eat!"

from overheard in new york:

Kid #1: Paper beats rock. BAM! Your rock is blowed up!

Kid #2: "Bam" doesn't blow up, "bam" makes it spicy. Now I got a SPICY ROCK! You can't defeat that!
