Cheap eats in Kauai (south shore)?

My SO has had the very good fortune to land an internship at the National Tropical Botanic Garden on the south shore of Kauai. This is very exciting and a dream come true for her.

The downside of this is that she's not going to be making a whole lot of money. Of course she would love to sample some of the local food. Any suggestions, or links to older threads?

Sorry I can't help you much here as I'm not a Kauai person (and it doesn't look like we have one who currently frequents this board), but there are a couple of links to past threads at the top of this thread. Hope this is at least a little help.

On Kauai, also ate at No. 1 Chinese & BBQ Restaurant, 3160 Kuhio HWY in Lihue.

Very good BBQ plate lunch and very good duck. Oh, also way cheap!

I use to live in Koloa and Poipu and do drive over to the southshore periodically. Poipu and the adjoining coastline has turned into a tourist destination so you won't find "plate lunch" places. If you go into Koloa you'll find two ono (tasty) cheap eats ... Koloa Fish Market and a snack shop along side of Sueoka Store.

There are many other so called local places and I use to frequent Lihue Cafe for lunch before I was placed on a diet. I still cheat and love their roasted pork plate on Wednesdays ... loads of chunk pieces of pork over white rice smothered with brown gravy and fresh green salad with a soy sauce dressing (or macaroni salad). Yeap, high fat and sodium but so ono. Enough food for three normal sized people or one of me . Then there is alway the infamous Hamura Saimin stand in Lihue on Kress Street.

The one time I was over there for a weekender I had the privilege of eating at the "infamous" Hamura's. About four meat sticks and one big bowl of saimin was about right. . .

I'll second Hamura's - zero decor, but cheap and good.

Try Ma's for breakfast in Lihue. Not the cleanest place around, but, again, cheap.

Up in Kapaa, the banana pancakes with coconut syrup at Country Kitchen can't be beat.
