Cooks and Books Visiting Chef Dinners

Recommended Posts

The full schedule for fall events is now on the website.Cooks and Books

The restaurants take the reservations for each dinner. If you'd like to sit at an eGullet table let them know when you make the res. We are also hosting Anne Willan at Kasper's on Oct. 18th. Not only are these fun, but the food has been fabulous. The previous authors including Judy Rodgers, Paula Wolfert and Patricia Wells have all been very pleased. This is also an easy way to do some holiday shopping. The authors will sign books to a giftee. We always bring extra copies and books from the backlist when possible. PM me if you have any questions or we can discuss them on this thread. The date for Thomas Keller is TBA, but the dinner will be held at Union (Thank you, Ethan) and I'll let you know when it's set.

Interesting. Was this event modelled after Philadelphia's Book and the Cook Festival which just celebrated it's 20th Anniversary?

I just made reservations for Andrea Immer, Anthony Bourdain, and Jacques Pepin. If anyone wants to to make a financial contribution to the Really Nice! dinner fund, PM me.

Well, I'm *supremely* tempted by the Pepin and Bourdain dinners, but the poor grad student in me is saying, "Molly, hellooooo! $150, honey!" I am really, really tempted. Plus, it would be really fun to sit with fellow eGulleteers--I've only been to one eG event (seawakim and dave's chocolate tasting last winter), and my boyfriend at the time (now former boyfriend) was being a bit of a grump that night. Bah. At any rate, can anyone tell me what these dinners have been like in the past? Is that an answerable question? Tasting menu-ish, or just multi-course? I assume the food would be outstanding, but can anyone tell me about previous experiences at these events?

I just got a res at Brasa for the Bourdain dinner! The price is $250 per couple with one cook book, or $150 per person with a cookbook included. (It looks like they're charging 50.00 for the cookbook and $100.00 for the dinner) They're seating from 6:00-9:00, but the eGullet table is at 6:30.

I also put in a call on the Jacques Pepin dinner, but the person in charge wasn't there, so they took my name and number to get back to me. Not sure of the cost on that one.

I'm really looking forward to this!

The prices vary and are set by the restaurant based on their costs plus the price of the book. The upcoming events will range from $95 on up. When you think about it, you are getting a 4 or 5 course dinner inspired by an author you like, generous wine pours matched to each course, a signed 1st edition and some face time with the author. So far, all of the authors have been charming, sociable and easy for our local chefs to work with. All of the local chefs have outdone themselves. I have had a terrific time being roadie and chief shmoozer. We assume the Portland events will be as successful. I hope to see you repeatedly. We are trying to figure out gift certificates and season tickets and how to get signed copies of the books to those who can't make a dinner. Let us know what else would please you.

I had the pleasure of attending a Book and the Cook event at the Ritz-Carlton here in Philadelphia with Andrea Immer playing hostess/author/cool sommeliere in March of last year. She's a fun and fascinating woman, and translates her passion for her subject in a painless and interesting fashion, rather than a pedantic and dull one (as is, unfortunately, often the case.)

I'd highly recommend attending the event she is hosting. Her books are excellent and ones I often recommend to those wishing to learn more about wine without getting bogged down in technical terminology, "wine geek speak" or endless memorization of geography and vintage charts.

To those of you that will be fortunate enough to attend, have fun!!!

I got my husband and I signed up for the Pepin dinner at Union Bay Cafe. I asked to be seated at the eGullet table, but the gentleman taking my reservation hadn't ever heard of eGullet. Maybe if more people sign up, they'll put us together?

Cool! Thanks for the news, Judy.

We're signed up for Tony Bourdain and Andrea Immer. We'll be waiting anxiously for news about Thomas Keller's date.

John at Serafina said that he expected the price to be "a little less" than last year's $95, which included two books, as this year they will have a deal for couples who only need one book.

Thanks so much for the information...I've reserved dinner for two for Tony's appearance at Brasa. Can't wait to see the man again and get the cook book, which promises to be an entertaining read from the excerpts that have been shared so far!

  • 4 weeks later...

Does anyone know if there is still availability at the Bourdain 6:30 dinner?? If I'm to afford the dinner, I can't afford to call Brasa from Whidbey... I suppose I could reserve another time, if need be, but would rather be with the eGulleteers. Just to insure that someone will be there to slap me, should I become giddy. Thanks!

Ours are at 6:30. Too bad we can't all sit together. I asked about an eGullet table when I reserved but they didn't know what I was talking about. I guess we should have organized our own :hmmm:

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it. I've been a fan of Pepin's for years.

We took my mother to the dinner last night. She was thrilled. We had a very good meal and plenty of attention from Jacques. Service was a bit rough; we had a few long waits for courses and some people who got there around the same time as us finished an hour sooner.

Does anyone know who the photographer was, or who she was working for? She took some shots of our group that I'd like to get copies of.
