Los Cabos

Thought I would spring a quick question for you guys...I am heading to Los Cabos for 6 nights and wanted to find at least one small really good authentic place while I am there. I will be writing about the trip for the paper and would love a good "find" to write about.

We had some excellent street food/ small cafe food when we went there last year............places where you screw your courage to the sticking point, decide not to worry about hygeine, and order the least-translatable item on the menu - and it was all fabulous!

There's a small restaurant about four or five blocks inland from the tourist strip of bars with an insignia of a red bull on the gate: El Toreador? El Toro? It's lovely! Their stuffed peppers/cinnamon-spiced meat with cream sauce and pommegranite seeds - I'm having a serious blonde moment here - was something I look forward to sampling again! The dining is in a garden courtyard strung with colored lights; the wine list was extensive.

Oh- and do the sunset cruise on the tall wooden ship! (The Pirate Cruise). I think it was built in 1893 or so, and it's one of the few remaining in the world. The deck rocks with the swells, you hear nothing but the wind in the rigging and the partying of the other guests.........it was the best time I ever had down there!

I'm a canning clean freak because there's no sorry large enough to cover the, "Oops! I gave you botulism" regrets.

This is off the Food Network's website; I just noticed it this morning.

They have a section on Cabo San Lucas with restaurant recommendations; I'd post a link but I'm too stupid to figure it out :huh:

"Top 10 Foodie Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas:

1.Visit the salsa bar at Felix’s

2. Try a traditional Mexican breakfast

3. Dine at tables in the sand

4. Feast on fish tacos

5. Enjoy a fresh margarita

6. Eat lobster

7. Drink tequila at Sammy Hagar's bar"

8. Go marlin fishing

9. Sample wahoo, bonito,

amber jack, and other types of fish

10. Have a picnic on the beach

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Since it's short notice, I'll try to help:

I assume you've already checked out this thread you posted on a while back:

http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=31240&hl=cabo

I would love to have a report on this place:

I would stay away from all chain-related places -- Senor Frogs, Shrimp Factory, et al. These are the Applebees of Mexico.

Try to find the areas where the locals who are working the resorts, etc, eat. Often this will be a busy street just off a main section. I'm not familiar with Los Cabos, so I don't know how it will be there. Busy stands are the best. I often just ask the people who work at the resort. Ask for a good place for comida corrida or desayunos. The tortillas should be fresh and the salsas excellent.

Look for freshly cooked shrimp and fish, or even better, shrimp ceviche. In both Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, there's a popular dish called pescado zarandeado, which can be fantastic. See here (not the best pic in the world):

I think that Charlie Trotters is going to be out of my price range...the red bull place sounds like a good one to check out....I am going to do the wooden ship tour as well as the ATV tour....but mostly I am going to hold down a stool at one of the 2 swim up bars at the Presidente Los Cabos where I am staying....I did try some barbacoa at the plaza in Los Cabos last year...some of the best i have ever had....and the lady was selling it out of an ice chest converted into a hot box....does not get more authentic "street food" than that.....and I didnt get sick....think I will get some again!...I will post pics when I am back from cabo and vegas..
