I believe that the Vietnamese refer to the unfried kind as Goi Cuon (sounds like, in my very bad vietnamese accent, Goy Kwan) and the fried spring rolls as Cha Gio (sounds like Chai Ya). At least, this is so in the region that my co-workers are from.

I believe that's correct, as I recognize those spellings from menus.

Whether that's pronounced correctly or not will have to come from someone else.

Its in a questionable part of town, but in the same complex as a cop shop so I think its pretty safe. 

Cop shop must mean something different where you live.

Is that a mini-police station?

Yes, thats exactly what it is. Apparently well needed in that area.

But that restaurant is really quite neat. They had the traditional tables with covers, in a private area, cordoned off by gossamer curtains. It looks like a nice place for a group to meet, earlier in the evening :wink:

There is also an african convenient store in that complex that looked to have some very interesting items. Unfortunately, at the time we visited, it reeked of what smelled like urine? But I bet there are some neat finds in there in any case.

I'm doing some prep work for the spring rolls. I'll let the veggies marinate for a couple of hours, as I go out to eat at a Thai place, then mosey over to Central Market. I'm meeting a friend there so it should be lots of fun. I hope they let me take pictures!

Ok, breakfast pictures updated, and on to lunch.

Lunch was the aloo gobi mattar and saffron rice, garnished with one of my favorite stuffed pepper pickle. I also snuck one of the Indian sweets.

On the way home, I stopped at this place called 99 cent only. Its a nifty dollar store grocery.

On the right are two of the items I found, that might be interesting to try with the aloo.

Ok, I'm home (safe and sound thanks y'all)

I've got pics edited and I'm having technical trouble uploading.

The weather is hellish, I ended up driving the last 15 minutes in pouring rain and gusting winds. Bad timing, nessa, but hey.... I was out of coffee, capice?

Anyway, I think I've created too many albums and can't view em all. So here are the shots of dinner, and I'll work on the rest in the meantime.

This stuff is ambrosia. Its major flavors are keffir lime, lemon grass, chicken and cilantro.

And I had larb. At least I think thats what it said.

Yes, it was with chicken, basil, cilantro, mint, lemongrass, lime juice, lovely red onions, and a healthy dose of chile. the did offer it with pork or beef

Its all over a bed of lettuce, and I was really all over it! I've got enough leftover for lunch. Which is a good thing, considerin' my lazy butt ain't making diddly tonight. I'll post my pics from CM and toddle off to bed.

Ok, here is my home away from home. Just kidding.

I forgot to take a picture of the outside.

After dinner, which was just across the street, the wind picked up, the skies blackened, and we debated just making a run for home. But we were already *there* and I needed coffee. I also wanted to spread the good word, if you know what I mean. I'm a believer :rolleyes:

So, I rather rushed through the store in record time, and probably saved myself a bundle in the process.

So, as you enter you start in the veggie section.

I can easily spend 30 min or so browsing all the different varieties of peppers, herbs, potatoes etc. I've never seen their produce look anything but fresh and delicious. Heaven.

Moving right along at a rather smart pace for my short little legs, we come to the fruit area. I had to get some nectarines, just look at em! I also snagged a big ol' mango.

I couldn't find ground lamb, so I summoned one of the meat goddeses and she pointed the package out to me. Above my eye level, of course. Figures :hmmm: .

This lamb. :wub: Its so pretty it made me jump up and down with joy, much to the amusement of said goddess, and the embarassment of my beautiful dining partner. I thought it was beef at first, it was so... red. Its a bit of a thick grind, and doesn't have nearly the fat content of ground lamb that I've found everywhere else. I can't wait to use it. I'm thinkin' kefta/kofta are in my near future. Depends on when I get to the Middle Eastern market. I wonder if I should freeze it just in case......

I digress. We flew past the wine section, listening to the ominous rumbles and grumbles from outside.

That brought us bustling to the bulk section. After adroitly pilfering two cups of sample coffee, I filled up on some coffee beans. I am an adultress. I like flavored coffee.

I also like unflavored, but I'm weak. They didn't have what I wanted so I mixed a coconut, cinnamon hazelnut and amaretto. Last week they had one similar but this time they were out and only had it in the ever-so-pointless-to-me decaf :wacko: So, I improvised, as they were all the same price.

which was alarmingly depleted. Granted it was what, an hour before closing or something? This is where I come when I don't feel like baking bread. Superb.

Out we scampered to the car, in vain hopes of making it home before the rain hit.

Well, thats it for tonight, who knows what tomorrow will hold? Kefta? Something with veal? Anyone know how long ground lamb is good in the fridge?

Nessa: awesome blog!! The Aloo makes me yearn for my mom's food.

Is there any chance that you can post the recipe for the soup you made with the chicken legs and chipotle in the recipe archive? It looks amazing!

Breakfast today was the other bundle from the Vietnamese store, and a nectarine.

This bundle was quite different yet every bit as delicious. I'm going back for more, thats for sure. This one had in it yellow mung beans, pork belly, and a lot of black pepper :wub: . The nectarine was out of this world. The smell alone was worth its weight in gold.

Lunch was the Larb. I had it cold, and loved it. I think I'll be making this on the dog days of summer. I put it on a bed of marinated napa cabbage and julianned carrots, which I took them from my spring roll stash. :hmmm:

I *have* to make those tonight. The rest I'll decide when I get home, I guess.

Texas really is hallowed ground, you know. :biggrin: I almost kissed the ground when we got back from Chicago. As much as I moan about the heat, and as much as I like to travel, it just gets in your blood. We used to refer to Texas, jokingly, as the Promised Land, when we were up north. I've loved every place that I've lived, to be honest. But there's just something about Texas. Maybe its that the heat makes you crazy?

Just make sure you settle somewhere that has a Central Market :rolleyes:

Speaking of which, I might need to stop back by today to get that camembert that I forgot. And I've a hankering for some good bleu. :hmmm:

Great blog! As the bumper sticker says - "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could." People who come to visit us are always amazed how seriously Texans take their home state.

Central Market (or as we call it "Central Markup") is an awesome store. I haven't seen any other store with so much variety of so many types of products. I live in Austin and go to the central location almost every week even though it's a bit out of the way for me. Whole Foods is similar, but they focus too much on the organic/natural products rather than greate selection of gourmet (for lack of other word) products. It's interesting that both stores got started in Austin.

      I'm thinking about starting a blog featuring the recipes of antoine Carême that I've translated from 1700s French? No English versions of his works exist and his work is hard to find, even though he is the greatest chef who ever lived. After I get through his works I'd add menon, la Varenne, and other hard to find, but historically important masters of French cuisine.

      Originally, we intended to spend this Chinese New Year in Hong Kong. We have travelled a lot last year and will need to attend a wedding already next month in Germany, so I was happy to spend some quiet days at home (and keep the spendings a bit under control as well). As a consequence, we had not booked any flights in the busiest travel time of the year in this region …
       
      But – despite all good intentions – I found myself two weeks ago calling the hotline of my favourite airline in the region, essentially cashing in on three years of extensive business travel and checking where I could get on short notice over CNY on miles. I was expecting a laughter on the other side of the line but this is the one time my status in their loyalty reward program paid out big time: three seats for either Seoul or Kansai International (earliest morning flights, of course). No need to choose, really – Kyoto, here we come !

      Alright so as of a few months ago, I decided to take an impromptu trip to Europe--mostly unplanned but with several priorities set in mind: find the best food and locate the most game-changing ice cream spots on the grounds of each city I sought out for. One of the greatest, most architecturally unique and divine cities I have visited thus far has gotta be Vienna, Austria. But what in the heck is there to eat over there?! (you might ask). 'Cause I sure as hell didn't know. So, I desperately reached out to a local Viennese friend of mine, who knows and understands my avid passion for all things edible, and she immediately shot back some must-have food dishes. Doing a bit of research beforehand, I knew I had to try the classic "Kasekreiner". Please forgive my German if I spelled that wrong. But no matter how you say it- say it with passion, because passion is just about all I felt when I ate it. Translated: it basically means cheese sausage. Honestly, what is there not to love about those two words. Even if that's not necessarily your go-to, do me a favor and give it a shot. Trust me, you won't regret it. A classic Austrian pork sausage with pockets of melty cheese, stuffed into a crisp French Baguette. No ketchup necessary (...and as an American, that's saying a lot). YUM. Best spot to try out this one-of-a-kind treat?! Bitzinger bei der Albertina – Würstelstand.       OK, I'm back, by popular demand! hehe....  After being back for 2 days, I'm still struggling with crazy jetlag and exhaustion - so please bear with me!
       
      This year, for our Asian adventure, we went to Bali, which for those who don't know, is one of the islands in Indonesia.  Bali is a very unique place - from its topology, to the people, language, customs, religion and food.  Whereas the majority of people in Indonesia are Muslim, most people in Bali are Balinese Hindu, which from what I understand is a little like Indian Hinduism, but has more ancestor worship.  Religion is very important to many people in Bali - there are temples everywhere, and at least in one area, there are religious processions through the street practically every day - but we'll get to that later.
       
      Bali has some food unique to it among its Indonesian neighbors, but like everywhere, has seen quite a bit of immigration from other Indonesian islands (many from Java, just to the west) who have brought their classic dishes with them.
       
      Basically all Indonesians speak Indonesian, or what they call Bahasa Indonesia, or just Bahasa, which, anyone who has read my prior foodblogs wouldn't be surprised to hear that I learned a little bit just before the trip.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to use any of it, except a couple times which were totally unnecessary.  When speaking with each other, most people in Bali speak Balinese (totally different from bahasa) - many times when I tried using my bahasa, they smiled and replied, and then tried to teach me the same phrase in Balinese!  As time went on, and I used some of the Balinese, I got lots of surprised smiles and laughs - who is this white guy speaking Balinese?!?  Seriously though, tourism has been in Bali for a very long time, so just about everyone we encountered spoke English to some degree.  Some people spoke German as well, as they supposedly get lots of tourists from Germany.  As one of our drivers was telling us, Bali is heavily dependent on tourism as they have no real industry other than agriculture, which doesn't pay nearly as well as tourism does.
       
      While there are beaches all around the island, most of the popular beach areas are in the south of the island, and those areas are the most highly touristed.  We spent very little time in the south as we are not really beach people (we get really bored) and during planning, decided to stay in less touristed areas so we'd have more opportunities for local food... this didn't work out, as you'll see later.
       
      So, it wouldn't be a KennethT foodblog without photos in the Taipei airport and I-Mei Dim Sum, which we called home for about 4 hours before our connection to Bali...

      Recently, there was a thread about stir frying over charcoal, which immediately brought to mind memories of eating in Bangkok in July 2013.  At that time, I hadn't gotten into the habit of writing food blogs, and considering that I had some spare time this weekend (a rarity) I figured I would put some of those memories down on paper, so to speak.  Back then, neither my wife nor I were in the habit of taking tons of photos like we do nowadays, but I think I can cobble something together that would be interesting to folks reading it.
       
      In the spirit of memories, I'll first go back to 2006 when my wife and I took our honeymoon to Thailand (Krabi, Bangkok and Chiang Mai), Singapore and Hanoi.  That was our first time to Asia, and to be honest, I was a little nervous about it.  I was worried the language barrier would be too difficult to transcend, or that we'd have no idea where we were going.  So, to help mitigate my slight anxiety, I decided to book some guides for a few of the locations.  Our guides were great, but we realized that they really aren't necessary, and nowadays with internet access so much more prevalent, even less necessary.
       
      Prior to the trip, when emailing with our guide in Bangkok to finalize plans, I mentioned that we wanted to be continuously eating (local food, I thought was implied!)  When we got there, I realized the misunderstanding when she opened her trunk to show us many bags of chips and other snack foods.. whoops...  Anyway, once the misconception was cleared up, she took us to a noodle soup vendor:


      On the right is our guide, Tong, who is now a very famous and highly sought after guide in BKK.... at the time, we were among here first customers.  I had a chicken broth based noodle soup with fish ball, fish cake and pork meatball, and my wife had yen ta fo, which is odd because it is bright pink with seafood.  I have a lime juice, and my wife had a longan juice.
