It may seem a bit counterintuitive (because the forum name suggests it's only for "Special Occasions"), but this is actually best covered by our "Special Occasions" forum rather than "General"--since the former sub-specializes in Mail Ordered foods and Internet ordering is a sub-category of that. So, I'm moving this topic there.

I also recommend that you look around the rest of the Special Occasions forum, since there are quite a few existing topics on specific Mail Order and Internet available food sources.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any success ordering breads from an online source? Since moving to Sacramento, I have not been able to find a decent roll. I like the German style rolls (Brötchen) and they just don't seem to be available here. Even the German deli near me only has loaves of bread.

I did find a German bakery in Atlanta that takes orders online. I'm wondering ...

I am a cheese fanatic.

I buy from Ideal Cheese Shop http://www.idealcheese.com/

In fact I just got an order on Wednesday. (FexEx overnight)

Ricotta Salata a very dry ricotta similar to farmer's cheese but with more flavor.

Lancashire from England

Farmhouse cheddar also from England - 3-year old.

Moliterno, an aged sheep's milk cheese from Sardinia

Kasserie (young soft style) from Cyprus

Caciotta al Tartufo an Umbrian cheese with truffles.

Also a pound of peppadews.

I am in heaven.

I also shop at Ethnic Grocer http://www.ethnicgrocer.com/eg/default.asp

if I need something I can't find locally.

I buy specialty flour on line. Some things just are not available locally.

Turducken from Cajun Grocer on line. Other specialty items. Teas, jams, also

rices and beans from Indian Harvest http://www.indianharvest.com/ - warning this site can be dangerous to your finances!

I have ordered breads, sent overnight express from http://www.breadalone.com/

Lately I've been bored with what's available at my local markets and am interested in finding great food over the internet.  I'm curious to know your favorite internet food source sites.  Mine so far is Usingers Sausages.  They have great sausages, hot dogs, etc.

I saw the topic heading and clicked on to say Usingers.

Their hot dogs are indeed great, but some of the etc. is even better - Along with their dogs I'm a major fan of their fresh brats, braunschweiger, garlic summer sausage and yachtwurst. Their ring bolognas (bologni ?) are fun, and work well with some warm german potato salad.

Usingers has been in the sausage business since 1880. As good as it gets this side of the Rhine.

Thinking back, I realize that I have ordered quite a few items online after watching the show "Food Finds" on the TV Food Network.

I haven't kept a separate list but realize I should do so. I will search them out and put them in a folder of Food Favorites.

I am glad you started this discussion.

Usingers is pretty good and I have ordered brats from them.

However I like Nolacheks better since they came online.

When I lived in Wisconsin back in the mid 1950s we used to drive to Thorpe to buy their fresh brats and the hams that were dry cured.

They have extended their line. They now have a frest brat made with dried cranberries and wild rice that is out of this world. Another favorite of mine is the fresh apricot/Dijon brat.

Under whole hams, click on the letter (top left, in the photo) corresponding to the item you're interested in. Description, weight and price come up in a pop up window.

Yeah, sadly they leave something to be desired e-commerce-wise, but the hams are great.

The price will vary with size and type of ham, and whether you are buying whole hams or slices, but figure in the $40-60 range for a nice-sized ham, price includes shipping if you're east of the Mississippi. I recently bought a 12 lb. ham there for about $50. You can spend a lot more or a lot less depending on what you buy.

Here's how their interface works:

To view some sample prices, click on the category you are interested in (e.g. "Whole Hams") and then click around on the pictures of the products; you'll get a popup window with more info, including estimated prices. Very intuitive, no? Is there an information architect in the house?

Best advice is to call them @ 1-800-543-HAMS(4267) when Monday morning rolls around and talk to one of the (very friendly & knowledgable) operators. Tell them what you want and they'll hook you right up. First time ordering you might want to go for a cheaper option like a package of slices until you know for sure that you like their ham. Personally, I can't get enough of the stuff. Country ham, biscuits and cantaloupe... them's good eatin'.

Interestingly, some NC country ham producers have started to make Italian-style prosciutto. I have been sorely tempted to give this a try, but I generally wimp out and stay with the tried and true. Besides, with Faicco's Pork Store right down the street from me, it's not like I'm in dire need of a reliable prosciutto connection.

There's so much I can't get here in Vermont, I'd die without the internet...

Cheese from iGourmet. The quality and selection are excellent, and their customer service did way right by me by doing a walk-though of the warehouse to check on availability of some unusual stuff.

Spanish products from Tienda. Paella rice, chorizo, sherry vinegar, smoked paprika, gas burners...

Saffron and vanilla beans in large quantities from Vanilla, Saffron Imports. Quality and prices are excellent, and their website has a wealth of information about both products.

The CMC Company for all things Mexican – a vast variety of dried peppers, also masa harina, corn husks, herbs and spices.

Macadamia nuts from Zenobia for my coveted Macadamia Toffee.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some other gems, but there's a start.

Although I do a lot of baking, I occasionally want to sample something that people have mentioned.

I have ordered bread from Gazins https://gazins.com/lg_display.cfm?page_number=10

and found it was very good.

I have also sent is as gifts to friends who found it to be very good.

(As you can probably guess, I also manage to find other goodies to order at the same time.)

All kinds of hard-to-find food; lots of items you've probably forgotten all about and didn't know still existed. Tremendous fun to browse--I nearly always find something to treat myself with while on this site, so I mostly stay away

Seems like an occasional trip down to the Bay Area would meet your needs-there are probably other things you can't get up in Sacramento that you could pick up at the same time. (And if not, well, at least it gives you a chance to see the ocean and cool off for the afternoon!)

I'm not sure where to find this bread, though, because quite frankly, I'm not sure what it is. If you post this on the Caliifornia forum, someone will probably be able to help you.

Are you referring to Hofer's Bakery in Helen, GA? They are okay. I lived in Atlanta and Germany and I tried the bread at Hofer's, IMO it was okay, not great.

You might want to try this one, they were recommended on "Food Finds" on Food Network:

http://www.guglhupf.com/

I live in Durham and work only about 5 mins from Gulghhupf. I'm originally from the UK and so am accustomed to European style bread.

Guglhupf is definitely a gem of a place and their breads, cakes and patisserie are spot on for authenticity. Last time I was there (I go every other week), I ran into a German lady.

The bread freezes well too so if you are ordering by mail, you should order as much as your freezer can manage. It will be worth it!
