Looking for Goods eats near Ocean City

As Spring has arrive, I am heading to Ocean City from DC for Easter weekend with a group of friends. Obviously, most of the summer places won't be open yet but we are looking to expand our knowledge of cuisine in the vicinity of Ocean City. Willing to go off Island S. to Cape May or N. to AC.

Looking for local input!!

Casual place to have lunch is Ike's Crab cakes. Some of the best crab cakes in New Jersey. Great fruit iced teas and Excellent fried potato chips. Otherwise, Cape May is only 25 minutes south on the Parkway , however, most places will be booked .

Oh my God, will you marry me? :)

You are describing the daily diet of my childhood!

For really great pizza, go to the original Mack's Pizza at 83rd Street and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor, NJ. Joe Mack still works there every now and then, and the pies are just incredible.

Another great pizza joint is Peace a Pizza in Stone Harbor. Great selection of more "gourmet" pies (my favorite is their macaroni and cheese pizza). I think they also have locations in the Philly area.

I just spent a couple of days down in the OC hanging with friends and my niece and nephew who are 6 and 8 years old respectively, and incredible little eaters. The kids love to go out to dinner as much as the adults do, so planning the evening's dining activities is always a lively discussion.

We went back to an old favorite on Sunday evening, the Bubba Mac Shack in Somers Point, just over the bay from Ocean City. What a totally fun place. Great food, live blues and great drinks all served up with a smile. Lots of seafood and BBQ on the menu and we did some damage to some clams and oysters on the half shell to start, and then tried the Gator Bites, small battered and fried cubes of alligator served with a cocktail sauce. All very tasty. I saw Country Fried Steak on the menu and just had to try it, since it had been years since I'd tasted this wonderful southern delicacy. The gargantuan platter that was placed before me took my breath away:

Oh. My. God. I've never seen an entire 12 oz. ribeye steak that's been battered and fried before. YIKES. Once I got over my shock the CFS was actually quite tasty. There was a considerable amount of gristly edges to the steak, but it was so huge it didn't really matter. Eventually I cried uncle and sort of scraped off the becoming soggy coating and just ate the steak with my garlic mashed potatoes. I was stuffed after that.

My nephew Ruben decided he was hungry so he ordered Bubba's Road Kill Combo of ribs, pulled pork and meatloaf. This was what showed up:

gallery_7409_476_44324.jpg

Another monstrous and scary platter. But again, very tasty stuff. The meatloaf was sliced a bit thin but was very well seasoned. Ribs were good and the pulled pork might have been the best of the lot.

The Bubba Mac Blues Band was live that night and we had a blast watching several older couples tear up the dance floor and swing dance the night away. Great place that's great to bring the kids. There is an extensive kids menu, but of course these sweet babies will only order steak and BBQ off the grown up menu.

Lunch on the OC boardwalk yielded a pleasant surprise in Hula Grill. A recent mention by Craig Laban in the Philadelphia Inquirer had brought this gem to my attention. Really great fresh seafood, chicken and burgers, all done up in "island style". I had a Crab Burger lunch special which basically turned out to be a crab cake with very little filler served with good tartar sauce. I asked to sub the house Pineapple salsa for my fries and got a big boat of very refreshing pineapple chunks with some peppers and cilantro thrown in for flavor. Other items ordered amongst us and sampled included a very tender marinated ahi tuna, and a huge portion of salmon teriyaki.

I had my fix of Kohr Brothers Custard too. You just can't walk past this place and not stop and have one. This stuff makes you feel like a kid again. I had Strawberry/Banana twist and it was just awesome. Other combos included the standard Chocolate/Vanilla twist, Orange/Vanilla twist, Chocolate/Peanut Butter twist and Mint Chocolate Chip/Vanilla twist. YUMMY! This really is the best old fashioned custard I think I've had.

I love the OC boardwalk. It's so cheesy and old fashioned. But there's something so comforting and nostalgic about it. <sigh> Wish I could be kid again and spend all day at the beach and playing in the arcade and riding the amusement rides.

Is Wonderland still on the OC boardwalk (with its frozen chocolate-covered bananas)? That's where I had my first kiss.

Hmmm. Not sure. We weren't really scoping for frozen bananas so I didn't notice. There's still far more funnel cakes, salt water taffy, fudge and hot dogs than you could possibly try in an entire summer though.

My favorite stand that I saw (but unfortunately didn't have time to try) was a place called Brain Freeze. They specialized in frozen drinks of all sorts.

Sweet memory. I got my first kiss in my snowy driveway.

Oh - and welcome to eGullet, Diner Girl. I'll second Curlz on having more sassy females around.

Yes Wonderland is still there and it's even bigger (more rides) than in previous years. It's more geared towards younger children (2 to 12) teen's wouldn't find it very exciting. Right up the boardwalk at 7th st. is a big water park that would be more to older kids liking, but they also have a special area in the back for real little kids and it's a great place to spend the day if you want a safe water experience for the babies. Very family oriented. Now back to some food places in OC. For a unique dinner try Oves on the boardwalk at 4th st. pretty good seafood not your usual plain fried stuff Lots of broiled options and always fresh every day. another great place for breakfast or lunch (especially) is the 4th st. cafe on atlantic ave. it';s a real local year round favorite. Also try the seafood place on 1st. st. an atllantic, real good dinners. For great breakfast there are many places to choose from all over town on of my favs is on 9th. st. & ocean ave called the Beach grill. and the Varsity Inn on 8th st. and welsey ave. Another real good lunch & dinner place is Callahans on asbury ave. between 6 th & 7 th. st's. If it's a cheesestake you seek try Voltaco's ( a true local legend) and a new place just opened this summer called Donkey's on asbury between 10th & 11 st. I can't finish without mentioning Brown's on the bdwk. at 2nd st. there famous for donuts, the bike riders in the am. flock to the place. For subs (hogies) my fav's Primos on asbury between 6 & 7th. st. Also Saco's up on 9th. st. (there from the original AC White house sub family. Hope this helps.

Family is heading to Ocean City tomorrow for the weekend. I read all of the listings & we know all the great boardwalk eats, but we need a "nicer" type place for Sat night dinner.

There will be 6 adults & 3 kids.

Hoping for some good seafood.

We are staying at 9th Street & Ocean Ave, so something close would be great.

Last year we ate at a small place between the hotel & the boardwalk - I dont recall the name but it was very nice.

Any ideas?

We were down there last week and found a nice casual place for the whole family called the ANCHORAGE TAVERN. its a short ride across the 9 street bridge. Its in somers point on BAY AVE. From oc cross the bridge when you come to the circle stay to the right and bay ave will be the first right. anchorage is on the left about a quarter mile on the left. They have an extensive menu and im sure you will find something for everyone. It does get busy so expect to wait about an hour or more. Theres another place up the road called THE DOCS PLACE which has some nice seafood selections but they require reservation so it might be too late to go there

dont forget MACK and Mancos and KOHRS Custard and of course JOHNSONS Popcorn

The place on 9th st. between bdwk and atl. ave. may of been Periwinkles and across the st. is Spadafora's Down East Rest. both are good and close. You could also walk up to 10th .st. and the bay to Dan's seafood , it's been around forever. One place that gets overlooked by many is The Blooming Tulip on 10th st. between Ocean ave. and the Bdwk. it's seafood and Italian and very kid freindly. Another option is Cousin's rest. at 104 Asbury ave. and don't forget to check out Callahan's Cafe they started doing dinner I think 399-3639. If you look a few posts back you'll see some other places I think are good.

Thanks for the welcome(s), all.

Is the Chatterbox still open in OCNJ?

I started salivating when someone mentioned Oves. We used to ride our bikes all the way in from the Gardens to have breakfast there. Then we'd ride up the B'walk to 12th, then back down and home again in the mornings. Then hit the beach all day.

I'm headed to Stone Harbor for a few days of R&R next week and cannot WAIT to have Mack's pizza there. Their original store is on the border of Stone Harbor and Avalon, and I have been craving their pizza with a birch beer. There's no better combination.

I had dinner at Periwinkles my last night in Ocean City a few weeks ago. It was lovely and the food was delicious. The signature escargot were some of the best I've had in quite some time. Pasta dishes were also excellent. They dealt with children very well and the service couldn't have been friendlier. It isn't four star dining by any means, but I was very impressed with this homey little place.

Yes the Chatterbox is still opened and run by the same family since forever. It hasn't changed any in 30 or more years. If you use to go to Oves do you remember Brown's at 2nd & bdwk. for the donuts. Oves does a pretty decent dinner and the view's the best around.

Brown's. Ah, now there's a memory. There's nothing like the smell of their freshly done donuts right next to the sand and ocean. Our cousins had a house on the ocean right around 2nd and Atlantic, and we'd go to their beach and head up to Brown's for donuts (and candy).

Man, I'm reliving my childhood bigtime right now. Do you remember Bernie's and their barrels of pickles? I think it changed to the Gardens Market, and now is probably condos or something. Across from French Real Estate, as I recall. My brother and I used to ride our bikes to Bernie's for pickles and other deli items. And, they had soft-serve ice cream outside, I think. We always ate Kohr Bros. on the boardwalk since we grew up with that family in PA.

Thanks for the memories.

You neglected to mention that if you want to drink more than water or soda before dinner and you arrive without an alcohol stash, a trip to the Sommers Point traffic circle with its spacious liquor store is in order.

My parents always made the trip, with me in tow, before we joined the line waiting

outside Watsons. I considered that the quintessional OC dinner.

Also, since hurricanes are on everyone's minds, my mother told me how she

was caught in a rooming house in OC in the l930's with me only a baby and

that the ocean met the bay and the whole place was under water. My father was

safe at home.
