Busy holidays, but here it is -- the December 5, 2003 PR on the new and up an coming Vodka magazine.

Clickety here

The new lifestyle magazine titled Vodka Magazine will launch its premier issue nationwide in February 2004. Vodka covers hot topics in downtown urban 'bohemian' living, and serves as an exploration guide to downtown loft living and life.

It looks like it may be a bit girlie, but in a way that probably will attract men.

I can only wonder who the Russian Chicks are going to be -- similar to the hotties featured in Maxim, et al.?

Here's some graphics from Cheryl Hoffman for the magazine.

Thanks Beans! I've already signed up for e-mail notifications and will check the Barnes & Noble (located conveniently right across the street) magazine rack ASAP. Will the February issue come out in mid-late January as most publications do? I couldn't tell from the website when to start scoping for it.

 Guess I'm too old or not cool enough to see the appeal. Probably both.

It's like the Cigar Connoisseur ? magazine - I think this one is probably aimed at the opposite gender equiv. of Cigar

Time will tell - I shall pay retail for the first issue at my local magazine/snack/cafe place

Has anyone picked up or read their premiere issue yet? I haven't gotten myself to a decent bookstore only out of fear of spending $$$$ on a huge list I've been keeping around a bit too long while continuously adding on other "must haves."

I've checked out their website this morning to see more up and running. Their merch is very cool. I think I've got to have the Pink Elephant tote myself. :raz:

I *love* their cat graphic for the "D'town Hot Urban Destinations."

I picked up an issue late last week but have only had time to skim it briefly. Interesting recipes, lots of "see and be seen" bars mentioned in New York and the Pacific Northwest but not too much in between. And you'd think that New York was the only city on the entire East Coast. Interview with the Porn Queen was interesting, but left me scrathicng my head as to what the hell it had to do with vodka, club culture or anything else the magazine purports to be about. The vodka reviews by the "Russian Chicks" were kind of lame.

All in all (and I'm not totally done reading it), the magazine is about a 6 on a scale of 1-10.

I love the Pink Elephant tote and the Pink Elephant Flask even better!

I didn't scroll down far enough to see the flask. :raz: I've got a few pink elephant stir sticks from Pier I, so I must start coordinating that collection!

Yeah, I saw the story title on the website and wonder about the porn queen thing too. I'm not even sure if I'd read it after spending six months tending bar in a strip club or knowing one of the Playmates of the Year fairly well as she was discovered on our pool patio for a Miss Hawaiian Tropics contest.

I'm not a big fan of Bartender magazine myself and rate that about a 6 on the 1-10 scale, but I'll still read it. So, I'm sort of lumping this one into that category too. (I trust your evaluations and taste implicitly Katie!) Thanks for the heads up.

I'm sure the next big urban club features will undoubtedly be South Beach, and am sort of surprised it wasn't in the first issue -- perfect target market demographic.

Beans:

As I said, I haven't read it cover to cover and every word. I might be mistaken about the bars in other East coast cities being completely ignored (although I'm absolutely CERTAIN that no Philadelphia bars were listed ). South Beach might have gotten a mention. I don't remember too clearly. The article definitely left the impression, at least, of being about New York and the Pacific NW. Perhaps the way to get better coverage of the "forgotten geographic zones" is just to submit stuff to the magazine directly? Maybe I'll send them the recipes for the Sicilian Martini and the Key Lime Martini and see what happens.

Recipes were quite interesting and there were several good ones, as I recall.

I'd be really interested to see them do an article about "small batch" vodka distilleries like Hangar One, Charbay, etc. Actually even just an article on vodkas that are produced in the US would be pretty cool.

All in all, I'd say the comparison to Bartender mag is a fair one. I almost always find something in there that interests me, like drink recipes for signature cocktails, but a lot of the other stuff is just so-so. And predictably, too many advertisements. Of course, it's not a subscription I'll necessarily purchase, but remember, we can write off these sorts of things on our taxes if we itemize

The Pink Elephant merchandise is adorable. I'd love to see the Pink Elephant stir sticks. Those must be just precious! That's going to make for quite the conversation piece when you get the set coordinated!
