Where to eat in Paris in August?

For the record:

Today's Secrets of Paris Newsletter #63, written by Heather Stimmler-Hall, notes that "although most Parisian establishments participate in the Great August Shutdown, many of the bars and restaurants in the 13th are still open. Even the cafés and bistros on the Butte-aux-Cailles are open...."

And, I just recalled that last year, I'd posted some reviews of places open in August and early September that included: Pinxo, La Régalade, L’Abadache, Authenti©, Bistrot Paul Bert, La Petite Cour, Le Cannibale, Le Point Bar + Le Sot L'Y Laisse.

I ate at the marché Saint Honoré last night and all of the restaurants were open along the square including Point Bar and Absinthe.

I live very close to Le Sot L'Y Laisse and so know that it's closed until the first week of Sept.

I drove past Le Bookinistes the other night and noticed it was open, as was Ze Kitchen.

Café Constant is open.

And today's Zurban lists La Muse Vin (11th) and Louis Vins (5th) as both being open this week.

I just wanted to add the list of restaurants that Zurban has listed under their ongoing summer section “Open this Week”

8th

Flora Danica

Danish restaurant specialising in all things salmon with a pretty terrace.

142 avenue des Champs-élysées, Metro: Charles de Gaulle etoile.

10th

La Modonnina

Popular neighbourhood Italian place, off the Canal.

10 rue Marie-et-Louise. Metro: Goncourt, République.

11th

Jacques Melac

Great wine bar in the 11th serving charcuterie and basic Auvergnat cuisine. No reservations so go early!

42 rue Leon-Frot, 11th. Metro Charonne.

13th

Sukhothai:

Authentic thai in the 13th.

12 rue du Pere-Guerin, Place d’Italie.

The rentrée is almost here, which means that most restaurants that have been closed for the summer break are either opening or will be opening back up next week.

Thanks Felice. And by the way, I ate at La Boulangerie and it's special and in a special sort-of square. I'll tell all soon.

It's about time to start worrying about what will be open in August. Actually, most often the closures seem to be from the last week in July through the third week in August. Anyone have a list or want to post information they have recently confirmed? As a starter:

Les Papilles is closed the first three weeks in August.

Any list should be regarded with caution. Again and again I've had "reliable" information about summer closings, only to discover that one restaurant or another had chosen to close earlier. After Bastille Day, in my experience, it gets a bit quixotic (or cyranic?).

Perhaps we can make a list and place a few calls.  I don't mind taking a few minutes and getting this year's closing dates for a few restaurants.   Which restaurants should I call?

I was thinking of a less labor intensive scheme: when leaving a restaurant, if we each asked about summer closure, as we did at Les Papilles, we would as a group amass some sizable and current info.

I had planned a trip to Paris in August, but several restaurants I wanted to eat are closed.

Pierre Gagnaire July28-August 27

Les Ambassedeurs August 5- September 4

Any other restaurants open/ closed dates would be great info.

We're from Canada and we've booked a trip to France for about 2 weeks in August - a few days in Paris, then to in Burgundy driving to Lyon and then down to Avignon and back.

However, we're finding that some (many?) places are shut down for the month of August because France is on vacation!?? For example, we tried to book La Tour d'Argent in Paris (highly recommended by friends) and they said they are closed most of that month!

Is this a country-wide thing or just in Paris? Will wineries be closed as well? Any suggestions of places to eat that aren't closed? If all of France is on vacation, will traffic in Burgundy/Rhone be a nightmare?

Merci Beaucoup!!... any advice would be appreciated as the main purpose of the trip is food and wine which would be major a problem if most good restaurants and wineries are closed!!

The closings are mainly in Paris & the large cities. Most of the French stay in France for their vacations so most of the plaves in the south & near the coast stay open.

It is certainly a good idea to book ahead for hotels & restaurants to make sure that they are both open & not fully booked.

We've never had a problem with wineries or other attractions in August, but again if you want to visit any of the famous wineries do check ahead as some won't take visitors without a reservation. Most of the smaller guys are Ok & much more casual.

Other than the weekends traffic shouldn't be a problem. Even then just avoid the autoroutes. Via Michelin will give you routes & links to traffic reports as well as telling you where the speed cameras are.

You should be fine. Have a good time.

Bon courage!

Wednesday-Thursday July 18th-19th, in Le Monde Jean Claude Ribault wrote an inquiry about August restaurant closings in which he recommends one reserve, except at the first two, where it’s impossible, at: Les Cocottes + l'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, both open all August, Citrus Etoile, closed the week of August 15th as well as Saturdays and Sundays, l'Alcazar, les brasseries du groupe Flo, Ratn + le Bistrot italiano the last two Indian and Italian respectively, the last open except for Ferragosto, eg August 15th. He then suggests one miss: le Chardenoux , le Café Bibliothèque + l'Arbuci.

La Petite Cour

Hôtel Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme

La Cour Jardin

Les Ombres

La Maison Blanche

Sens (La Terrasse)

Wednesday-Thursday in Le Monde Jean Claude Ribault reviewed two other places in Paris open in August: the new Café Tournon, 18, rue de Tournon in the 6th, 01-43-26-16-16, closed Sundays but open in August, a la carte 20-35 €, serving Auvergne charcutieries, nicely-seasoned salads, stuffed tomatoes, thick veal liver, steak/frites, duck liver and veal feet as well as good desserts; and Le Moulin de la Galette, coordinates well-known, taken over {when?} by Jérôme Bodereau and Antoine Heerah, serving market produce, pumpkin soup, Jerusalem artichoke, crunchy milk-fed-pork and “amusing” desserts with a 17 € menu at lunch and 25 € at dinner, à la carte count on 45 €, open everyday, including in August.

This is interesting...I wondered where these 2 Passard proteges had gone after you mentioned that Le Chamarré closed its doors. Have you paid them a check out visit yet?

Has your radar pinged on the location of chef Varnier since he left Au C'Amelot?

Nope, but will in 23 days, but who's counting?

No news yet, but Pti should report in soon. Stay tuned to Radio-Gullet.
