Candy

Speaking of Japanese candy, I picked the following up at the pan-Asian market

Pocky G, Strawberry Pocky

And now they've come out with strawberry Pocky G!! Tastes pretty good - exactly like how it sounds. I bought on Tuesday, along with royal milk tea Mousse Pocky. There used to be a royal milk tea normal Pocky that came in a light blue box, but I guess they discontinued it. I liked the normal royal milk tea Pocky better - the mousse one is good before and after you eat it. My tastebuds got used to the milk tea flavour too quickly so I couldn't taste the royal milk tea after a couple bites, but the aftertaste is nice!

im not sure if this has nicotine in it or if its supposed to cover up cigarette breath or what...

i should have looked at the back of the roll when i had the chance but i didnt think to do so.

Anyone tried KissMint's Watering gum? I think it says on the package that it contains six ingredients that make your mouth moist. I couldn't tell when I tried it if my mouth "watered" more than when chewing regular gum. But what do you think the purpose is? For people who are nervous and get dry mouths? And does anyone have any idea what those six special ingredients are?

I think it is for covering up the breath after smoking, since it says things like :

take one after smoking

to refresh your throat and breath

for those who worry about their body.....

watering gum?

this is a new one for me!

I really should pay more attention when shopping.....

why on earth would you want your mouth to water???

the homepage for Glico doesn't mention the 6 special ingredients....

I agree with torakris.

Suttara hito-tsubu (Take one after smoking)!

Ingredients include herbal extract, turmeric extract, and vitamin C, which moisten your throat, and champignon extract, which prevents bad breath.

i actually quite like the choco gummies.

theres no accounting for taste...

I actually like them a lot too! Are they a relatively new product in Japan? Because I remember that, four years ago, my friend moved to Japan from Canada & she was shocked that she couldn't find any choco gummies!

This was the first time I had seen them, of course I hadn't been looking for them either....

According to this page, http://www.ezaki-glico.net/watering/uruoi/index.html (Japanese only), this product contains watering components made from six different organic acids.

The page also says:

It's not only hair and skin that requires "moisture".

When your mouth dries, germs that produce smell become active.

The clear rice paper ones are millet candy.  The original brand, I believe, is the famous Tomoe Ame, which has been around a long time.  I remember going to Toyo's Superette in Manoa, Honolulu back in the 1970s to pick them up on the way home from school.  Nowadays, in the U.S., at least, it's easier to find "Botan Rice Candy" which is basically a copy.  There's also a character called "Tomoe Ame"  in the Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo series, a play on the name of Tomoe Gozen.

I was just thinking of Botan candy--they are a favourite from my childhood and I hadn't realized they were Japanese until a friend brought me some from the US (I'm in Japan now) and I saw the "made in Japan" on the box." I asked a co-worker about them and found that they are called Bontan (note the extra n) in Japan, and they are very old candies--well over 100 years old, so I've been told. The Japanese version has a different box (no cute little boy, but a picture of bontan--a type of Japanese citrus) and NO STICKERS!!! When I was a child, however, Botan ame came with toys... Botan and Bontan candies are made by the same company, and I was told that Tomoe Ame is the copy, not Botan. Not that it matters...I'm sure they're just as yummy!

I'm wild about Japanese candy. There's a tasty cantaloupe-flavored chocolate candy that looks like miniature halved melons.

I buy Botan candy every so often, having fallen in love with its rice paper wrapping and nifty little sticker prizes as a kid when we were stationed in Japan. It seems as if it's changed in the past year or so. It used to be made with millet, and the last few boxes I've bought tasted different, had a different texture, and contained no millet. Bleh. I didn't know there were two types.

I know these candies, but do you really think they are 'intensely flavored'?
im eating them right now... this little cube is passionfruit and i dunno... it seems pretty intensely passionfruity to me. maybe it just seems more intense because they are so little?

they taste similarly. i forgot how much each box cost, but i am sure that the better buy is the bontan ame. there is much more candy per box.
