It's amazing to go into smoke-free bars, but it might put the dry-cleaning business out of business... Your clothes don't come out reeking.

Doug, you can now buy a spray-can of Baccaire, a new product which enables you to spray your clothes with the fine, pungent aroma of tobacco. It was launched in the USA early last week, and it comes in two distinctive aromas "Cool Carolina" or "Classic Virginia". The manufacturers are Atlanta Flavors Inc, and their Marketing VP Avril Primo has announced that they have plans for a range of cigar aromas including "Havana Heaven" and if the new product proves successful then they will launch in Europe in the summer.

Maybe Atlanta Flavors have interests in the dry-cleaning business :laugh:

This is a totally unscientific study, but the one cab driver who drove us in from JFK Monday night said he was having trouble trying to distinguish those people trying to hail a cab in front of bars from those just out for a smoke. I didn't pursue this with any attempt to query him on his opinion of the long term effects on his income or safety cruising under these conditions. We shared the cab with a friend who asked to be dropped off on the corner. The cabbie explained that it would cost no more to take him to his door step. We assured the driver that in spite of the rain our friend wanted to be dropped off on the corner so he could have a smoke before being greeted by his wife at home. It was a long flight and the poor guy had only a chance for a short smoke while waiting for the cab at JFK.

i got to thinking about where all of the extra butts are going to go. one has to assume that the hundreds of cigarette buts that used to go into ashtrays and end up in garbage bags are now going to be littering the street and gutters in front of the bars and around the city. hopefully, bar owners will put ashtrays in front of their places, but that clearly won't be the standard.

i like the ash tray in front of Blue Smoke. if i recall, it says "blew smoke." kinda silly.

I've heard that quite a few restaurants that had separate smoking rooms (cigars) have applied for exemptions.  Stay tuned.

the NYT, today, has an article on that. here if you're subscribed. :laugh::hmmm:

I'm not sure that I understand why they are applying for an exemption because, based on what I've read, when the new, much stricter NY State Smokefree Law goes into effect in a couple of months, it will supercede NYC's law, and the State law has next to no exemptions.

the NYS law is not different than the NYC law as far as "Cigar bars" go. that's why they're applying for the exemption.

The same thing will happen at NY that happens in SF. Some bars will permit smoking, most wont. There are many bars (usually in the seedier areas, but many in "trendy" areas), that turn a blind eye to smoking cigarettes (as well as grass, but that's another issue -- you can usually smoke pot anywhere in the city -- parks, concert halls, etc., even though most concet halls will ask you to put out cigarettes). I think there was even a list in Citysearch a while back of the top ten bars for smoking.

i was, um, "escorted" out of Madison Square Garden by about 5 very dumb looking rent-a-cops during a concert a few years ago for smoking a cigarette. people all around me were smoking out of pipes and bongs of all shapes and sizes. they, apparently, got to see the rest of the concert. i gotta start smoking more weed.

a bouncer was stabbed and killed last night while apparently trying to get 2 guys to stop smoking in a bar in manhattan.

details, of course, will most likely never be known.  pass judgment as you see fit, if you see fit.

Latest news from the front line is that this is a tedious business for bar staff, who, even if they don't get stabbed, get resentment from customers. Deciding to tell someone to put it out can also, some bar staff feel, threaten their gratuity. The other problem being experienced at bars which open late in residential areas is neighbors complaining about the smokers who stand out in the street conducting conversations in the early hours of the morning.

jesus, that's been obvious since they even suggested the law. i'm wondering if the city, in all of their wisdom, has a plan for this. my guess is "no." the smokers and their poison are no longer the problem of the patrons and the barstaff. they are now the problem of the people trying to sleep.
