Meades Eats

Did anyone chance upon this programme on BBC2 last night?

JM is one of the few ( now ex ) critics for whom I had any respect and I have always found him to be both amusing and knowledgeable.

In last night's show, he drew his sights on the slightly easy target of Fast Food.

While the show was amusing in parts ( the shot of him in overalls holding a sausage meat stuffed condom is one that will haunt me for a while !!) and JM is never less than watchable, I couldn't help thinking that it was all a bit lame.

Brits don't like food/the rich owned all the land/People like Fast Food becuase it does not look like the animal from which it has been taken etc etc

What did anyone else think?

I saw it

While it made some valid points the presentation and camerawork was pretentious in the extreme, and distracted from the otherwise sensible commentary.

Some of the points were much exagerated. Not all french food is good, nor all fast food bad.

Could do better, but I'll watch the next episode

It was a little cliched. And he told you, surprise, surprise, that you would never eat the food if you knew what was in it and how it was cooked! It always amazes me how people deny to themselves what actually goes on in a kitchen! On the other endI have a friend who will only go to restaurants that have 'open' kitchens!

'you're norman bates with a briefcase.'

... and it does happen.

Woe betide anyone who complains.

I have since left the cheffing business and am now a contractor. I have seen the insides of some bloody dodgy looking food factories I can tell you. I didnt see the programme referred to as the telly was pre booked for the corrie fest, I assume it was referring to the fast food prep industry. Did he actually get inside a McCain chip plant? They are by far the worst I have come across.

I found the programme to be a rehash of well rehearsed arguements presented in an over familiar style. Gill, my wife has a particular aversion to these sort of hectoring "why oh why don't the British eat better food" programmes as typified by Rick Stiens recent efforts.

During the course of my work as a painting /specialist coatings contractor I have been in to re coat/ repair concrete floors etc. The factory where they build Toyota car engines is cleaner than the McCain chip plant.

Yeah, but Toyota plants, having been round several, are cleaner than most hospitals. It's not a fair comparison

Watched JM's show for the first time last night. Thought had had some very putatively valid points - "Food-Culture" in UK is largely about "lifestyle-perception" and not the food itself, most UK-foodies are just middle-class versions of 'boyz for the hood', drinking Cristal etc etc, there is not food-revolution, only a lifestyle-revolution etc etc.

Points possible valid, but unlikely to influence anybody, given the way that it was presented. Shame really.

agree on the format. hated him dressing up as old lady. liked his art vs craft explanation, something like art is something never repeated, whereas craft is repeated until it's perfect.

does the man never smile? he is a supreme poseur.

kikujiro - i get popbitch and didn't see anything about meades. am i missing something?

edited for typo
