Do you remember what street or neighborhood was this in?

I should have mentioned. This is Bangkok's Chinatown - Yaowarat. Which is where we stayed.

Did you go to Jay Fai while in Yaowarat?  Also, a very famous place in Yaowarat for Pad Thai - Thip Samai...

Hi Shai,
I live in Chiang Mai. This thread is better than most of the food boards in CM. I love Burmese food but the plating of these dishes is better than most of the Burmese/Shan restaurants I go to. The tamarind leaf salad looks better than most too. The only restaurant I know that does an eggplant curry is the "Burmese Library" just off of Nimmanhaemin. Do you remember where you got these dishes? Thanks!

Hi El, thanks for the kind words :)

I envy you for living in Chiang Mai - such a charming city.

This restaurant is Nong Bee's. Though admittedly, I won't give it a strong recommendation, the food was very basic, a little too much MSG. Suited as well for a late night light-meal.

We sampled some very good Burmese around the Friday morning market (กาดนัดจีนยูนาน).

I am positively drooling.  Thank you so much for posting this.  I wish I had access to fresh peppercorns.  I have frozen fingerroot which is pretty good, but the brined peppercorns are 1 step up from flavorless.

2 questions - what is the slingshot aimed aat and what is the shiny black in the leaf cup?

Those are tin cans, 1 baht per shoot. We did OK :P

In the leaf is some starch jelly, this one colored dark blue with pea flowers. Beans, corn and barley on top.

What did you think of the pandan/palm sugar drink?  To me, pandan always tastes like rice in my head. Not that that is a bad thing - but usually I've had it mixed with other flavors - like in a kueh or something.

Interesting because my limited descriptive powers have always associated pandan and the smell of fragrant Thai jasmine rice with a sort of vanilla aroma/taste. I had a thing for the pandan Swiss roll at some local markets for a while.

Pretty mild, I can see the likeness to rice. It was tasty, especially due to being sweet and cold in hot weather.

Look up "Pithecellobium dulce (Benth).

A native of Mexico. Has an interesting taste. The red fleshed variety is sweeter. In Shain's photo it's ripe ad ready to eat raw.

Nice trip, Shain. I went there twice, in 2000 and 2001, before having digital cameras and not knowing much about the amazing food there.

Overwhelming beauty. So nice to see a place so different, truly defines "exotic" across the board in landscape and food.
