Notes from Thailand Dec 2021

A great meal:

Mushrooms in oyster sauce.
Clams in chili sauce with basil and a bit of sugar.
Rich shrimp paste soup, with small tender shrimps, a touch of sugar, lots of lemongrass. Vegetable platter (eggplant, banana flower, zucchini of sorts, luttac, young ginger).
Fried noodles with egg, basil, sauce.

Tasty lemongrass drink.

I loved our trip to an elephant sanctuary in outside of Chiang Mai.  15 years ago it was really hard to find one that wasn't exploiting the elephants.

I'm glad you were able to, it's quite an experience.

I was happy to see that the elephants in the park we visited seemed happy and well taken of.

Unfortunately I've heard too many accident stories....

Yeah,  I know....but I hope no one got hurt...

I LOVE watching them.  In my younger years we used to shoot some of the more questionable ones off (safely and where we live in the country) but now I'm too scared.

Was a good time, though, back in the day.

Oh I am no saint - used to take the boys to Los Angeles Chinatown - to the back rooms with binders full of options. We were as safe as possible but probably stoopio, Never anything that could fly to someones roof and ignite. Past 4th - this mess https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2021/07/07/arturo-ceja-charged-in-connection-to-massive-south-la-fireworks-explosion-set-to-appear-in-federal-court-tuesday/

Gosh they are pretty though ;) and uplifting

We were there to observe. Funny story, lanterns were recently banned, as they can be a fire hazard and cause pollution. Not that it stopped people (luckily for us, because it was a beautiful experience). After a couple of lanterns got stuck up trees, a police officer turns up. Lantern-blowers around us got a bit worried, understandably, but he ended up just giving them a lesson in properly releasing the lanterns.

Bubble tea from the new years eve. Tasty enough to be worth mentioning :)

One taro flavored, the other matcha. Thai have their bobba softer than I remeber from Taiwan, and I think it's more to my liking.

We snacked on a steamed eggy sponge cake, warm sticky rice with custard (ugly but delicious), warm mochi with sesame.

Farmers market in Chiang Mai.

Lots of beautiful produce, organic vegetables, and also clothes, crafts.

Grilled sticky rice patties with millet(?), sugar.

Steamed rice rolls with chives and savory-sweet sauce, fried garlic.

Bingsu - mango milk ice; longan ice with grass jelly.

Visit to a coffee farm. The owner was very kind and showed us around, explained about their production, farm, roasting and business. He told us he started the farm after retiring. Because of the new years, the coffee shop was not open (even though he suggested to open it up just for us, but we didn't want to be even more of a bother). We got some coffee to take home, and then got some as a gift. Such a nice guy :)

Did you get a chance to smell the coffee blossoms?  When we were in Bali visiting a waterfall, our guide knew all the plants in the area and would show us arabica and robusto coffee plants in different stages - I was amazed when smelling the robusto flowers - it smelled like jasmine!
