I just looked at the weekly flyer for the one closest. 6 miles. Never heard of it. Nothing I would go to. A lot of packaged product. Quality of fresh stuff ???

I go there sometimes, it's a bit out of the way but they do have really good deals.  Plus there's the 'treasure hunt' aspect that some people enjoy.

They have everything, but the specifics may change.  Like they always have pints of premium ice cream for $2-3, sometimes there might be a few flavors of Haagen Dazs, sometimes it's Ben & Jerry's, sometimes Talenti gelato, and often the more niche or seasonal flavors - pistachio or rum raisin instead of vanilla.  My understanding is a lot of it is overstock or closer to the pull date than other stores will accept.

Fresh produce can be on the meh side but everything else I've bought has been good quality.  Things I buy there include nuts (sliced almonds are even cheaper than TJ), sparkling water, frozen pizza, tortilla chips, guacamole, cheese, beef jerky, granola, olive oil, dried fruit, hand soap, cotton balls ...

If there's one near you, might as well check it out!

@pastrygirl

thank you for that detailed review.

I looked at their weekly ad on line, and

it was much shorter than other stores

and nothing stood out to me.

Ive read over tie in the WSJ that there are large ( ? )

companies in the food industry that concentrate on

overstock and  almost-expired items.

none near me.

For a long time we had one local, Duffy's, sold the mis-goods from one of the larger grocery chains in the area. Lots of items, but you never knew what you'd find.

Then about 15 yeas ago made a friend up in NH, he talked about the "used food" stores in and outside his town. Hit up those places many times, lots of good deals. Slightly dented, stained labels, off-runs, overstocks. Day old from local bakeries, scones, breads, etc.

We're in a larger city of New England, the markets here will often put discount stickers on items in the meat case. Now known as "used meat". Just picked up a flat iron steak for very little money today.

You mean a grill with the pulley to raise and lower. That is what Central Coast Santa Maria looks like here. And must have pinquito beans. @rancho_gordo has them

Exactly. But no pinquito beans, alas. Will make do with another.

I should look into Rancho Gordo.

Lot of love here. On our central coast they are in the bulk bin at every grocer.
