I was gonna say it was the wine 🤷‍♀️

I think that is from Piedmont, Italy. I just love all that member's food. Inspires me. Here is link to @David Lebovitz on Sicilian capers  Scroll down for the pods that almost look like olives. https://www.davidlebovitz.com/capers-in-pantelleria-italy-sicily/

Looks like cooking is happening in the new apartment, @KennethT! (How do you make that roti prata? It looks great).

Let's call this the hot mess dinner, after a day with my in-laws, and driving home through what only could be called rain of biblical proportions. Or a derecho. No xanax were harmed. But 1.5 bottles of wine were consumed once home.

IMG_4234.thumb.jpeg.433cdc32df3151fc6595560e33e7f97f.jpeg

Little gem salads with house made ranch dressing.

IMG_4236.thumb.jpeg.fc86f8327a7b87625aab4448bcc6cecb.jpeg

Pan roasted Berkshire pork chop over reverse engineered rice-a-roni (which is never as good as real Rice-A-Roni, due to the lowering of the sodium content by like 2/3).

Truly a hot mess.

My friend J and I had a late birthday dinner (but an early dinner time-of-day-wise) for me today.  My birthday was actually two weeks ago, but celebrations were delayed due to a family bereavement.

Lunch  was partaken of in a mainly Cantonese restaurant on the 73rd floor of the city's tallest building. Great views normally, but it poured monsoon-like all through the meal.

Then we went shopping and I ended up accidentally buying a new cell phone! Now spending the evening, trying to work out all its functions.

Yes- I am getting back into the groove. I love working in the new kitchen and it's not even done yet!

I actually wrote down my prata recipe here...

I think I better come over to try yours and make sure I am doing it correctly once the attempt is made.

Phở bò viên - or meatball pho. Everything made from scratch during the breaks of the seemingly endless video conferences. A tasty reward for a long day, enjoyed outside and very well accompanied by a Hefeweizen ...

Today is a holiday in the US and nobody had to get up this morning so last night we did pizza and movie night.  Pepperoni was nephew's choice:

Niece chose mashed potato and bacon:

Its Monday

Pizza and a Movie.

no pizza tonight :

MarketBaslet has a Turkey Dinner

that is decent

I got two , as I was there .

Turkey Dinner is my favorite , for many reasons

Historical etc ;

DSC09449.thumb.jpg.35fd65ac86f98e46622da675c9d05a23.jpg

The turkey is real  turkey , the mashed potatoes , store made

from real potatoes..  the stuffing is a bit too salty

but the celery very finely minced.

the veg , MB Fz , but OK.

i do have an Uno's DeepDish

in the freezer ....

and the movie is :

https://www.hbo.com/mare-of-easttown

episode 7 , the finale.

no spoilers  here !

Now , the NYtimes is a fine newspaper

sa the the WSJournal

and The Guardian etc

but the film critic , mentioned before

from the NYTimes :

"""  This has to be so because “Mare of Easttown,” ...

is in the tradition of Middle American miserabilism ""

and

"" It’s there in a scene that brings together two of the show’s saddest characters, in violent fashion, for no discernible dramatic purpose beyond an injection of outré melodrama. ""

Im no film critic.  and make of MofE what you will.

and adding a french word , well , adds culture of course

but please , Mr NYTimes Film critic :

as my mother might have said :

" Perhaps your should get your head examined ?

dinner was fine

M of E  will be missed next week

but I have in on HardDrive

so there it is.

Your picture looks similar to my dinner last night.  Amazon managed a grocery delivery, but my dinner plans were sold out.  I had ordered duck and lamb.  They did not arrive.

What dinner was:  a chicken thigh, mashed potatoes, cream gravy, frozen peas.

I cooked the thigh in the APO.  I achieved stringy meat that was underdone.  A feat formerly thought impossible.  Skin was crispy though.

The potato chunks were underdone and almost didn't mash.  I ate them anyway.

The cream sauce was lumpy, I believe from being overheated.  Maybe straining would have helped.  Maybe it would have not.  Anyhow I didn't bother.

The frozen peas were acceptable.

Edit:  and I didn't watch a movie.

I was researching almonds for another topic when I came upon a topical Kate Winslet interview in the NY Times:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/31/style/mare-of-easttown-kate-winslet.html?action=click&algo=bandit-all-surfaces&block=lone_trending_recirc&fellback=false&imp_id=1071460&impression_id=20624db0-c28e-11eb-a494-7748be40cb79&index=0&pgtype=Article&pool=pool%2F91fcf81c-4fb0-49ff-bd57-a24647c85ea1&region=footer&req_id=882398965&surface=most-popular-story&variant=0_bandit-all-surfaces

Her hoagies were vegetarian and had no onion.  And she did not try scrapple!  I grew up in West Philadelphia, and west of Philadelphia.  I could probably still do the accent but they did not ask me.

I've seen Winslet in only one movie, Heavenly Creatures.  I am morbidly fascinated with Anne Perry and the murder.  Winslet nailed it in my opinion.

This is oyakodon, chicken and egg over rice. You can make one in ten minutes or you can do some extra steps to add umami to the chicken and enrich the umami in the sauce:

I make my own (strong) dashi with 30 grams kombu, 30 grams (freshly shaven) bonito, and one liter of water. I salt the chicken for twenty minutes, rinse it in the sink, sear it on both sides and then put that partly cooked chicken in the room temperature dashi to absorb the umami as chicken cools and draws the dashi into itself then put it in the fridge overnight. I use that 'sauce' in the dish and proceed as normal and it makes all the difference. My Japanese friends said it was the best oyakodon they'd ever had. :)

yes , M of E is flawed

Mare's mother , Helen ( Jean Smart )

should have had a scene

cooking up a pan full of scapple.

in a pan from Walmart , cheap , plastic handle

that would melt near the pan.

have a dark black semi-nonstick finish

and be avocado in color.

the scrapple would have to be cooked correctly :

med to dark brown , not burnt , and crispy

on the surface , but soft inside.

images.jpeg.af8a573179e3b43fc43669b0e7bce32a.jpeg

w a rolling rock as a chaser.

this is a food forum after all.

the M of E would have been perfect.

Delco ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqsVXoHpyYI

note the Ridley Spike.

P.S.:  the cinematography in M of E is stunning.
