2020 Farmers Markets

Our markets aren't opening until June, which really isn't a problem as we have a later growing season in Eastern, WA.  The latest update is that we will see like above, some fresh produce being given out for free.  We've already seen farmers give out thousands of pounds of russet potatoes that were in storage from last fall that they didn't want to till under. I'm looking forward to it.

I asked my favorite farmer how they were doing, Their land is about 45 miles south of me. Labor getting dicey and the oddness of our weather made them toss out their usual succession planting schemes. Adjusting...

Bountiful haul today.

Massive bunch of glads, sunflowers, zinnia. ( I am NOT a flower arranger.)

Peaches, green beans, new potatoes, okra, tomatoes. Could have had cucumbers, assorted squash, lettuces, but i had all that here.

Veggie dinner tonight. Squash casserole, zucchini fritters, green beans with new potatoes, fried green tomatoes. Peaches over ice cream. Y'all come on.

Have not been able to get to farmers market but was gifted some incredible Oxnard strawberries and home grown cherry tomatoes. The scent; the taste - I think I dreamt about them last night.

So sketchy! My husband braved our usual farmers' market last week. No tomatoes at all. Very very good bicolor corn. Excellent Santa Rosa plums. Lousy underripe apricots. Delicious strawberries. Of course you couldn't pick the produce yourself, just had to rely on a pre-packed bag, and you couldn't peel back the corn husks to get a peek, either. But early corn is usually very sweet and worm-free from our favorite vendor. One of the largest vendors was absent, and that's where we get tomatoes and herbs. Surprising about the lack tomatoes, since some of our regular markets have been stocking decent heirlooms for the last few weeks. Ah well, it is what it is. These days it is best not to count on anything.

Photos from the little roadside stand I stop at when driving to my Dr’s office, he has a lot of peppers. Big tomatoes today, none of the little guys. This was around 4pm, so maybe I was scooped. I took a closer photo of a container of little green striped guys, are these Thai eggplants?

Not sure this is where this belongs.  Jessica volunteers as an admin on a FB page that her best friend started.  As a thank you, he gave her a box from Hungry Harvest - a company that delivers imperfect fruits and vegetables.  It was too much for her, so she is sharing with us:

She was allowed to pick what she wanted online before delivery.  Her haul included some comically large carrots and radishes:

This is actually one of our local farms, rather than a farmers market, but not sure where else to post. I love this farm, it's so much fun and they have lovely chickens who produce delicious eggs and lots of great produce as well as a lavender farm. They do a lavender festival in the summer and a harvest or Halloween festival in the fall. The rest of the growing season, they have an honour system farmstand with all their produce and lavender products, etc but for this, they decorate and open up the barn. This year it's open to a limited number of people at a time.

For some reason the chickens were shy when we were there this time; that's not their usual style!

That's one of the neatest markets I've ever seen!  I love the decor and the vibe.

I love it there, also! It's our go-to farm for eggs and we shop their farmstand for various produce throughout the season. They grow beautiful flowers, also. And they have goats, I didn't get a photo of them unfortunately. They make goat's milk soap at the farm.

I was going to try and do a little blog on local farms this past summer but with the Covid issues and all, it didn't happen. I'll still try to share some of the details on some of the other farms at some point. We have some fun ones.

I hope you will do that blog next year, when all this mess will be over!

Jessica received a surprise box of vegetables from Hungary Harvest (the “imperfect fruit and veg delivery company that we got the last batch from) – she had thought that the other box was the whole order.  I didn’t take a picture, but she got broccoli, zucchini, cantaloupes, yellow tomatoes, avocados, and celery.  I used the broccoli to make MORE broccoli salad to have on hand:

Cooked some collards from the LAST box:

And cut up the cantaloupes:

Broccoli salad is on my to-do for the day, as well. A local indie grocer had it on 4/$5 this week, with a limit of 8, so I got 8. That'll be a week's cooked broccoli, a big bowl of broccoli salad, and some broccoli soup base for canning (I didn't give my pressure canner any exercise last year, and I don't want it feeling neglected). They also had 4-packs of sweet peppers on 3/$5, so I have some roasted peppers to can as well.

It can be either.  I taste it first and if it seems ok (not tough or super strong tasting), I just use it raw.  It sits in the dressing long enough that if it is really fresh broccoli, I really can't tell the difference.  If it has a little age on it, I'll blanch and ice-water the hell out of it 😁

It's now closed for the season, but this is where our farmers' market is held. It was just so pretty I had to stop and take a pic today.

It's on the way to my house; I drive by it every time I go from my subdivision to the main highway.
