Chocdoc Gambles on Vegas

@Alleguede and I are in the lounge at Pearson awaiting our flight to Vegas for the IBIE (International Baking Industry Exhibition).

 

I got the usually bomb sniffing swab done on my electronics - @Alleguede got the 3rd degree at customs. Anyone know what a carnet is? I believe I got that lecture the last time.

Made myself a little cocktail, Maker's Mark, Grand Marnier, vintage port. I've had better!

Not a lot of choices to eat since it's rather late (not that earlier would have helped) - they also have pasta salad, Italian Wedding soup, Cream of mushroom soup, corn chips and salsa. There appear to be some cookies there as well. I'm trying to low carb as much as possible so I'm avoiding most of it.

LAS is perhaps my least favorite US airport. Long schleps, mediocre food, slow baggage, hideous cab line.

Our luggage was the first off the plane. So no long wait there. 

 

Taxi driver a bit of a madman and he had those scented things in all the vents so I nearly choked to death.

You would have to wonder about the incredible waste.  Coupling that to AnnaN's experience in the hospital recently.  Think of the number of folks who could eat on the food just tossed out.

Hot nuts - that is cool ;)   There are worse airports. I think one goes into the "adventure" with low expectations and can be happily surprised.  Looking forward to interesting food. Las Vegas is my least favorite city though the outskirts (mountain views etc) are lovely on a bike.

We once drove through Las Vegas on the way to see my parents in San Diego.   1985 or so.  It was 5:30 am...it was so hot that we simply drove all night.  We stopped for gas and I was stunned to see slot machines in a gas bar being played at that hour.  I'm sorry now that we didn't at least drive down the main streets and look at the hotels and casinos.  Not my kind of place either.

I haven't been there in ages...DH had no interest, having been there for conventions more times than he liked and he wasn't a gambler either.

I last went sometime in the mid to late eighties with a group of friends,  I caught a cold on the flight down there and was miserable for the first couple of days.  Oddly, the highlight of the trip was a visit to what they referred to as a 'titty-bar'.

We never stopped laughing at the antics there.

I'm ok with Vegas...been there, wouldn't choose to go back but it wouldn't bother me if I had to. Lots of good places to eat, though.

Kinda the same for me. I've never had the stuff made by them but I tried 2 or 3 recipes from the book that I found online while deciding if I was gonna order the book and never ordered the book. Nothing I tried was bad, it just wasn't particularly exciting either.

      I have just returned home after four days (three nights) in Guilin. This was a business trip, so no exotic tales this time. Just food. Anyway, despite its reputation, Guilin is actually a rather dull city for the most part - anything interesting lies outside the city in the surrounding countryside.
       
      I was staying in the far east of the city away from the rip-off tourist hotels and restaurants and spent my time with local people eating in normal restaurants.
       
      I arrived in Wednesday just in time for lunch.

      * I asked what the cakes were but they got rather coy when it came to details. It seems these are unique to this restaurant.
