Pizza for the kids: no cheese for the boy, cheese for the girl. Picanha for us, with salad and some krauts (comparing Trader Joe’s and Cleveland Krauts). How much we miss the kimchi from our Korean veg shop in Brooklyn 😩

After a half-day dentist appointment at Chiang Mai, Thailand - some nibbbling and browsing, that I’d like to sell you as dinner:

To start the night (and take the edge off the local anaesthetics and anxiolytics) I got something from the Duty Free at Hong Kong airport. Very, very smooth ...

Stumbled across a local market on my way to the “touristy” center ... who can resist grilled meat ?

Pork neck, grilled with soy and bbq honey. Chopped and served in a plastic bag. What’s not to love ?

Grilled sausages, one cured, the other one heavily spiced with curry and lemongrass ...

Fried chicken with garlic, soy, a bit spicy ...

At home - in conjunction with a highball based on above Speyside blend - a local Lays’s variety. Pleasant.

Was one of the sausages a sai oua?  I love those - I had some amazing specimens in Chiang Mai around 13 years ago...  and khao soi!

Didn't know what I wanted for dinner. And pizza is always received well by both Moe and Matt, so I hand-mixed a 500g dough at 80% hydration this morning and put it in the fridge before I left for work.

Matt took it out of the fridge two hours before I got home.
Instead of baking right on the stone on the grill, I baked the pizzas in the Bakerstone Pizza oven. I haven't used this in about three years.

Was really happy with how the pizzas turned out.

Baked a three cheese pizza for Matt and a Pepperoni deluxe for Moe and I.

Do not judge.

A bit of belly, potato and coleslaw.  Ignore any little specks.

Beautiful! Just wonderful!

I have to point out that it is too bad that most of the world do not use chopsticks. The only way we can enjoy lots of different kinds of fish is to use chopstick. We are endangering  ocean life by wasting so much seafood. We eat very limited varieties of fish, and only filleted fish. It's wasteful filleting fish.

Thank you Liuzhou for having shown the world how many different kind of fish are delicious in you posts.

I was hungry for fattoush salad, but I also wanted kind of a chef's salad.  So I compromised with myself.

Sous vide chicken breast cut up and marinated in some sumac, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses, garlic, red wine vinegar and olive oil

Dinner from before my vacation.

Navratan curry of cauliflower, eggplant, peas, and graham massal flavored egg cubes. The sauce itself made with coconut, ginger and various spices. Served with vermicelli flavored with turmeric and yogurt.

Today it was a Costco day, so we got some prime center cut ribeyes but I already defrosted some jumbo key west pink shrimps, so we had both.  We have a store here, called Wild Fork Foods, just frozen. Paradise for proteins, we get shrimps there.

Nibbling through Chiang Mai continues ... this time on Wua Lai Street night market:

Sausages are always a good start ... this time one with rice (middle left) and one “sour” sausage, made from fermented pork (middle right). The latter was excellent ...

1463DBE9-E577-4A3A-A981-2105062F0F2D.jpeg

Together with a shrimp-based rice roll ...

FE339B39-929C-493F-A4DF-C7BD010070E5.jpeg

Had to try the fried cheese balls. Came with sweet mayo and parsley flakes. Probably better after some more beers ...

The crispy seafood pancake shop. I took the oyster version - it did not disappoint !

At nightfall the market was swamped ...

I had my dose of sausage for the day, but this one looked soooo tempting !

From my last visit almost two years ago I still have dreams of this place ...

The shop only makes a herbal soup with blood and Khao Soi, the curried egg noodle soup of northern Thailand. It is divine here. A thick coconut-based curry broth, boiled egg noodles, fried noodles on top. All the fixings come separate - pickles, shallots, chili, lime ...

4ABD3B21-0212-4AE4-87F9-DF3DC9C5369B.jpeg

Simply divine. For 90 cents !

Getting crowded ...

A serene smile on my way back ...

And to conclude the night a Speyside highball (or two or so ...)

@Duvel Love these pics... you can never have too much Khao Soi when in Chiang Mai...  when we were there, our hotel was about a 20-30 minute ride away from Chiang Mai proper, and they had a shuttle that left every hour.  We wound up missing said shuttle from the night market to get back to the hotel because we got distracted getting some great mango with sticky rice from a vendor, and then basically had to run back to the meeting place, only to get there like 5 minutes late... But that mango with sticky rice was totally worth it!

Must have been success because 8 year old granddaughter decided to spend the night, committing to get up at 5am to go to the flea market with us.    We'll see how this goes.....

Diner classic last night, tuna melt. Made with swiss cheese (which I actually prefer vs cheddar), thin tomato slices under the cheese (which allowed the tomato to warm up when the cheese was broiled), and bread properly grilled so it didn’t get soggy. It’s one of those things I’ll order maybe once a year, so I can appreciate when the elements come together like they should.

You know, I really should sit down at my computer and peruse the dinner thread when I’m making my shopping list for the week.  I get home with my groceries, come here and am dissatisfied with everything I’ve bought and don’t want the meals I’ve planned.  I’m looking now and find that I want @Ann_T's Shepherd’s Pie, @HungryChris' skewered shrimp and salad, @scubadoo97's smoked trout and grilled shrimp, @Shelby's roast, @Margaret Pilgrim's Swedish meatballs, @liamsaunt's gorgeous black cod…etc.  Sigh.  Well, back in reality land - We were at Wegman’s yesterday and got an Edward’s petite country ham and these interesting looking potatoes:

The potatoes were surprisingly good.  They also had a version with sweet potatoes.  I’ll be buying these again.  Served with a lovely freezer gift:

Sweet potato biscuits from Yoder’s (an Amish/Mennonite market near Charlottesville VA) and cinnamon biscuits from Callie’s Biscuits in Charleston SC.

It was all very good.  But looking at what y’all have made lately, I have ambitions. 😁
