Secrets of the Butcher

The eating of songbirds...ignoring legalities and perhaps ethical issues ( or perhaps meat is meat and songbirds have no more moral standing than deer)...seems unpleasant and pointless. There’s as much meat as a small shrimp and all those indigestible feathers/beak/legs to contend with. Does one york up a bezoar of bird after eating a few?

makes unpeeled shrimp almost appetizing.

Four and twenty blackbirds baked into a pie and all of that.

On blackbirds, he says:  "There's a French proverb that goes 'For lack of thrushes, one eats blackbirds.'  Forget this proverb; blackbird doesn't tastes great".

I'm still stuck on the thrush-melt, tho.  Stuck hard.

According to some sources, Francois Mitterrand, former French President ate an Ortolan on New Year's Eve, 1995.  The story goes that the little bird was forced feed and drowned in Armagnac.  Let's hope he enjoyed the wee birdie,  It turned out to be his last meal.  No word if it was "melt in your mouth" good..  By the way, he died of prostrate cancer not the results of eating the bird.
