But it isn't meant to be flavourful. Chinese cuisine uses rice (including congee) to be a neutral base on which the accompanying dishes or condiments can sit. That's why they don't ever season rice.  Chinese friends were amazed when they saw me put salt into rice. They thought I was mad.

Liuzhou! I've gone through this whole thread and your photos of local KFC and pizza hut offerings are illuminating, a bit startling, and just wonderful. Thank you so much! McDonald's serves congee? Fantastic!

The two large characters, 粥王 zhōu wáng mean "Congee King". They offer three varieties. The large picture is Century egg and chicken congee with a potato fritter. At the bottom they  show:

Left - Pickled vegetable, crisp bamboo shoot and chicken,
Centre - The large picture repeated

Right - Salted egg yolk and chicken.

 

All three come with a potato fritter.

In the largest photo, I can totally see the yolk and "white" parts of the century egg, but what pray tell is the large plum colored item on the upper right that looks like an acrylic nail?

I'm not sure. I'll check it next time I'm there and see if it's any clearer on the large poster. I think it is still up.

McDonalds in HK runs it’s line of “prosperity” burgers again, as a Chinese New Year-themed short term addition to their menu. 

 

I had to bite the bullet, or better the prosperity chicken hash brown burger. It’s as bad as it sounds. Really. A sweet black pepper sauce coating a fried chicken “leg”, deboned of course. The beef version had the same sauce, yet no other ingredients. Party & sauce. No veggies, pickles, nothing ... Not to be repeated until CNY 2020 !

 

(I also had to augment the coke with a generous splash of Maker’s Mark. Worked ...)

Interesting - the only kind of chicken you will see in fast food other than in whole fried pieces a la KFC or Popeyes is white meat - you'd never see deboned leg meat on a sandwich.

McDonald's restaurants here in my neck of the woods are doing fish & chips right now.

 

To judge from the billboards (I'm morbidly curious, but not enough so to darken the door of a McD's) it looks like the battered fish portions you'd get from the supermarket's frozen food section. Or wouldn't, as the case may be. :P

Current offering at McDonalds HK is a large Chicken McNuggets box with four seasonal sauces ...

 

The fermented bean curd one was great - very savoury, the egg yolk was tastewise good, but so rich I couldn’t eat it (which says a lot for someone who could drink mayo from shot glasses ...). The other two were unremarkable.

Summertime in Japan is Curry time (because allegedly spicy food makes you sweat, which I turn helps with the heat ...). Whether I subscribe to this wisdom or not, I felt compelled to try the seasonal McDonalds Chicken Curry burger.

It was good. Battered & fried chicken leg, slathered with a mild and aromatic Japanese style curry sauce. Nice !

Just for comparison I had to try the MOS Burger variety of the Curry cheese burger ... basically a cheese burger with the MOS Burger chili,  heavily scented with S&B curry powder. Spicy, leads aromatic that the McD equivalent, but thanks to two (freshly grilled) beef patties and ample amounts of kewpie mayo far more satisfying ...

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, shortly before midnight. After airport express to the hotel it was past 0.30h, and in the area around the hotel no local shops were opened anymore, except for the McDonalds in the train station. My colleagues went to their rooms to enjoy overpriced sandwiches, I headed out to find something to contribute to this thread ...

Cempedak is a local fruit, bitnof a mixture of durian and mango.

 

They wanted to close at 1.00h, so only takeout was available ...

The rice was palatable, fried chicken freshly made and spicy. Condiments were ok.

Corn pie was too sweet. The Cempedak McFlurry was tasty, really tasted more like Mango, with a kind of Durian-esk afterglow. Still it was too much and I could only finish half ...
