My dentist used to use Jujubes candy to remove temporary crowns. She heated them a little, then you bit down rather hard,  waited half a minute, then sprang your jaw open forcefully. It almost always worked. I don't know when she abandoned the method, but it was at least ten years ago. Having witnessed Jujubes power I never ate them after that first extraction. But she did make the experience of getting crowns more fun!

Jessica and I went by a local Latino bakery/Paleteria just before the 4th to get some treats for when our weekend company was here and we got this pastry to share:

It was custard filled and had a great crust.  They could have been a little more generous with the custard, but it was lovely, smooth custard with an almost caramelized flavor.  It was our first time at this place and we will definitely be back.

红泥花生 (hóng ní huā shēng - Red Mud Peanuts).

 

These have been “cured” by being buried in a muddy red paste of unidentifiable ingredients then baked until the shells turn red and the ‘nuts’ take on a pleasant earthy taste. These are good (in my humble).

I'm told that yesterday was National Ice Cream Day in the US.  I was feeling left out last night but then spied a container in my freezer:

Saffron, pistachio and rose.  The sahlab gives it a bit of a chewy texture.  Need to go get more.

Currently snacking on Kettle Corn by Popcorn Indiana.

Oddly, I have had this before and with the previous bag it tasted like freshly popped Kettle Popcorn.

This bag...no "just popped" taste.

Will have to do further investigation. Twist my arm...:B

Kettle corn in general I find irresistable. I have convinced myself that I am only allowed to buy it at farmers market from the guy with the big copper kettle and the paddle and only the small bag. Happy sampling!

Leftover papadum from last night's Indian takeout. Still wonderfully crispy. With tamarind sauce.

 

Anyone ever make papadum? I've perused a few recipes -- anyone have an old reliable?

 

As I am still hungry, I think I will go for some canteloupe next, as it's conveniently already diced in the fridge.

Today is 七夕节 (qī xī jié), the Double Seventh Festival held on the 7th day of the 7th month by the traditional Chinese solar-lunar calendar. This is often referred to as Chinese Valentine's Day (although they have taken up observing the February 14th western one, too!)

 

It is one of the few Chinese festivals with which no particular foods are attached, but I am 'celebrating' by snacking on spicy braised duck hearts!

Here is the 2,000-year-old legend on which the festival is based.

Niulang was an orphan who lived with his brother and sister-in-law. He was often abused by his sister-in-law. They eventually kicked him out of the house, and gave him nothing but an old cow. One day, the old cow suddenly spoke out, telling Niulang that a fairy will come, and that she is the heavenly weaver. It said the fairy will stay here if she fails to go back to heaven before morning. In accordance with what the old cow said, Niulang saw the beautiful fairy and fell in love with her, then they got married. The emperor of heaven ('The Jade Emperor') found out about this and was furious, so he sent minions to escort the heavenly weaver back to heaven. Niulang was heartbroken and decided to chase after them. However, the Queen Mother of the West drew a Silver River (The Milky Way) in the sky and blocked his way. Meanwhile, the love between Niulang and the weaver moved the magpie, and they built a bridge of magpies over the Silver River for them to meet. The Emperor of Heaven was also moved by the sight, and allowed this couple to meet on the Magpie Bridg once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
