Try Rain. I really liked it. It is, I think, being overhauled to control the rain droplets running down the walls. (Sounds a bit tacky, I know, but it is rather nice.)

I have not been to Todd English's place or Michael Jordan's (the look of MJ is quite nice) but most people I know think Mohegan Sun is more food-forward and dining-aware than Foxwoods. Of course, some of these people think it's best to put a $100 bill into the slot machine to get the machine's "attention" but then they win and I don't. Go figure.

 went to the summer shack 2 times and it was great both times. (jasper white) its casual seafood done real well,,modestly priced and very good staff.

as far as rain goes hope you hit it big first!,,70-80 balloons for lobster,,,48 for halibut with zucchini!. the chef is from the french laundry if that makes you feel better. seems a little too much for me but if i hit it big i'll let you know how it is!

if your into gambling it is much better than foxwoods!

iriee -- When you have a chance, could you provide more information on the Summer Shack? (Note I have never sampled Jasper White's cuisine) Is the Summer Shack on the premises of Mohegan Sun itself? When I visited MS a number of years ago, there were no accommodations on site. I assume that has changed.

(For other members, there is relatively inexpense bus service from the Chinatowns in each of NYC and Boston for MS.)

I get to the sun every 3-4 months or so, and have eaten at the Summer Shack a good 4 times - and sometimes the food is better than other times. but the concept, as at Jasper's other shack in cambridge is great. Good seafood, simply prepared. Fried clams, steamed lobsters, simply grilled fish, clam rolls, etc. White leases the space from the casino, and uses his own purveyors, whereas I believe English's restaurant is his in name only...so basically all that raw food comes from the same supply as the rest of the casino owned restaurants. Anyway, when the Summer Shack first opened, I remember Jasper being there, and the food was real good. A year and a half later, who knows how often he shows up...the food may suffer accordingly. AS always in those kind of places, be wary of the specials, especially on a Sunday or Monday!

The barbecue place (Bubba's, I think) may also be an independent - its kind of like a Virgil's type of restaurant...lots of theme going on...they do have all-u-can-eat ribs on Monday and Tuesday nights - double check that...Fair to middling barbecue...good bar.

The big plus, in my book, is in the food area in the "old" casino, or the "Casino of the Earth," the first thing they built up there. There's a real good Asian noodle place, but watch out - at lunch time on the weekends it can be jammed. They run lots of buses from Chinatowns in New York and Boston.

Stayed at the hotel over Christmas, and it was an excellent room - very Vegas like in the size of the accomodation...and, it's basically brand new.

Haven't eaten at Jordan's yet, because I really worry about dropping that sort of coin when I have a feeling the staff and food isn't going to be all that great...

What the Mohegan Sun really comes down to though, is this: 22 craps tables!

Jasper White's Summer Shack at Mohegan Sun is holding the "Connecticut Oyster Open" this Monday at 7PM. It will be an oyster shucking contest and the competition will be from the staff of several area restaurants (Max's Oyster Bar,Go Fish, Bill's Seafood, Flanders's Fish Market and chefs from Mohegan Sun).

The bottom line is for $35 you can enjoy all the clams and oysters you can put away! I'm all over that!

iriee,

According to the info in the Norwich Bulletin yesterday:

"Competitors will go at it in five rounds for four different titles, including Best Oyster Shucker, Best Clam Shucker, Best Overall Team and Best Novelty Shuck." " The good news for you is that for $35 per person you get all the clams and oysters you can eat. Unfortunately, the price doesn't include beverages, but there will be a beer-opening competion, sponsored by Samual Adams Boston Lager." for more info or reservations call 860 862 9500

Speaking for myself, I have always been stopped by the price when it came to how many oysters was enough. I don't know what to expect, but I'll be there.

HungryChris -- If you are aware (and if you are not, that's wonderful as well), does one have to take some other form of transportation after the ferry?

I 've recently taken the Metro North from Grand Central - you go to New Haven via the railroad, and from there, a bus goes directly to the Mohegan Sun. It's $34 or so round trip, and they reimburse you with about $20 or $25 in comps.

I regret to submit that as of today all the tickets ( there were 200 of them) are sold and our only recourse is to show up early and hope that all the passes issued to the press are not used. I am on the fence and have not decided if I will be there or not.

I recently took a friend to T. English for dinner. I thought the food and service were excellent. We could see the kitchen from our table which was fun and entertaining (for me at least!). The flat bread pizza was wonderful, thin and crispy with just enough toppings. My favorite appetizer was the wild mushroom brushetta. The mushrooms were prepared in a marsala cream sauce which was so delicious that we mopped up any extra with the bread from the bread basket. For entrees we ordered the butternut squash tortelli and the gnocci. The tortelli was way too sweet, in my opinion. I wouldn't order it again although the waitress assured us that it was one of the most popular dishes on the menu. The gnocci was perfect, one of my favorite dishes anyway and just nicely done. I plan to visit this restaurant again soon and try some of the salads and more of the pizzas.

I like almost all the food establishments at the Mohegun Sun. Having dined twice at the MJ,s I will reccomend it highly and so is Tod English Restaurant and bar. I forget the burger joints name, usually they have a line. All these joints are great specially when you are winniing and spending their money or comps.

The Service, is great at MJ,s or atleast far superior than english,s restaurant.

Also what I have noticed, people try to spend less time on food and give more time on gaming.

If I go back I will have a fine dinner or if I am in rush MJ,s has a casual sports bar and great food.

Fun

Went to Summer Shack at Mohegan Sun on Saturday with my wife and parents and had the Pan Roasted Lobster. I can honestly say this dish was one of the best two or three lobster dishes that I have ever had.

I was born in Maine and grew up eating large quantities of lobster and cook it fairly often a variety of ways. I have also tried lobster dishes in a variety of cities and countries. I have used some of Jasper White's cookbooks (primarily Cooking from New England) and knew the Pan Roasted Lobster was a signature dish, but hadn't yet tried the recipe. It definitely lived up to expectations and then some. The sauce (which is primarily butter, chervil, and chives) was a perfect compliment. All of the meat was cooked to perfection. I am sure Todd English's Tuscany is also excellent, but I would highly recommend a trip to the Summer Shack at Mohegan Sun if you are in the vicinity (the other favored dish was the clam and corn fritter appetizer).
