I tried out a few recipes from my new (to me) The Complete book of Indian Cooking by Suneeta Varaswani. I like the book, she groups each dish by geographical region, these are all from the south.

Pork Uluruthu, fiery potatoes with tamarind, tomato Pappu (toor dal), pineapple relish, mint raita, lime pickle, rice and store bought roti paratha.

After a mediocre seafood dinner at a new place in town that was packed and got good reviews I had to throw together a simple seafood dish at home to remind me all is well in my world.

Cobia and scallops with string beans beans and corn.  Flamed off the string beans with apple brandy and the corn got a shot of tequila since it's a day post cinco de mayo

Normally we spend Derby Day by going to one of the casinos to pre-bet and then going home to watch the race on tv, but we had planned a day in NYC before we realized it was Derby Day.Deb had never seen Cats and wanted to, so that was one of the things we did. After Cats, we walked across town to Cellini Restaurant, where we had 5:30 rezzies. The first order of business was picking the wine, which Deb took care of. Umberto Cesari  Sangiovese, which was excellent!

Deb chose Veal Marsala and I opted for rapini stuffed ravioli. Both were, like the wine, excellent.

We finished up by splitting  a tiramisu with two glasses of Limoncello.

Permit me to post a few more items of interest. A T-Rex made out of Coach handbags and a small tribute to Derby Day

When you already have a recipe for roasted cauliflower  so good that you must suppress moans when you are eating it in company,  it is hard to bring yourself to try a different one.  But I am determined to keep dipping in to Diana Henry's Simple.  @blue_dolphin has already tackled Broccoli with Harissa and Cilantro Gremolata. But I've had enough broccoli this week and Henry does offer the option of using roasted cauliflower instead.   My cilantro, which I am trying my best to like, had gone so far south that only a (pungent and slimy) whisper of it was left. Undaunted I made the gremolata using curly parsley.  I tasted the harissa butter.  I tasted the gremolata.  I held out little hope for the final dish.  I gotta learn to trust Henry!  While it will never kick my favourite recipe off the menu it certainly earned a place beside it.

We've been craving tacos. So dinner tonight was carne asada tacos with lime and chili-marinaded sirloin, cilantro, onion, tomatillo salsa and cojita cheese. The tortillas I just bought off the shelf.

grilled sandwiches. There were three kinds: chicken, nueskes bacon, avocado and brie; prosciutto, fig jam, and gouda; and caprese.  Not a typical Sunday meal but my kitchen area is under construction.

I made a recipe an Australian friend gave me called Beef Stifado.  It supposed to be of Greek origin.  My friend told me the 'Pimento' in the recipe is actually whole allspice berries.  I used two red bell peppers before I found out  differently.  I thought they were referring to pimento peppers.   It came out well anyway. I had Asian brown rice with it and half an apple sourdough bread roll.

fish.thumb.jpg.685eebeb216a7900d90f008e732bd714.jpg

Tonight's dinner in a roadside shack somewhere in southern China.

Charcoal grilled fish (some kind of carp, perhaps - the vendor wasn't too sure) with Chinese garlic chives, pickled green beans, daikon radish, beansprouts, ginger, garlic, chilli, crunchy roasted soy beans and a soy based sauce. Shared with one other. Very satisfying. We passed on rice.

The fish was cooked to perfection with crisp skin and flaky white flesh.

Good thing you didn't have to share with me....I'd have hoarded all of the roasted soy beans.

A couple of recent dinners:

Shrimp with beets, arugula and sherry vinaigrette dressing:

Cincinnati Chili (my own) over spaghetti and a dog:

For those of you that remember, a few weeks ago I posted about having Cincinnati chili while I was there, and the supposed "way-better-than-Skyline" chili left a lot to be desired.  The next day I braved Skyline for lunch and had the chili over spaghetti and also over a Coney (a hot dog).  While still nowhere as good as mine, it was better than what I had the night before.
